Most credit card providers do rapid approvals to certain customer segments who meet risk and credit worthiness criteria.

Applied for the new Qantas premier card and I am an existing Qantas Citi card holder....Being retired and taking a pension from my self managed superfund was all too difficult to Citi and they then needed to speak with my accountant who described the conversation as "painful"...Now waiting to hear from them regarding my application...It appears that over 45 years as a holder of a credit card with no defaults or late payments means nothing today !!

It means you have no or very limited credit history. Banks / credit companies need reference points to assess how risky it is to lend to you. When you default they look at how quickly you repaid it and got things back in the black. Obviously continuous defaults and late payments has bigger impacts but with no track record at all its hard to assess. So they would look at other things such as income streams and savings to assess how much cash you have and if its safe to give you a credit card.

This is Citi that we're dealing with. That's the catch. I feel your pain.

I heard nothing from them at all, logged in to track progress of my application and get the message:

[h=1]Sorry! Something went wrong[/h]

Sorry, unfortunately we can't accept your application at this time.
Please try again later.

I too have held credit cards for over 40 years with zero defaults and pay it off in full every month. I applied for the lowest limit of $6000 since I just want to use it as a backup to Amex. I am disgusted in their credit assessment process, they have not even bothered to call me to ask for anything. I uploaded tax returns and financials. I have received no phone calls, no emails, nothing. I am self employed so it must have been too hard for them. I have zero debt and an income well in excess of what they need and a veda score over 850.

sadly, you're probably not attractive as a customer given your low probability of paying interest...

ive found that having more cards and a lower score (from multiple applications) actually makes applications quicker and faster than in the past - providers want high profit, interest-paying customers.

The funny thing is when I applied for the Amex qantas Ultimate about 4 months ago, It was approved instantly. The Amex was the first credit card I have applied for in over 30 years LOL, and this qantas one was to be the 2nd. A tiny $6000 limit and they think I am not credit worthy... or as you say , I won't give them any $$ in interest.

In my experience, AMEX is much less painful to deal with than Citi. In fact, I have AMEX to be excellent.

DITTO. Amex are the only bank I feel like I have any loyalty to as I've always found their service really good.
I almost missed a payment due to me misunderstanding bpay payments and they said they'd waive the interest since it was my first month (in the end the payment went through the day it was due).

Granted, they're also in my good books for sending me over 300,000p in since Nov last year. :)

Yes, I'm really impressed with Amex, I wish I started dealing with them years ago. ( I've been with them since March this year). I like their online interface also, its streets ahead of the Bank's . I do like their points too :D

Sad really, as this qantas card has so much potential, I didn't realise Citi would be this difficult to deal with.

I ended up cancelling the application, the staff were really nice but kept screwing me around I just don't have the time or energy at the moment to go through this drawn out application at the moment for a card that doesn't really offer me any benefits over my QANTAS Black (The gave me 50% off the annual fee after I sent in the QANTAS application) and my QANTAS Ultimate.

I would rather look at an AMEX Platinum Charge Card as my next go-to card

DITTO although I'm less interested if there's no sign up bonus (as I've already got the ultimate).

I applied online late Monday. The call centre rang me twice on Tuesday to ask some ridiculous questions (the answers to several of which were already given in the application documentation) and them wanting to know my residential addresses for the last 35 years !!!!

I received an SMS on Wednesday afternoon approving the application. So it took slightly less than 48 hours from application to approval.

One data point - I'm an existing Citi customer, so they've reduced the limit on the original card by the amount of the limit on the new QF card. So my total debt exposure remains the same as far as Citi is concerned. That was one of the things they asked me in one of the phone calls - would it be OK to reduce my other Citi card limit to accommodate the new card? So they are definitely treating the QF card as a Citi card.

Applied for QF card (I'm with CE - $149 for 60k is cheap, $10k spend/month is better than my Mac Black at $4k/month), they want past two tax assessments as well as company ABN statement < 30 days old.

I hadn't got around to uploading the documents when my accountant rang me to say she'd had a QF card person ring to confirm "a few details". First they had my gender wrong, then my current home address wrong and finally quizzed the accountant ("has she (me - male) really been in business for 44 years?).

Yesterday afternoon got a phone call from Philippine (?) QF/Citibank person wanting to "confirm a few details". Asked for previous residential address (17 years ago) and the one before (27 years ago). For the most distant address in time I gave right street, wrong number and she replied "that's not the street number I have here". Wow! She then thanked me for my time, apologised for mistaking my gender (didn't know my first name was a male name!) and hung up. Less than 2 minutes later I received a text saying my cc application had been approved. Suddenly no document uploads required.

Did they ring you for those bank statements?
This is the longest I've ever waited for a credit card to be approved...

I guess you never applied for the QF CU (now Qudos Bank) card. The process for this card sounds like a breeze compared to the pain, and I mean *pain* over a week or two (!) for myself and a co-worker to get approved with the back and forward with them over minor quibbles or questions or whatever and wanting tax statements and employer supported info and all the rest.

And I know that most people I have interacted with on forums etc had similar pain

However as others have noted Amex fairly painless and I'd note a year or two back Macquarie Bank underwriting the JQ Mastercard approved in minutes with a very polished and easy application system (I was impressed tbh specially after the pain of Qudos).

I've just got a SMS and email confirming my approval. :) Fingers are now crossed that they put the card in the post and I get it on Tuesday (or even tomorrow, but I won't hold my breath) as I've got a few large expenses I'd like to put towards the $3K min spend. :)

I just received the welcome email and it is stating I should receive the card within 3-5 days. We will see!

Amex got the Ultimate card to me within 24hrs so fingers are crossed. Having said that, as mentioned above, Citi and Amex have very different customer service philosophies...
