Qantas Tax Refund Classic Rewards

Hi,
I had a J classic reward booking MEL-BNE-CNS, however was involuntarily rerouted to the direct MEL-CNS flight. Am I eligible for a refund in taxes (understand points would be the same amount either way) as MEL-CNS was ~$81 vs MEL-BNE-CNS ~$145
 
I had same issue - was booked MEL-BNE-SIN-DPS and then with exit of Jetstar Asia was rerouted MEL-DPS direct - very happy, but no refund on taxes or points difference. The points I get, but I would have thought QF collecting taxes not being used, should be refunded?

That’s what I’m thinking too, someone definitely getting a free kick on taxes here.

Sent an email to Qantas asking for a refund and they obviously have no idea how the taxes component is calculated (person responding even addressed the email with a different name as to mine 🤣)

You should, in theory, and legally, be entitled to the tax back. You paid for a product you didn’t receive.

However, if you were to claim the ORC (original routing credit) I’d probably let the taxes slide?

It’s not really how it works.

Let’s play it out in reverse. You were booked on a cheaper routing but it gets delayed/cancelled for whatever reason. You get rerouted. New routing is longer. They don’t ask you for the extra points and taxes.

Last year I had a FCO-HEL-HKG-SYD booked as a classic reward in AY/QF J. There was a schedule change and I was given FCO-SYD on QF J. Even though that involved less points, I didn’t get the points differential back. Conversely, I think it would have resulted in an increase in fees and surcharges and I didn’t pay those either.

Three choices

- if you interested in status and points. Claim ORC.

- if you only interested in $, keep pushing for tax difference refund.

- decide it's all too hard fighting for the difference and forget it.

Understand those are your choices.

In the event of disruption or schedule changes you’ll be accommodated - at your option - on another service for no additional charge (per Finnair’s and Qantas’ contracts of carriage).

The same doesn’t necessarily hold for the reverse where there’s a loss to the passenger, as supported by 14.1 and 14.2 of the CoC: https://www.qantas.com/en-au/book/flights/conditions-of-carriage#refunds

In your particular case, it depends how the schedule change was processed and the options presented to you - was the change voluntary or involuntary for example

Involuntary - email was sent at 1:14am on day of travel and original MEL-BNE flight was departing at 7am

I understand that for you. I was responding to DAC1 who didn’t claim a refund.

In your case jc14 I would write back stating the taxes fees and charges for your original ticket were $xx. Due to a flight disruption you were involuntarily reaccommodated on a new flight.The taxes fees and charges for that flight were $xx. Under 14.2 of the contract of carriage you would like a refund of $xx.
