QF Boxed Dinners

Booked a diabetic meal (dinner) on my MEL-SYD flight on Sunday and received a spicy chicken with rice and broccoli along with a bottle of water. The meal was tasty and flavourful. Its on par with the chicken with cashew nut option that I keep getting recently.

I don't know what typifies a diabetic meal, but your description almost sounds like the standard meal selection, except for you there is no risk of "missing out a choice" and I guess you got no chocolate. Maybe your variation has no sauce, which can be a source of quite some sugar depending on how they prepare the dish.

The meal that I received is also labelled GF (gluten free) and does not contain any nuts. I didn't receive any chocolate but that was because it was not offered/loaded but I would imagine the crew would go around with their tray and offer it to everyone.

There was a tomato based sauce with my chicken and it was not as heavy compared to the soy based sauce that goes into the chicken with cashew nut meal.

Travelled on QF 493 Yesterday , and the hot meal offered was Chicken and Cashew Nuts with Asian greens and Rice !

The photo doesn't do the meal justice, as the portion looks rather small, but it fact wasn't.

Delicious!

Great serving size !

Big Thumbs up !

All things considered, For a domestic Y meal, this meal was very good IMHO.

I will try to book more 'dinner time' flights on the golden triangle in the future to keep up with tasting the ever-changing selection :)

I have booked Eat on Q for roasted p::: and some sort of salad tomorrow QF171.
TransTasman.
It's in Y unless they give me an op up.
No camera but wonder if its a boxed meal.

I have had this meal a few times and again on Sunday. The portion size is OK. Think around 350 calories. The rice tastes funny (bland?), the greens are tasty and overall quite a good meal.

Not dinner, but lunch on yesterday's 881. A truly revolting snack. The panini itself tasted raw, the filling was quite unpleasant. MMs donated to Mrs BD who took one bite of the panini and put it back in the box. Ginger beer was the best part. Arrived quite late at OOL QP which was it's usual zoo prior to 2 QF departures.

That's a shame. I've seen QF cater these kinds of panini before (I think it might have been a vegetarian version of it), and they are very tasty.

I've tried a vegetarian 'Cheese and tomato toastie' which looked pretty similar but tasted OK, the bread wasn't raw or anything like that. It was cheese and dried tomato so pretty rich in flavour. Was about 95% bread though.

I wasn't going back for more but it was better than food I've had on comparable VA services, put it that way...

Had a pizza on lunctime SYD-MEL flight. Was quite ok and asked for a takeaway which was had for breakfast next day. ;)

Flew SYD-MEL on a dinner flight on Saturday. So SO glad I had a burrito before I got on. It was some sort of cheesy pasta with sundried tomato concoction. The pasta was so overcooked it slipped off the fork, there was almost no cheese and the tomatoes were flavourless. I ate four mouthfuls (hoping it would get better) before giving up. The alternative was a cold pork coleslaw thing. Lots of people don't eat pork for whatever reason (myself included), like lots of people don't eat seafood. I miss the days when the choice was a nice, safe chicken or beef/lamb. When did they decide it was okay to exclude large numbers of customers from one of the meal choices?

I'm flying to LA in a few weeks time. I will be packing my own food in case the international offerings are as bad.

Are the food choices better if you pre-order instead of waiting for on-board?

It depends sometimes yes sometimes no. I have been surprised at times. This flight I have been unable to use select on Q (it's unavailable on my ticket go figure) I wrote a letter(email) but the reply email from QF was long in coming and my flight was half over.

It still did not fix anything.

Not better but you get one additional mains option that's online exclusive. The rest of the menu is the same as on board but pre-selecting your meal at least guarantees you will get what you want (or at least that's the idea behind it).

I knew there was an additional option for the pre-selection in J, but if it also happens for Y flights that's a pretty good offer.

Yep, economy also gets an online exclusive option.

Sadly it wasn't me buying the fare, and I was in no position to dictate.

Getting off-topic here, so I'm going to drag it back: someone mentioned the pre-ordering is not available to all fare classes. I will go have a look at my booking now. :)
