QF announce rollout of Q streaming on all 767's

But given they won't be on at take off and landing then 10 hours of use should be enough for SYD-HNL with a bit of leeway.

I think the more interesting thing will be re-charging them prior to the next flight. What’s a typical amount of time on the ground these days, about 2 hours internationally?

I’m sure others will dispute or give more accurate numbers but I was under the impression the new iPad (3rd gen) takes up to 9 hours to completely recharge and the iPad 2 (2nd gen) 4 hours. There are mentions of fast charge to 80% or so, but I’ve seen articles saying a fast charge to 90% on the iPad 2 (2nd gen) taking 3 hours, much longer than the average turnaround time?

Ideally, in-seat power would be nice, but I’m guessing they chose iPad’s so they didn’t have to lay cabling…

I'm interested in hearing about how they will physically hand them out to passengers
a) at the terminal / gate?
b) onboard after take-off like how they distribute meals?
c) upon request?

With all the above, i'm even more interested in seeing how & where they'll be storing all these. I assume some sort of docking/recharding facility for them in some sort of trolley device.

On the Q Streaming trial aircraft the iPad’s were all kept in the seatpocket for each seat. They came in a case with some sort of tracking device attached so if you did get off the aircraft with one they could find you… or maybe it was a proximity alarm to the front door, either way, they weren’t handed out so much as there for use.

And another question, how do they make sure they get them back again! :)

Qantas announce streaming:
Trial was great. Looking forward to it on all the 763 fleet!!

Wow great questions, I'm sure QF haven't thought about ANY of them and have just rolled it out really quickly with no thought whatsoever and no trial and no feedback from staff or customers.... Ummmm Oh yea wait a second..... ;) :)

Sorry but I just can't believe the negativity on here sometimes. This is a great announcement!
Virgin announce streaming, via the same BoardConnect system:
Hope they will provide standard 3.5 1 prong headphones free of charge. I can see a heap of business pax who don't travel with them whacking on the laptop to stream the news through their speakers. Or *shudder* a kid whose family forgot headphones streaming the Wiggles.

Hope VA staff are happy to actively police this and make sure no one is playing anything through external speakers!

Feels pretty LCC to be honest. Not a huge fan but was expected I guess to save money.

Hmmmm......

Even at best if they take 3 hours to recharge, how do they do this for the SYD-HNL flight, as the plane is on the ground for only 90 mins before return flight...

Hmmmm not sure maybe they replace them as a apart of on loading?

What wireless devices can be used?

You can watch our inflight entertainment on your iPhone, iPad or laptop. Android devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy tablet, cannot be used during the pilot.

What security measures are in place to prevent theft of the iPads?

Apple's "Find My iPad" application is activated on each iPad. This will enable us to first lock down the iPads, and then determine their location whenever they are connected to a Wi-Fi or 3G network.

Will the iPads be replaced at the end of every flight?

The iPads will be cleaned and fully charged at the end of every day. The extra long battery life of the iPad means that it does not need to be replaced throughout the day.

Hmm, find my iPad is only good once you realise it is missing. By the time they work out which one it is, someone could have synced and restored it, making it impossible to find. In fact, if they had a laptop with them, they could do this before even leaving the plane. Alternatively, they could switch it off and again it would not be able to be found. Switch it on again somewhere with no connection and it's easy to make off with one. And no, I haven't thought about this, this is just the reality of the devices.

Mobile Device Management (MDM) solutions such as Apple's iPhone Configuration Utility and Profile Manager offer much more control than that. You can lock down functionality, ability to reset & sync, even lock the device into a single app. You can also restore the device to a known state quickly between flights. So could be done well but unsure if QF are implementing any of that.

It would seem better to also support Android, Windows Phone etc and just have everyone use their own device.

Except that the post above specifically said they are using "find my ipad" as security, which is nowhere near as comprehensive as what you have described. Using Find my ipad alone would not be sufficient. I suspect the FAQ answers don't give the full picture though of what security they are actually going to use, as that would make it more difficult for a cunning theif to help themselves.

Great that BYOD applies to q-streaming. Eventually the need for carrier supplied devices will be fairly small.

Sounds like a good idea but still a few details missing.

Would be interesting to see where these iPads will be stored and how they will be handed out and collected.

- When one boards the aircraft?
- After take off and will it impede the meal service?
- How will they be collected and somewhere along the way I am sure someone will try and pocket an iPad courtesy of Qantas?

I'm pretty certain it's been said before by QF that the streaming system will support non-iDevices such as laptops and tablets.
It may have related to the pilot only, but there's specificness there re not being able to use Android devices, including Tablets. (I did miss 'laptop').
