QF grumbles

sorry it's OT but That is disgusting (the NZ 10 abreast 777 seating) - very disappointed in that. It's a total turnoff on the EK 777's, it might not be much but that extra person across makes me feel like im on top of the passenger beside me.

Technically it's only 23cm less space they have to play around with in a B777 cabin compared to a B747 cabin.

I suppose divide that across 10 people and it's 2.3cm of space they are each missing out on. No doubt it'll also lead to more narrow isles, so chances are it's really only going to be a cm less space than on a B747 seat.

All that said, it's a sneeky way of "announcing" it.

2.3cm in Y is HUGE.

When the seat is only 17-18cms if you lose 2.3 that is over 10% of your area lost.

I think 9 across on a B777 is plenty and airlines are getting gready with 10.

have you flown on 10 abreast 777 in Y? I find it horribile

I have not heard one positive comment from a 10 abreast 777 experience.

Thankfully I have never had the reason to fly in one...

In other words, 2.3cm = 1 in.

Not sure how much they can reduce the aisles (i.e. only 2 of them) in order to compensate enough for a seat width reduction.

I always thought the 777 had more width than a 747. Don't VA use this in part of their marketing pitch (no pun intended) in order to beat off the QF 747 aircraft?

Of course, maybe they aren't going to put 3-4-3 in it after all. BA did it once and backflipped.

Hey I never said I was a fan of it, and given space in Y is already at such a premium I think that other B777 operators could almost use EK and NZ's A/C as a marketing tool of their own (eg, VA could do something about being the widest 777 seat on the pacific route when compared to NZ etc...)

777-300 Interior Cabin Width 19 ft 3 in (5.86 m)
747-400 Interior Cabin Width, 20 ft (6.1 m)
747 Classic Interior Cabin Width, 20 ft (6.1 m)

MH have a 2x5x2 config in their 777 as they figured as the middle seat 'F' in the centre row of 5 would be vacant given their average load factor it offered 4 lots of 2 seats together for couples eg AC DE GH JK.

Not a fan of 2-5-2 in the slightest. The middle seat in the 5 has the worst of all worlds.

Back in 2001 I had a great transatlantic flight on an AA 777 due to being the only one in the middle 5 row. Certainly got a lot of sleep - due to the space (there was still More Room Throughout Coach then). Probably more comfortable than the old J that AA had.

Well if your the only one in a row of 5, then yes 5 abreast would be quite comfortable.

If you one of 5 others sharing the row, then the middle seat of the 5 is not a good one...

Only one person in 2-5-2 has to climb over 2 people in that configuration compared to 2 in 3-3-3.

It may be more family friendly than 3-3-3, but not fun flying solo.

2-5-2 would cater for a tall person who wanted to lay down with 5 seats to themselves!

The cabin has to be 89% full before anyone gets allocated the middle seat of the 5. Not a pleasant thought to be stuck in it, though. Not pleasant at all!

ANA's upcoming 777-300ERs will have a 2 x 4 x 3 config in Y, which means that the cabin also has to be 89% full before anyone gets allocated a "climb-over-two-people-to-get-out" seat.

2 x 4 x 3 seems like a good idea... Covers most travelling group sizes (except for my family of 5...)

2x4x3 will be an issue for the load and balance of the plane.

No more than the 1-2-2 config that QF uses in some 767's.

Just position the freight a little differently or adjust the trim.

Well that's the best attempt at self moderation between two members in a thread that I've seen in a long time .

Start out at loggerheads, end up almost agreeing with each other

Was this just a pre-amble rant to your TR, thewinchester :?:. Admittedly, it has created some healthy discussion ;)

Those 767's only have 5 rows, your talking 20-30 rows with an extra 100Kg off the COG, airlines have seen too many balance issues causing accidents in the past to rush out and make things more complicated for themselves, which is why even configs still dominate the landscape.
