I'm sorry, I've been away for a while and I half suspect that this question would have been discussed in my absence. If so, maybe someone can direct me to the thread. If not, here's an invitation to share your knowledge and/or opinions.

I am wondering about the implications of the new Qantas alliance with Emirates for its commitment to OneWorld.

Why do I wonder? Well, it seems to me that EK, being outside of OneWorld, is more or less a direct competitor to various OneWorld members, such as BA, and that these parties might not be too happy with the QF/EK deal. Is OneWorld now of reduced value to QF? What are the implications for us QFF members, if any?

I'll welcome any comment.

I think it's too soon to tell, but flyers arrive into Australia on many different airlines, some being OneWorld member airlines and they'd probably continue to book with Qantas to continue earning to their FF programs, which gives Qantas a reason to stay in the alliance. Considering QF has a special agreement with AA, and now EK, perhaps they don't need OneWorld for their own FF's though, in perhaps a short sighted view of those two airlines covering enough destinations, but I'm not so sure they think that way. Either way, while we wont see the numbers, they will, and I doubt they'd leave OneWorld if they were getting a lot of traffic/business from them.

Many airlines that are members of the major alliances also have successful partnerships with airlines that are not members of the same alliance. Such relationships have been going on for years in the airline industry.

OW still benefits from QF (at least with me, I will always look for OW options before expanding my search to other airlines) and I suspect that QF benefits from OW in a similar fashion.

Alliances are not mutually exclusive arrangements, and QF (as well as most OW members I would expect) has had relationships with other airlines outside the OW sphere for quite some time. It's just EK/QF is so heavily publicised.

QF for many years has had strong partnerships with airlines outside of oneworld - eg. South African (Star), Air France (skyteam, now diminished) and Jet Airways (unaligned)
