That would be fantastic if it could fly DXB to SYD direct - I would actually be able to use points for my parents to fly to visit me here :D

I just checked BA - from SYD - LHR it is about 400 pounds each way for Y and about 600 for Y+. That's not too bad really (about A$3K return).

On another point - I have a booking with QF domestic that is coming up as ecconomy restricted. It's Y class. Why would this be?

If this is on checkmytrip.com, this seams to be a common problem that some of our IT guru's could probably fix. The main thing is the code is Y class which in the eyes of QF give you ultimate flexibility. :p

It seems that DXB are arranging for many gates to be A380 2-level compatible.

It would not surprise at all if Qantas decide to rearrange their announced plans and schedule an A380 route Oz-DXB-<europe>

Great circle distances (miles):
SYD-LHR = 10573
SYD-DXB-LHR = 10902
SYD-SIN-LHR = 10672

So, what is 230 miles worth of fuel for an A380 worth?

To keep this on-thread, I'm already a fan of WT+ (cough, op-ups to J, cough), so QF will need to persuade me ... and I'd prefer to stop-over in SIN than DXB.

Y+ is set to be publically announced by QF within the next few weeks.

Some A380 info is available on QFlyer - Qantas Fleet Information (scroll down)
yes.. there will be some errors... alot of info to have to maintain and update!

I bet you that QF will do an Air NZ and will haul the A380s out of service and increase Y+ seat count a few times :D it will be a popular cabin!

For pricing, we nay get an idea based upon the surcharge from WT to WT+ on BA when flying on a LxONEx type fare. However, one media report suggests better food/wine than Y so, and of course we are talking about a new product from QF, so expect it to be a little higher.

Probably not much when purchased in Dubai.

When purchased by Emirates?

I think that the restrictions on the flexibility of the A380 (much larger pax numbers without proportionately much higher pax baggage space) will be a good thing for all but the most dicsount whY pax - it might actually encouraged more space per pax - if only in the premium cabins.

I am really looking forward to the A380 - just hope I will be in a job where I can still fly (I had tacit approval from mrssimongr last week that the next job can have travel even if we have kids :))

Considering the number of A380's ordered by the home carrier, that is not really surprising.

I doubt QF will fly an A380 to Dubai.

The article mentions DXB will be looked at once A380's come on line. No mention of it being an A380 though.

A 787 would seem more practical

Darwin received it's A380-capable aerobridge today... bringing our total bridge count to 4.

Obviously we'll never see a scheduled A380 service, but the amount of medical/mechanical diverts we receive I guess makes it necessary.

But can't and A380 be loaded and unloaded from a normal airbridge, just need to use the stairs for pax and the elevators for food carts ?

The existing ones in Darwin can't - not sure of the reason, but I was talking to the safety officer late last year. I think our bays may be too close together (the new bridge is on bay one, on the far left of the apron).

It's not a double story bridge anyway.

A recent schedule change email from QF, prompted me to look at an upcoming (all economy I thought) QantasLink 717 segment on CheckMyTrip…

I don’t know if it is just a feature of the new version of CheckMyTrip, but the flight I am booked on now appears as “Premium economy”!

Venturing a little further, and checking my booking on the Qantas website reveals –
Status: Confirmed, but no class for that segment! (Previously it was “Economy”)

So, is this just a flaw in reading QF booking codes, or something more?!

Now confirmed:

Thursday July 12, 10:01 AM Fourth class for Qantas flights

Qantas will add a fourth class to some of its planes when the A380 superjumbo enters service next year.

A premium economy seat that will offer a cheaper alternative to business class will be introduced on the A380, CEO Geoff Dixon told The Australian.

Other airlines have seen a strong response to the introduction of premium economy, which is priced higher than a full economy fare but is significantly cheaper than business class. It typically offers increased leg room as well as better food, wine and other amenities.

Mr Dixon told the newspaper that premium economy would also be introduced on other Qantas aircraft. - Travelpress travel news

My original post turned out to be a class booking code issue, not an exciting preview of a new seat, but anyway.... Other than maybe a slight pitch difference before and after the over wing emergency exits, I couldn't physically make out a "premium cabin" on the National Jet I was on...but pitch can be valued at a premium I guess.

Oh, and while I’m at it, on QF, the pitch in row 1 on an all economy 717 sure beats that in row 1 "J" on a 737-800! AND, who ever decided to place locks on the overhead lockers at row 1 on Qantas aircraft needs the sack… OMG, QF premium customers can’t even place their belongings in the bins above them, worse than the take your chances to board last on AA!

I wonder if the QFF program will be adjusted yet again to account for "premium economy"

I am assuming it will be handled the same as BA WT+, where it earns full economy SCs and a 10% cabin bonus on points. Seems fair to me.

But don't you need a 50% premium above economy to redeem on WT+ ???
