I remember a few years ago flying to Perth on an international flight that was going on to J'berg, is it still possible to do this? I'm planning a trip for my hubby's 50th Birthday and am thinking of going business class from Syd to Pth, and of course international J class is much nicer than the domestic one.

Methinks you'll find that QF codeshare with SA on the PER-JNB route, and operate SYD-JNB nonstop.

hgwells01,

I believe the only option for a 'better J' seat is on a B743 though the reliability is questionable and these are being phased out ASAP.

The flights Syd - J'berg are QF63 (direct) or domestic to Per then QF303 to J'berg operated by South African Airways.

The 743's that ran SYD-PER-JNB were typically seasonal flights. The best bet might be to track down a 333 operating the sector. Typically this is the first Monday flight (SYD-PER and PER-SYD, I think it is a plane swapping exercise of the aircraft operting PER-SIN). Also the evening flight (583?) has a smattering of 333's on it as well (although this may change if y ubook too far ahead!)

(or book one of the 743's that are operating the sector now)

Ok should have said probably looking Apr - Jun next year as i'm tagging on a Kimberly cruise either Orion or True North) to the journey, ya only turn 50 once so I thought i'd really spoil him. We are in Newcastle, so I could do Virgin premium econ to Melb then Melb Pth if there was a better chance of International J class on that route. Have tee'd it up so, he will just come home from work and i'll say, better pack your bags dear, not going to be home for a month and not tell him where we are off to :)

Similar question but I can't locate the thread on this topic. Is it possible to book F on the domestic sector of an international flight (eg. QF 9 SYD-MEL)? If someone knows where this thread is located, I'm happy to be directed.

QF no longer sells F on the domestic sectors of international flights. In fact, some of the flights that are 3-class for the international legs are operated by 2-class aircraft on the domestic legs for aircraft positioning purposes.

Also note they have been steadily reducing the number of domestic legs of international flights.

Interesting. Thanks NM. I had noticed this with the SYD-CNS JQ flight which appears to no longer bookable for domestic travel.

A few years back I managed to use FF points to upgrade J to F on QF9 MEL-SYD. A v nice breakfast was served and I was the only passenger in the F cabin. Sadly cannot be done any more.

In more recent times, even when a 3-class was available, one could only book J or Y (J bookings would often find PAX in an F seat [with J service]).

Some years ago when QF31 went SYD-MEL several times a week (around 9 in the evening) before flying off from MEL to SIN at about 2am I once used QFF points to travel in F.

Service was a meat pie!

It doesn't appear as though the QF9 can be booked all the way to SIN for departures from SYD. When chosing SYD-SIN on 25/7 it shows all flights by MEL but with domestic connecting flights to MEL, not QF9. Meanwhile, J is bookable for MEL-SYD on that flight.

If I purchased a J seat SYD-MEL perhaps they'd bump me to F as a WP; it seems the cabin would be empty for that leg but maybe they just want to keep them nice and clean for the long haul to SIN.

Qantas does restrict sales based on sectors. For example. they won't sell QF10 as LHR-SYD, but often sell it as LHR-SIN, LHR-(SIN)-MEL, SIN-MEL or SIN-(MEL)-SYD. I all depends on how much they want to protect the ex-MEL availability on that route.

On some days they show the F cabin on the J seatmap (very common) and even sometimes show the upper deck on the Y seatmap (such as for 24th July). So just seems to depend on where they believe the sales demand is going to be.

It seems like you were *very* spoilt in your choice of meal then serfty

Catering was better in the Old First Class lounge at SYD overlooking Gate 31 (which I had access to bing top tier QFF Gold) than the meat pie.

Some days I would a prefer a meat pie to the main meals served on some international flights....

I travelled SYD-MEL in F in 2005/6 with Qantas about 3 times, maybe 4. It was good fun. The price (when booked correctly) was often ~$1 more than the J price.

They would normally provide you with as much Dom you could drink, and you would have access to the old F lounge in the Intl terminal before the flight. The meal would be 2 course - a starter with soup normally and a main. Don't think there was a desert. It included a good approximation of the F food service on a long flight (eg tablecloth, silverware etc).

You would be sharing the cabin with off-duty staff flying back to MEL, or by yourself (as I was once!). Safety Demonstrations are very fun when it's a 1 on 1 affair when you know the words to the spiel! At least one CSM remembers me from one of the flights... Scary because I saw her next about 12 months after it, and she knew me!

All gone now though. Was fun while it lasted!

And is it any wonder? Doesnt it annoy you when they pick up on the anomolies!
