No one is addressing the big issue. Without a boarding pass, what will they put in my jacket when they hang it so they know where to return it? Surely, they want just be scribbling on a piece of paper my seat number?

A hangar with a label indicating seat number (instead of size)?

That will be the sustainably grown timber coat hanger with engraved seat number as all plastic coat hangers will be banned

Paper trumps electronic every time for reliability and efficiency in these situations, same for event/stadium entry.

Sustainability & waste reduction..... GREAT.
We're doing the same things in the global company I work for. Makes perfect sense.

But not sure that QF has thought this one through 100%.
The list QF announced sounds like a list we had from our first "no-idea-is-too-stupid-to-say-out-loud" meeting on the topic. That quickly got whittled down to ideas that were reviewed and scrutinised to be achievable, impactful and did not harm operational efficiency.

As long as they still have the vintage dot-matrix printer churning out the pax manifest at the gates... we'll at least have that as a reminder of the good old days when life was simple :)

As I use my paper boarding pass as a reference for when I need to go to the gate and which gate, does this mean I can wait for my name to be called.

Don’t forget to carbon-offset the cost of carrying that extra weight in hangers around the globe....

I'm happy with boarding passes on my phone. Saves me having to look for them! iPhone I use the apple wallet to send boarding passes to so plan to use that if any flights don't post.
I also like not having to wait for cards to be posted out as some have gone astray with other programmes for months!

I'm all for the environment. I've been taking my water bottle on flights recently even in premium cabins so it's one less plastic water bottle used. I've become more rubbish conscious after seeing a video of ocean life amongst a sea of plastic. I've seen a little blue penguin on the beach - had died from a fishing line/hook. I can't bear those scenes. It hurts.

I would support bamboo cutlery or straws as an alternative to plastic whether it's hotel or flights.

I think it's fine to print boarding passes for those that need them. But overall I think a push needs to be made to prevent unnecessary rubbish. It's depressing when you're in a country or a beautiful spot and see rubbish around. I'm going to do my bit. I'm not always great at it but at least I try. Whether or not Qantas benefits financially is irrelevant to me. The environment is the bigger picture.

Yes there is far more wasteful items namely - plastic cups, supplying duplicate serviettes, plastic cutlery. They really need to adopt the bamboo cutlery (which is biodegradable) or go back to using metal cutlery and non single use cups.
metal cutlery. Went to a lecture on our recent Antarctica cruise by an expedition member who was passionate about the impact on the oceans from all the waste drifting around. I asked her about biodegradable Bamboo and while she felt it was better than plastic her push was for using items such as metal and using them for many years as even biodegradable bamboo came with an impact of toxins in the creation and break down.

I do use my phone for boarding passes, but I must admit I like paper esp for International.

Sure, if the devices are taken to Apple for recycling. Just like paper BPs could be perfectly recycled if disposed of appropriately.

I suppose at some time I might take the 5 old phones and tablets I have lying around to their respective optimal recycling places.
in many places you can take electronics to Officeworks and they organise the recycling. We had a number of desktops, screens, printers etc stored in th house from when we closed our office and we were able to take it all there for recycling.

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, the Frequent Flyer Concierge team at Frequent Flyer Concierge will help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Doesn't seem to be the case, judging by the number of times I'm asked to email a copy of the BP when claiming missing points.

And can we look forward to meal shortages when this is in effect?

"The company said it also aimed to cut down on the volume of items airlines were required by law to dispose of permanently, such as quarantined food on international flights and hazardous materials."
yes I was wondering if that was code for “Cafe breakfasts” and other reduced meals :)

Oh well, maybe it's back to fish and chips finger food! o_O:p

I guess we all need up to date and modern smart phones made of precious metals from the congo rain forest. At least it will make us feel better that less paper is being used.

Use mobile BP tonight...FA still wanted to see BP when on board so had to grab phone out of pocket and reopen Qf app...what happens if the battery in phone dies? ps I do carry a powerbank these days ;)

So how am i going to keep adding to my collection????????
I have a stack bigger. I suspect the size of that pile comes nowhere near being representative of the actual number of flights you have actually taken.

Its a habit that i picked up from a former employer. When we travelled we had to also produce and submit the BP, as one very senior manager got caught buying an aircraft ticket then cancelling the flight and pocket the money. He would then submit the original ticket to the company in his expenses. His downfall was he was also rorting taxi costs, which he got caught on. Rumour was he skimmed many tens of thousands $$$$ and it was a ~$20 taxi fare that brought him unstuck.

This is where the FF card comes handy at the gate. Now that I've changed the battery in my phone there's hope of it lasting for longer but still ABC or BBC News are often way too interesting to read on the way to the airport and the little mobile gadget is offline at the airport.

When are we going to see the argument for "hemp based" recyclable items? Better than bamboo?

Just wandering
Fred

Tee hee, large pile, a great achievement for those who do not live with a tidy mad/tidy freak of a partner!
I got scolded when my pile got a big high, 20 I think, and I was asked, whats the point of keeping them when a lot of the ink of mine have gone!
If they are still legible, thats very good.
If you keep them like that, they do fade.
Not sure, but I think someone mentioned on here that certain photo albums without a certain chemical, maybe not plastic page dividers, or something, can extend the life of the ink printed on those BPs.
If airlines still had dot matrixs printers, then yes, those BPs would probably last longer, but with thermals, as is used now, it will fade.

NOW, thinking out of the box.
And who knows, someone at the red tailed plane co might be working on this.
Bonus QPoints if we use our own devices with QR code on it to board.
And no little slip of paper to remind of seats.
And have to remember to keep smartphone on till seated, making sure it does not fall off if going up the 737 rear doors via stairs.
200 Qpoints for "paperless checkin"? **Perhaps.**
