Qantas Streaming trial

Hi markis10 - what do you mean crippled N implementation? I stream from my iPad to my Apple TV with no trouble at all - I know this isn't streaming to multiple devices but I have no lag or problems? There is a limitation that I can't stream from other devices (iMac/iPhone) to the iPad but I thought that was an iOS 5 thing coming?

iPADs dont have true 802.11n implementation, restricting them to 2.4GHz and three non overlapping channels, now consider that in a scenario of operations in what is essentially a Faraday cage, with high throughput media rich demands across multiple clients. Your iPAD works well at home as does mine, in such an environment being proposed, its going to be a very different story. iPads also use an antenna orientation thats non standard, adding to the mix.

You have shattered my illusions. I just thought that getting media from my network storage to my iPad over my wireless network was done by magic. :(

I should add that the iPAD does support 5.8GHz as well, however not with the full 802.11n standard implementation! we work with a lot of schools and a couple of WiFi vendors and there has been issues in the past with similar uses and only 10-15 users.

Meanwhile, a bit more info emerging about Jetstars iPads (and their huge deployment delay), including the rumour that they have become involved with an Apple jailbreaking technology provider? (A Firm no-comment from an anxious looking MD)

Interesting interview. The extended life batteries won't last a year before having serious issues, iPad to hnl prob won't hold charge, the jailbreak... which I assume will happen due to iPad non-manageability to try and lock them down is bound to have issues. Looks like it will be a great rollout. Who plans this stuff?

Also a few things need to be remembered, unlike other client types, iPad's have storage built in, thus a smart enough piece of software would be able to use that to it's advantage. The movie does not need to be streamed minute by minute from a server. Furthermore it could retain more popular selections on the iPad itself.

I have a couple of movies on my iPad which are 720 x 480 which compress to roughly 500MB \ hour and are of a very high quality. Thus a 32 GB iPad could easily hold 60 hours of decent quality video for the more popular selections and then stream additional content as required, which at 500mb/hour comes in at roughly 1.5mbit/s per device. Of course put in better compression algorythms on the file or reduce the quality down a notch and the amount of video an iPad could store would increase and the data rate requirements would drop.

Of course, if \ when Apple release an iPad with even more storage, you could probably do away with streaming altogether.
