Joyce: "We only have 18% market share. Eighty-two per cent of travellers travel on another airline".

Including 9% on jetstar. Hope one of those idiots ask what the percentage would be if qantas didn't create jetstar and give them qantas routes.

Sterle is querying why the website continued to sell tickets after the grounding. He's got a bit heated on it. Brett Johnson from QF said "to be honest, no one thought about it" but by 8pm it was shutdown.

Joyce also clarified the engagement of printers for the notice to staff. He said printers were only engaged on the Saturday with explicit instructions that nothing be actually printed until 5pm.

Sterle has asked Joyce to take on notice how many tickets were sold, how many people were affected and how it will be remedied. Joyce said QF has been in conversation with ACCC and QF will meet their requirements. Sterle's not a happy man (but he's a trucky and a former union guy, I think).

Abetz: referring to Joyce's statement that forward bookings had collapsed and requested information, if possible, to what extent. Joyce said that information can be provided. He said monthly surveys showed that the number of people who said that would not consider flying QF "had risen to 30%".

At "only" 9,700 km, the ORIGINAL 777-200 did not have the range.

The 777-200ER could go 4,605 km further to 14,305 km.

SYD-LAX is 12,051 km.

Yeh the original didn't

777-200LR - Been available since early 2006
777-300ER - Been available since early 2004

The 787-9 which is the one that matters was never going to be available until 2013..

Qantas could have had 10 years of use out of the 777-300ERs

All this is not relevant though as it's clear Qantas has no interest in longhaul with Qantas "mainline" aircraft OR crew

It's already been noted the decision re the 777 was made well before the current CEO and board. The choice was the A380

Abetz referring to claims that JQ denied overseas flight crew contracts do not include the same duty limitations as Australian contracts. Buchanan has backed this claim.

Abetz asking whether, in the phone calls to government on Saturday afternoon, if the government asked for further time, "can you hold off?" Joyce said no but "to be fair" we had made a decision to ground the airline.

It's clear from Joyce's evidence that the reason no warning of the grounding was given was because of concerns relating to safety. Abetz asked if safety was the only reason for the grounding and Joyce said yes. However, it has just been clarified. The reason for the grounding was safety concerns resulting from the decision to lockout.

The committee has asked Qantas to continue giving evidence, beyond its 10.30am timeframe. Joyce said they can accommodate - however, Joyce has asked if it can be done in 20 minutes because "I have to catch a flight". (To be fair, he said he can change it, but he has other commitments.)

Tell me where A380's fit into the Asia expansion?

Once again, to make it simple...

AJ is worried that Qantas only has a small market share of people flying INTO Asia from Australia.....

Deferring the best equipment, A380's, is surely going to help that

Tell me where the A320's fits into getting more people flying to/from Asia and Australia.

Great, the world's worst speaker Bob Brown is on.. Good to see he was told off by another Senator!

Why take on more equipment if the traffic isn't there yet?. Note they haven't cancelled the order.

The A320's will feed to/from the Asian hub. Pretty simple hey?

Yes I am sure many people will want to fly an A320 from Darwin when they can fly an A380 on Emirates or Singapore or a 777/A330 on any other airline

Qantas firmed the original ordered the first 12 388's in March 2001 with options for another 12.

In December 2006, Qantas firmed from their options another 8.

By that time the 787 had been ordered (December 2005).

What does the A380 have to do with this ?

787's were not due until 2012/2013 at any time from memory

Did I mention Darwin? No. It's already been stated the hub would be in Asia. I.e. it would feed into Asia, then hub back to Australia.
