QF silver to get business class check in

I wonder how many Silver members there were back then both as a percentage of total FFs and what that number is today.

OWR has always had the benefit of business class checkin, since like... forever! Only Qantas decided to remove the benefit and allow checkin at premium economy or Qantas club.

At a guess not as many as today.

I found some old boarding passes from 1993 when I flew to HNL as a PS & the boarding pass had a comment on it "CIP freq flyer silver."

I initially joined in Sep 1986 buying the lounge membership to what was then known as the TAA Flight Deck Club.

Back then silvers enjoyed priority baggage so a far cry from the 'pleb status' acronym used these days. Back then as a silver ff you were going places.

You must have a low ff number then ozbb... I joined the club in 86 and then let it lapse so I am now showing as joining in Apr 91 with a ff number 17xx_ and yes even got quite a few opups as a silver back then:)

Bear in mind that prior to Sep 2001, Silver status was equivalent to the current Gold. The lowest "earned" status, equivalent to current Silver, was Blue.

Has anyone seen any announcements about this other than on AusBT?
For a change such as this shouldnt there be an email or something from QF a certain number of days in advance (eg 30?). As much as i trust AusBT i prefer to get something official. I just got an email about checkin time changes.

Or do you think QF will just announce it on the 1st?

For an increase in benefits there doesn't need to be any notification period. Notice is only required where a benefit is being limited: (my bolding).

3.2 Qantas Loyalty will use best efforts to advise Members of material changes to these Terms and Conditions and, where such changes will limit Benefits:
(a) where the Benefit is provided by Qantas, to give Members at least 3 months notice;
(b) where the Benefit is provided by a third party, where possible give Members at least 30 days notice.

Can a SG technically argue that such change will limit his/her benefit in longer queues at the J check-in counter, and insist on a 3-month period?

I doubt much would come out of that argument.

Bear in mind that prior to Sep 2001, Silver status was equivalent to the current Gold. The lowest "earned" status, equivalent to current Silver, was Blue.

In 1993, Silver did not get complimentary lounge access ... only gold (top level at the time) did.

There was km based and segment based status earn.

In segment terms it was 20 for blue, 50 for Silver and 80 for gold.

In September 1998 tier credits were introduced for status.

Later that decade Silver were given complimentary lounge access ...

When the fourth tier was introduced existing Gold became WP, Silver became SG, Blue became PS and members with no status were termed (nufin') Bronze.

There was that funny 'business service centre' lounge thingy for silvers. You swiped your card and got access to a 'lounge' with workstations and tea/coffee. Although I can't recall what years they operated, or how long they lasted (a year or so?). IIRC there were no lounge attendants.

I have no recollection of anything like this? I was Silver at that time and I recall having just the same lounge access as before and since.

this was when silver didn't have lounge access. The silver lounge (business centre) in Melbourne was further down the pier, past the old semi-circle Flight Deck Club. I guess if you were a member of flight deck, you wouldn't have used the business centre lounge... it was very basic... just workstation, tea/coffee. No lounge seating.

Anyone know if this became a thing?
No emails about it and the website hasn't been updated. Any PS's tried it?

Just noticed the QF website has been changed

So I got the email today from Qantas 'could you be earning more qantas points?' - and part of that email says 'business check-in for silver members'.

Following the link there is a big 'tick' under the 'priority check-in' headings... but the second table 'benefits with oneworld' has a footnote, #30, which says:

30 On Qantas International flights only, oneworld Ruby members receive priority check-in at Qantas Club or Premium Economy counters where available (not Business counters) and at the Premium Service Desk for domestic Australia flights.

So Qantas has carved out oneworld partner ruby members from business class check-in.

The note under Qantas Silver members says international business class check-in is only available where business class counters are operating. Is there a Qantas international flight without business class?? (PNG maybe?)

I tested this as well at Syd yesterday.
No issues with checkin. Although signs hasnt been updated (although they are electronic screens so...). Business says Gold and business. Premium economy says silver and QC.
But i used the business line and no one stopped me. Although once you start to check someone in are they really going to stop when they realise you arent in business?

While I'd like to believe your experience was reflective of staff being aware of the benefit, I think it's more likley - as highlighted in the priority boarding thread - that you simply got an agent who in fact had absolutely no interest whatsoever in the rules and benefits.

Much has changed over the years. I can't recall the last time I used a checkin desk. What with Q Reader, mobile checkin, Q Club checkin and carry on luggage. Oh yea was EK FLIGHT TO DUBAI when I needed to checkin luggage ....
