QF to launch SYD DFW from 16 May and axe SFO

Fairly ambivalent on this. I actually don't transits through LAX (and JFK-DFW-LAX-JFK-NRT-SYD is a much more interesting journey home from JFK than JFK-DFW-SYD).

On the plus side given that there is only three class sold does that mean a good chance to get an F seat with J service?

Personally I would not relish a Skybed I all the way to DFW (I wont do it to LAX either and try to avoid it SYD-LHR).

The idea of flying to SFO is more appealing to me than DFW even though DFW is ok as an airport - SFO seems more romantic an idea.

I wonder if there will be a partly QF funded F lounge being opened in DFW?

Qantas launching flights to DFW, pulling out of SFO

Not good news IMHO!

Just talked to the QF call centre folks - award availability (at least) hasn't gone into the system yet. Amusingly enough it seems they only found out about it by one of the staff randomly noticing the new flight showing up!

DFW is ok, but very sad to lose SFO as an option. Minor point, even though the B.A lounge in SFO isn't much - DFW doesn't really have any lounge of an international standard. Also very limited cheap AA KUPP flights using DFW as an origin (compared to SFO).

This quote from the SMH confuses me:

Qantas said it would seek Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) approval for the two airlines to coordinate operations between Australia/New Zealand and the US.

"It will give Qantas a stronger and more balanced network footprint in the United States and provide more choice and convenience for travellers," Qantas said.

The new alliance would provide a "joint platform for the airlines to offer a daily service between Australia and Dallas/Fort Worth", Qantas said.

Does this mean that QF will eventually look to offer a daily service to DFW (instead of 4 times a week), codesharing with AA. Or does it mean that AA would be looking to fly 3 days a week to Sydney, and QF 4 times, from DFW???? An AA service would be fantastic (evips!!!), but I am guessing their planes can't make it quite that distance.....

So how long is this flight? Around 16-17 hours? No thanks.

Much better off sticking to the LAX routes and worry about the possible 1 hour waits to get through immigration (no big deal unless you were flying SYD-LAX for a 1 hour meeting and had to return right away) rather than losing one's sanity sitting in an aircraft cabin for that long.

Hope Qantas will introduce F Lounge in DFW.
Do you think that is likely to happen with one flight to/from DFW 4 times a week? How many people are likely to use this lounge every week?

I would certainly hope that resources are used on more important 'enhancements'.

Its not that much longer - only a couple of hours more than LAX.

I should also mention that the flight operates Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

It also gives an opportunity to take a 747 domestically from BNE-SYD!

Hmm, a couple of extra hours in a plane or spending time with customs and immigration in LAX, unless your destination is LAX or the east coast I dont see an issue, in fact I see an improvement.

No F class though by the looks of things, not that we have a real F lounge in Brisbane, maybe one day when we grow up or dry out or both.

The best thing about the BA lounge in SFO is being able to board the flight directly from the lounge.

I know premium flyers may like a First Class lounge in DFW, but if you are Qantas flying a 747 there with three classes, Economy, Premium Economy, and Business; why would you invest in a First Class lounge:?:

intro Y fares

For those of us who sit in the back, QF have some great return fares for the new route. Sample: 16May (out) and 13Jun (return) prices at $998 AI either from SYD or MEL. These fares not yet showing on their 'International Specials' page but come up when entering booking dates. 18,897 FFP from MEL. Unfortunately, all my trips are to SFO to visit family.

Whilst I have been wanting to visit Texas :) I have a flight booked thru SFO to cleveland after the end date so feeling a bit miffed. I dont think they handled the 107/108 change over to NYC well last year at all. I was In PE so got bumped. Dread to think what will have as I have a UA connection in SFo but booked on the same ticket

I must say I'm a little disappointed but understand some of the reasoning behind the decision.

I always liked SFO as a final destination more than LAX, rather than just a hub into the US as a whole and definitely see the downside of needing to travel to DFW only to have to fly back to SFO again if that's an intended place to stay. (Well, if wanting to make use of WP benefits at least).
