ANA's upcoming 777-300ERs will have a 2 x 4 x 3 config in Y, which means that the cabin also has to be 89% full before anyone gets allocated a "climb-over-two-people-to-get-out" seat.

Except the problem with 2x4x3 is that the '3' seat is by the window - where lots of people like to sit... as they do on the aisle. I can't imagine seeing a whole plane with just the middle and window or aisle and middle occupied (with with either the window or aisle left free!)

FWIW Egyptair also employs the same 2x4x3 config on their 777s. I've seen a 'first tier' airline with it as well but can't put my finger on it at the moment.

I couldn't imagine that happening much at all either, but I can readily imagine a whole plane with the aisle and window occupied, but the middle seat empty.

If you leave the middle of the 3 empty, and have the window and aisle occupied, the person in the window seat still only has 1 person (and an additional empty seat) to climb over, so the statistic is valid.

And what window seat preferrer wouldn't be happy with an empty middle seat next to them? (and likewise for those in the aisle seat).

CO have it on order for the 787 but AFAIK Egyptair are the only current operator and its only one A/C:

If it was so good I am sure it would have spread, we have had widebodies for a long time.

Agree - but that supposes a whole bunch of single travellers - and many people travel in a couple of with a friend - so they'll occupy two seats together... and then the third will take an aisle or window.

Looking at other configurations of 3's (like 3+4+3 or 3+3+3) you rarely ever see the middle consistently free.

Exactly. Assuming the number of Y seats on NH's new 77Ws will be the same as the current config, there would have to be 123 of the 138 seats allocated before any of the pax had to climb over two people to get to the aisle.

Seems like reasonable odds to me!

I am probably thinking of early versions of widebodies - like the 747 and tristar which I think was introduced in a 2+4+2 and 3+4+2 configuration? before finally economics kicked in and we got 2+3+4 (for example the Airl Lanka Tristars) 3+4+3 on 747s .

I'll have to go digging around for old seat maps :)

A 2-3-4 config , I'd love to be sitting in a K seat there.

3 other people to annoy when you want to get up, plus the FA's will need to send your meal to you via slingshot...

In the no good deed goes unpunished file:

Was booked this afternoon on QF 805 CBR-SYD depart 1800.

Got to the airport just after 1700 and went to the QP to check in, I was offered the opportunity to take an earlier flight, i.e. QF1493 due to depart at 1735.

Not having any luggage and wanting to get home quickly I took the offer. Fatal mistake. QF1493 was getting later and later and I went to the desk to ask if I could be moved back onto QF805. "Sorry the flight is full". Ok I can see why it would be popular time to go home on a Friday night.

Eventually 1493 was called for boarding and we headed home nearly an hour late.

The real problem, the male FA apologised for being late saying that he was on another flight that was late into SYD.

My beef is that Qantas must've known that this flight was going to be late and should not have offered people like myself a change to an allegedly earlier flight that was going to be later than my original flight.

Of course if you're going to have a bad day then it all happens, my morning flight QF704 was also about 30 minutes late.

Still, I did the nice thing this morning and after going through the security line went upstairs to put my shoes back on dodging the explosives detector and sat down next to a lady and invited her into the CBR QP. She was pleased and we had a nice talk. No nothing further but you can sometimes meet interesting people this way.

Have been a fan of MH's 2-5-2 for years. So long as I am in the 2, and its worked so far. Don't like my odds in 2-4-3.

Have never flown an SG 777 because 3-3-3 just seems dopey. Why have two PAX per row climbing over two others when you can go 2-5-2 and just have one?

Cheers skip.

3-3-3 seems to be the industry standard for Y seating on the 777.

Very few airlines have 2-5-2, and the same goes for 3-4-3

People get hung up on the middle seat in the 5. On planes that have three by the window, you still have to climb over two people to get out, but perhaps the window is the consolation prize!

On the flights I have been on they have generally been empty, and if not have had someone from a family group travelling together in it.

What happened or what had you asked to cop a response like that?

While your customer details are still 'live' in Altea checkin QF can retrieve the staff number of every employee involved in each step from OLCI, bag drop, seat changes, boarding pass reprints, FA who boarded you at gate etc. Everything is flagged so if you cop any grief, get the staff number so you can put the employees full name in your letter of complaint.

I fail to understand how being rude to pax would give anyone a warm fuzzy feeling. If they can't stand the heat they need to get of Hiroshima!

Hope your next experience with QF is a better one.

Just curious, how do you know so much about the "inner workings" of QF's systems, are you a current QF employee?

The cabin has to be 89% full before anyone gets allocated the middle seat of the 5. Not a pleasant thought to be stuck in it, though. Not pleasant at all!
Not pleasant at all! I don't even want to think about a middle seat in a row of 3 let alone a middle seat in a row of 5! :(

You are worried about having a bad day. How about being delayed at least once a week most weeks for the past 20 months? It is not often that my Sunday night and Friday night flights are on time. I'd be laughing if the weekend was on a Tuesday and Wednesday. ;)
