So I recently was bumped down to Bronze QFF due to a year of inactivity having been silver for quite a while. I recently booked some intl flights but discovered to select my seat on the plane in advance will cost me $25? Has this always been in place for bronze? Or is this a new thing? Pretty distasteful fee to simply select a regular seat, not even an exit row or whatever.

Do they charge this fee regardless of class of travel? EG will a bronze member travelling in F be charged the fee?

It has always been the case as far as I know... Are you going to be travelling by yourself?

Yes by myself. I just want an aisle seat and not at the back. $25 big ones for a "full service airline"? If it was jetstar, fine..... but qantas?

Gosh maybe I finially discovered the value of being silver.... no seat selection fee ;)

Pretty sure it has been that way ever since the current process (Advance Seat Selection) was put in place.

This only applies for international flights, and is also charged by other airlines.
Heck, BA charge for seats in premium classes for those without sufficient status...

Wow okay. Guess it sucks to be bronze then.

Assume I just need to try to do online check-in early to get a seat I want.

Thanks all.

At a travel expo last year in Melbourne, I bugged the QF staff at their booth about this very same issue, $25 for standard seat, $80-$160 for an exit row.

Their response was that, most other airlines do it (I told them CX don't though), and that people generally don't raise an issue with it and their pax really enjoy their economy product for intl services. They also said you can choose your seat at the time of check in 24 hours prior to departure time without incurring a fee. Yay.

Wow I'm surprised people havent complained more about this. I fully understand and agree with a fee for exit rows but to simply pick window or aisle it's just a disgrace.

"We do it because everyone else does" is a rubbish excuse IMO.

Advance Seat Selection was introduced in July 2011. Seat selection is complimentary for:
  • Qantas operated domestic services
  • International First, Business or Premium Economy cabins
  • Chairmans Lounge, Platinum One, Platinum, Gold and Silver Frequent Flyer (or equivalent oneworld) members
  • Customers on the same booking and travelling with any of the above mentioned travellers

Alternatively, you can select your seat for free within 24 hours of departure via online check-in or with our customer service agents at the airport.

Sorry but this is the way of the future. Its hard to make money in the airline business so this is how its going to be. You will find more and more carriers introducing this kn future if they dont already have it.

was $20 when it was introduced in 2011. then $25 a year later... maybe $30 this year?

Correct me if I am wrong but all emergency exit row seats used to be $80. They are now $160 on longer sectors such as MEL-LAX and $80 on shorter sectors like LAX-JFK.

$160 is more than 10% than I paid for a MEL-JFK via LAX return airfare.... Purchasing exit rows on all sectors would have cost >30% of my flight price.

Medium haul used to be $80. It's now $90.

For Long haul like SYD-LAX, it was $160 but $180 now.

Short haul was $40 but $45 now I think.

The price you mentioned might be from long time ago? I only just started flying Qantas last year.

The price I mentioned $160/$80 was in August 2012 when I went to US Open 2012.

Great to see QF have enhanced their prices very recently. No announcement? ;)

This was done September/October last year and I can remember info being announced on the QF site about it
