QStreaming on all Qantas B767 aircraft
Qantas Domestic ceo Lyell Strambi has just announced the rollout of the QStreaming inflight entertainment system across its full 23-strong Boeing 767 fleet.
The move follows a successful trial of the service earlier this year, with QF to partner with Panasonic and use its eXW system to provide more than 200 hours of on-demand IFE content via iPads to every passenger in both Business and Economy classes on the aircraft.

Who experienced the trial? Are devices only permitted to be powered on after the seatbelt sign is extinguished?

How is providing iPads to *ALL* passengers a good solution?

*ding* my iPad wont work
*ding* I dropped my iPad and now it wont work
*ding* why can't I check my facebook up here?
*ding* Where do I keep it during takeoff and landing?
*ding* what iPad, you never gave me one, certainly not that one in my handbag..
*ding* I refuse to use Apple products, please make my other tablet device use the IFE
*ding* whats this "control your Boeing" app all about? and why does it say "do not remove from coughpit" on this one?
*ding* can you please get me a drink in between sorting out those iPad issues
*ding* my wrists are sore from holding this iPad, who can I sue?
*ding* why is the person behind me still hammering the seatback? dont they have an iPad now?

I experienced the trial, and am interested to see if they'll be rolling out an app and how it's will work, as I recall there being several access points down the length of the plane and devices had profiles set up so they didn't overload any one point, so I'm not sure how it will work if they let users BYO.

As for the iPads in the trial, they were powered off at decent and started after takeoff. You couldn't use it during takeoff/landing as there was someone onboard checking things. But perhaps this won't be a problem when it's rolled out to all devices/planes.

The original idea was a trial with QF providing the iPads, moving to an app for iOS/android being made available so you can BYO. Obviously, you'll get people that haven't downloaded the app their first flight, but will do so for the next.

So I would hope the app is going to be made available instead of adding hundreds of iPads to 23 planes.

Yes I think making people bring their own devices is a *better* solution. No having to look after the devices, no handing out and collecting. Although it will up the amount of checking they need to do before take-off and landing (slightly), but may lead to better 'policing" of the rules..No doubt if they went with the above, there would be the opportunity to "hire" a device for flights.

Obviously someone has done the maths and figured out the cost of buying, modifying and maintaing X Thousands of iPads is less expensive than upgrading IFE systems.

Given the IFE solution would need server, screens, controls, wiring and I dare say new seats to support the screens.
Whereas the Qstreaming just a server and repeaters

I'm just happy they made the call to do it finally. Anything would be an improvement over watching the big screen.

+ cost of iPads, spares, servicing them, replacing them etc.

Am thinking whether this means that the Project Alpha remods for the old 738s may be bins plus IFE - hence giving QFdom an IFE solution for all major aircraft

From what I remember, there were numerous wifi hotspots on the plane and all very low power so you can only connect to one within a couple of rows of your seat.

It's possible to set up a 'local' app store and link to it from a portal web site that comes up when you connect to the wifi. So should be able to get up and running straight away.

I'd like to see Qantas put a band across the back of the seat you can hook your case into it and free up the table. Similar to what you can do on the seats with the pocket up the top.
Although then I guess they'd be liable if one fell and broke.

Qantas to launch QStreaming across B767 fleet

Sydney, 19 July 2012
Qantas is set to launch QStreaming on its B767 fleet following the successful trial earlier this year.

Qantas Domestic CEO Lyell Strambi said customers travelling on Qantas’ B767 aircraft will now enjoy in-flight entertainment (IFE) streamed direct to iPads in every seat.

"Following the successful trial of our QStreaming service this year, we will partner with Panasonic and use their eXW solution to provide over 200 hours of on-demand IFE content via iPads to every passenger in Business and Economy travelling on our B767 fleet," said Mr Strambi.

"Our customers were the first in the world to experience the ground-breaking wi-fi entertainment technology and we received great feedback from our customers during the trial this year.

"QStreaming will be available free of charge to all our passengers across the B767 fleet.

"We’re now looking at ways to evolve this technology platform even further with our partner Panasonic to bring new standards of in-flight entertainment to our customers."

The first aircraft is set to roll out in the fourth quarter of this year and will predominantly operate east coast routes and also across to Perth.

The launch of QStreaming forms part of a wider strategic investment across the domestic customer experience including enhancements to ground operations and further domestic aircraft upgrades over the next few years.

I presume they'll have it on the 767's on the SYD-HNL route? Its not really mentioned as article only refers to domestic routes.

Trial was great. Looking forward to it on all the 763 fleet!!

Wow great questions, I'm sure QF haven't thought about ANY of them and have just rolled it out really quickly with no thought whatsoever and no trial and no feedback from staff or customers.... Ummmm Oh yea wait a second..... ;) :)

Sorry but I just can't believe the negativity on here sometimes. This is a great announcement!

Thank goodness we have you as the voice of reason

This is good news albeit odd to put them on the 767s, IFE of the future I believe

Thanks, they are great questions, and only someone of my importance, significance and intelligence could ever have posed them. Little surprise Qantas hadn't thought about them. <insert emoticon here>

Yes sorry, I should just have faith without question, so many other elegant things in the world operate on such principlea, why not apply it to this too. So here goes: No doubt this isj ust one more in the series of great enhancements they are rolling out..??..?

But back to what I originally said..how is providing it to *ALL* (see this time I made it bold) a good solution? Yes it was trialled by some passengers, on some flights. But is the solution scaleable?

They are part of the QF 767 fleet are they not?

True, but the release specifically mentioned the domestic routes first which seems odd considering a few hours in a tube isn't as bad as the amount to HNL without decent IFE. I think that was the point being made at least ;)
