I went to book a midweek evening flight on 95 out of Melbourne and was somewhat stunned to discover that it only flew on Mondays and Fridays - has that always been the case?

When SFO services came online they reduced 95/6 to 2x weekly. Plenty of discussion here:

Ah Cheers! Bummer though as the evening departure/evening arrival is convenient.

Rumours that AA will fly daily to MEL from LAX. They might take up the evening flight, letting QF fly 6x weekly to SFO.

I'm guessing that those AA flights won't give us the same SC's though? (if it happens)

There will be a QF codeshare under the JV.
That would be great!

My experience with AA trans-Pacific economy is that it is >> QF trans-Pacific economy in F&B, (Elite) seating and FA presence.

It is possible that QF will restore the prior earning on AA once the JV starts. We don't have any confirmed details on the JV yet, just that is has been approved.

AA was the last airline partner to have their QF earn reduced. And that only happened because the DOT was being 'difficult' the first time they applied for a JV.

I suspect AA running an evening flight from MEL-LAX could be problematic - as it either means leaving the plane on the ground in MEL for 12 hrs or going against the grain with a daytime flight ex-LAX, something that no-one else does (for Australia flights, plenty to Asia though).

They've done similar before.
AA started their LAX-SYD route, which allowed QF to dump the 2nd SYD-LAX flight and reopen SYD-SFO.

AA does leave aircraft parked at outstations for some time in other places, manly in South America. No reason they wouldn't for an evening MEL-LAX route as well.

ANA keeps an aircraft parked in SYD all day between HND flights.

If I could find the thread about the US DOT approval of the JV I would have raised this six or so weeks ago when it happened.

I'm very curious as to whether earnings will go back to where they were before. If I remember correctly, QF spat the dummy and cut the earnings but stated in the DOT filing that one of the benefits would be, well, more FF benefits. I think the filing specifically referred to the reduction in earnings that had taken place.

There is one, VA6 which leaves LAX at 11:15am for Brisbane just once a week on Saturdays.
I wish there were more options like that though. It's useful to be able to leave in the morning, get back into Australia in the evening (VA6 arrives at 18:15) so you can have dinner and go to bed to get over jet lag.
Arriving early in the morning (whether it's the Australia or the USA end) is a bit of a nuisance. You've got to push through the whole day to get over the jet lag and you usually can't check into your hotel until the afternoon, meaning you can't really freshen up after your long haul.
The evening departure of QF95 on a Friday is handy as well for leisure travellers as you can knock off work on the Friday, go to the airport and head straight to the USA arriving Friday evening when you can check into your hotel and be fresh and ready to go for the entire of Saturday.
