But don't you need a 50% premium above economy to redeem on WT+ ???
Earn and Burn rates are not linked. Its a 100% premium for business class award over economy award, but points earning rate is only 25% bonus.

I wonder if the QFF program will be adjusted yet again to account for "premium economy"
My guess would be that the upgrade path from economy to business will be cut off or at least require a lot more FF points than is needed now.

I would assume upgrades from Economy will be to Premium Economy, and upgrades from Premium Economy will be to Business Class.

I also guess they may use a new premium economy category to modify the earning rate for JQ Star Class.

Can you crrently UG from whY to F? If not then I think a lot of people will be very unhappy that they wont be able to UG from whY to J on a similar basis...

Then prepare for some unhappiness. Seems some people may want it both ways - configuration with 4 cabins and retain Y->J upgrades.

If you want to upgrade from Y to J then don't book on flights operated by 4-class aircraft.

I guess the people most hurt by this will be those currently flying a lot under a strict whY policy who currently UG to J on points - not a lot of fun for them.

I am wondering how this might affect the dynamics of the J-F UG process and generally the J cabin...

Very little impact I would expect.

Note that with BA, when booked into WT+ there is often a good chance for an op-up to CW if they need to roll the cabins forward due to overbooking down the back.

It is for this very reason that I am not impressed by the introduction of Qantas Premium Economy.

Look what happened with AirNZ. :-|

Expect QF Premium economy to be priced at around double the price of discount economy. Many people will not be happy that they will not be able to upgrade from WHY --> J anymore.

The simple solution is to just avoid routes with the A380 which I will be avoiding anyway. Unless it will be unavoidable to avoid them.

I owuld much prefer an upgrade system Y - Y+ and Y+ to J

I am happy to pay a bit more for the Y+ seat. I cant usually run to J fares.

So with the cough QF waitlist system for upgrades, at least I would know if I cant get an upgrade to J I wont be sitting in a 31" Y seat for 12hours.

When AirNZ introduced premium WHY, they changed their Airpoints program such that what had previously been the number of points/airbucks required to upgrade from WHY to J would only get the punter into premium WHY.

i.e.

Before:

- X airbucks/points would allow upgrade WHY to J.

After:

- X airbucks/points will allow upgrade WHY to premium WHY.
- X airbucks/points will allow upgrade premium WHY to J.
- 2 x X airbucks/points will allow upgrade WHY to J.

If QF Premium economy is modelled along the same lines as BA World traveller plus with 32 or 40 seat cabin then the same issues that occur now with requesting Y --> J upgrades will occur requesting Y --> Y+ upgrades for the future QF product. Requests will go in the waitlist queue with status being the determining factor.

Unless purchasing a confirmed QF Premium economy seat this will not solve upgrade issues experienced now. And just remember that QF will be just as likely to leave Premium economy empty rather than op-up passengers just for the sake of filling the cabin.

indeed they will. However, A has found that the additon of WT+ cabin has reduced the number of WT seats considerably and they are more often in an situation where WT is oversold and they need to op-up some passengers. That also often means that WT+ passengers have a chance for an op-up to CW. And since there not many WT+ seats, someone with status in that cabin has a good shot at any op-ups that may be needed.

Many people here and on FT, being travellers with some OW status, have reported op-ups from WT+ to CW. The reported rates for such op-ups seems to be a lot higher than for any QF op-ups or even other cain op-ups on BA.

I will confirm that on the BA routes i fly SYD-SIN-LHR and the reverse (Yes i have to go back to regular whY for 45 mins to MEL) i have been op-uped a number of times from WT+, and i am only a SG.
And also from whY to WT+ due to full planes.

The QF system has a similar problem with Z class - these are FF point first class tickets that show on the website as Economy !!!

Sounds like a good theory. I am not expecting an op-up but with some luck I will get one on BA next week. The WT+ cabin is full and I have 21J pre-allocated.

On the routes downunder, after BAEC elites (and I've also witnessed a BAEC Blue person get op upped over several other oneworld emeralds/sapphires...), BA does prioritise QF elites over other oneworld elites. QF WP out of Oz should stand a decent chance if they have to do op ups.
