Just a little head-up for those contemplating using QF points to upgrade on EK metal codeshared with QF

Short answer - not allowed !!

See the following when I tried to do this today:

[h=1]Upgrade - not available[/h]An upgrade is not available on this itinerary due to one or more of the following reasons.

  • not operated by Qantas
  • restricted or heavily discounted airfare (for example, Red e-Deal flight) or a Classic Award purchased with Frequent Flyer points
  • does not have an upgradeable class
  • a discounted Business Class airfare
  • a prize ticket or a promotional offer
  • part of a group booking. Contact a Qantas Office for an upgrade
  • a voucher for future travel
  • already flown
  • Not a flight sector

Sorry, but nothing new at all. Has always had to be QF operated on a QF code. People need to remember this isn't a merger or what ever, this is a JSA and code-share deal, the thing QF has with BA and has with AA.

I'm fairly sure RedRoo did mention that EK and QF were working on something regarding this.

Don't want to be disadvantaging your FF do you!

Can't upgrade on BA under JSA,
can't upgrade on any other oneworld airline

No surprise

They may well be, but at the moment Parr of the terms of upgrades using points requires Qantas metal. Until anything is announced there is not much we can do about it.

I am not sure why one would expect this to be possible. Especially as the approval has not been received.

I agree it is not "to be expected".

However, one piece of confirmed fact is worth, IMHO, more than a lot of speculation.

Remember too that some of the AFFers here are still having trouble navigating MMB and seat selections, let alone knowing some relevant facts about point upgrade.

QF has been trumpeting this deal wide and loud, so I thought to myself "why not push the boundary and see how it goes".

As far as "approval" goes, flights are now available to be selected / paid for; Same with seat selections....

Also of some interests is that I can use QF booking number to log on to EK site's MMB and see my flights there as well.

I guess this is also similar to AA and BA. Am I correct here ?

I don't expect this to be a benefit - it would be nice if it was. However the fact that we can't do it at the moment doesn't mean I can't do it in the future.

For example I can't book any awards ex-DXB on the QF website. I am hoping in the future that I will be able to.

It's a bit disappointing for people traveling from BNE, ADL, PER who used to be able to get an upgrade on a QF flight out of those cities to SIN when heading to Europe, but now unless they take an extra flight and go via SYD or MEL, there is no way to get an upgrade on the flight as they're only able to get a codeshare to DXB. They could only get an upgrade now on the DXB-LHR leg, if on QF metal.

Would be nice to see a change in policy, at least for the codeshares ex-AU on routes that have lost a QF metal service connecting to LHR, as otherwise the opportunities for upgrades have been significantly decreased from some cities.

Which basically makes the QFFP unviable to a lot of residents in those cities!

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Yup! (Or no more YUPs to be exact!) My parents have switched to SQ for all their international travel, and I'm sure others will do similar things.

oh yes, I think there will be a bit of that. A great pity as I have just getting my head fully around the QFFP. I love the seamlessness of the domestic and international programs. But there will be times when timing or somesuch mean that the extra points and SCs gained by having an extra flight to or from Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane just won't be enough.

Tonight I have been doing some quick calcs on those cards that I have that can earn points on SQ. I don't really want to try and master another program but you gotta do what you gotta do. I know, I know I'm told it's easy. And I already have points rotting in there.

A quick update, I checked with QF today and this is still not possible. Annoying for those parts of Europe that QF don't fly to. It means in forgoing the option or going via LHR an QF metal.
