Qantas Streaming trial

Not something I am very interested in - it would be interesting if they could stream to my personal iPad though...

It did say that may happen towards the end of the trial.

I love the concept that QF will be "locking down" the iPads so they are of no use to anyone who decides to, ahem, borrow them. I do wonder if they have told the teenagers who'll unlock them in about 0.8 seconds? :?::D

Maybe they will get a very big bag and come and collect them at the end of the flight

Couple it with onboard wifi and they can go straight to jailbreakme.com ;)

The problem I see is iPad's are not exactly exclusively aviation, infact anyone who has aspare $599 can get one themselves. Thus I can forsee a few either being borrowed or an FA demanding that the pax give back an iPad which is actually owned by the pax.

I can however see an iPad rental service on the ground work nicely. Basically a pax rents out an iPad on the ground, and then they return it to a similar shop on arrival at the destination airport. The shop (which could be a free service as it's replacing former IFE systems) would take a credit card swiping, and if the iPad is not returned at the destination airport then the credit card is charged.

That said, I really do prefer to use in seat IFE systems if one is available. Using an iPad during a meal service can be tricky, and it does start to hurt my neck looking down at the tray table for extended periods (as I usually use the little stand the iPad has on the back)

I agree,I'd rathe built in IFE but it seems a preety clever way to get around being stuck with 767s for the forseeable future.
also scope down the track for regionals on 717s as a cheap retrofit option. With new 738s coming with inseat this seems like a good stopgap measure

Seeing as though I travel on the 717's very reg I would luuuuuurrrrvvveee it on them, and to personal iPads":D

they could supply something allowing you to hook it over the seat in front.

As for theft - it's not hard to keep track of seat numbers and serial numbers. You can also put tamper proof ID stickers on them.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

I'd think the fact it's bound To be a 16GB Wifi only one would suffice as a sufficient deterrent. :)

Well, there's always Find my iPad, and there's no reason why the iPads couldn't be locked or embedded in a case both for identification and to prevented unauthorised modifications to the software.

Putting aside the specific platform and addressing security issues, I don't see many reasons why slim tablets wouldn't be an effective means to deploy IFE on older aircraft without refitting a fixed system that is less flexible or upgradable.

What happened to Jetstars iPads??

I presume the dreams of a 20-something "expert" and the harsh reality of "this is how we implement it" never met.

Some would blame this on IT, I blame it on Apple.

(Actually, no real idea, I heard it was delayed, then delayed again and they were working in partnership with a media company. Don't believe it has been released ... yet)

I was speaking to someone from Thales a few weeks back and they said they're conducting trials of wifi based ife systems that push content to devices. Seems like it's the future for ife

I wonder if VA will follow this move with iPads for their mysterious IFE solution?

Speak to people who know WiFI and also know about the very much crippled IPad implementation of wireless N and you would suspect this trial is ill fated to a certain point!
