QF says PER AKL service demand higher than expected.

QF have no idea about growing revenue. If they did they wouldn't have been surprised by the success of this route.

If Iron Ore prices stay high and there is a growing demand for mine workers in WA, this route will be popular for a long time. There are a lot of mine workers that live OS and work in Australia- a lot of which travel from New Zealand-Aukland to Perth, then onto the Pilbara and other industry locations.

Reality is many of the mine projects are transitioning from construction to production phase which generally requires less staff and slightly different skills

But this route isn't about mine workers in WA, does mining only take place from December to April, and have the rest of the year off? (rhetorical question) And do FIFO roster changes only take place around weekends? (not so rhetorical, but I do recall the Karratha- east coast flights used to be mid week).

I think the permanent, year round soon to be daily AKL-PER NZ service, with VA codeshare is more likely to serve the mining traffic. QF's service seems mainly geared towards holiday makers (like NZ's seasonal PER-CHC service).

If the route was a success, and they are using spare aircraft anyway, why not do this over the other school holidays as well - or better, permanently?

Instead of making the all the cutbacks in QFi... Or having the "spare" plane on PER-HKG/SIN

But I wander

The issue really is that QF is competing against NZ which has a hub operation out of AKL. Not all people live in AKL so NZ with superior NZ domestic connections, and also Pacific Island connections as well, can tap into a much larger base for its year round daily service. QF struggled as well when it had a AKL-ADL service.
I, not living in AKL, would rather connect in SYD or MEL to get to other Australian destinations, and I do see quite a few transfer passengers from WLG when I do. Of course if doing the red-eye flights I would think the PER-AKL sector would be much better than 2 shorter sectors and transfer interrupting sleep but for a day flight I prefer the 2 shorter flights.

That's very true, but QF has domestic connections in WA (and Jetstar in AKL, but that doesn't really count.)

And not forgetting that NZ has a "virtual hub" at the PER end as well with codeshare connections to the VA WA network + SA flights to JNB.
