Qantas Revenue booking cancellations (under covid19)

Has anyone managed to cancel their bookings now that Qantas had allowed cancellations until 31 March (for which you receive travel credit)

The site says you can do it through MYB but none of my flights have a cancel option and I don't want to be calling them.

Yep and managed to get a full refund

Go to “manage” on your flight in the Qantas app after login. Then it will direct you to the desktop version of qantas website.

You will then have the option to cancel. The window will display “voucher or refund” tabs to select.

When you choose “voucher”, Qantas T&C’s will appear. The credit is only valid for 12months from “time of ticket purchase”

I successfully redeemed our return flights to NZ in April/May yesterday.

I suggest you take a picture of the T&C’s before agreeing to have a credit voucher issued as it states that Qantas will waive the “change fees” when you use the voucher.

The recent Qantas offers of credit vouchers to cancel flights. Do we have to pay change fees when we use the credit vouvhers to re-book our flights?

No change fees for voucher use. Qantas State it in their T&C’s before you “agree to them”.

To be honest I couldn't be bothered reading 141 posts to check this but I'm certain someone else would have asked this question.

I have OWA trip commencing on 26 May and booked many months ago which I strongly suspect won't be happening - especially since the "Do Not Travel" advice from this morning. If we did go our travel insurance wouldn't cover us so that alone decides it.

My question is:
If I cancel the whole trip am I up for 6000 points cancellation fee per passenger?

The Qantas website and media releases are really vague on this - they mention the change fee being waived but nothing about the cancel fee.
Can someone point me to a post where this has been answered or has Qantas not clearly advised yet?

I was puzzled by the announcement, as back in mid February, I decided to cancel my March trip to the US. I go most years to ski and buy jewellery supplies in Utah.

Went to My Bookings, and hit the "cancel" option, then it gave me the option of taking a credit voucher, so I did that with some satisfaction. Only rub is, since I booked the trip last August, I have to spend this voucher before that August deadline. Figured they'd have a sale at some point before then.

I cancelled because the pandemic danger was starting to nudge my brain, people thought I was being crazy but I was involved in the original pandemic planning back in 2005, and the scary nature of that has never left me. Plus the Aus dollar was making the trip unusually expensive, but the prospect of borders closing with me in the US was the main worry. So glad I took that decision.

I haven’t yet but will be in next few days just holding on to the last minute... anyone else?
I have two flights before May 31 and both offer the cancel/voucher optoim. Later flights do not have that though.
I wouldn't bother calling at the moment as they simply direct you to the website unless you are wanting to change flights due to leave in the next 2 days!

Everything I've read says the cancel fee still applies. And applies to each ticketed person apparently.

That's always a good idea but never more so than now.

So it seems if i cancel my 3 classic reward booking for domestic travel during May and June then i will still be charged the 6000 points per classic award booking.
Cancellation Conditions
  • The cancellation conditions of the original booking apply. Refer to the fare conditions for details.
  • If there are two different fare types in the booking, the more restrictive fare conditions apply.
  • If the original booking permits a refund, the value less all applicable fees, will be refunded to the original form of payment used.
  • Cancellation of Classic Flight Reward Bookings will incur a fee of 6,000 points per passenger.
  • Classic Flight Reward booking points, taxes, levies and surcharges will be refunded within 10 business days.
  • Cancellation applies to all passengers in the booking.
  • Cancellations made due to a Qantas disruption may entitle you to a refund of the unused portion of the fare and taxes.
  • Cancelations for partially travelled itineraries will require a re-assessment of travelled flights to determine the applicable refund value.
  • If a car is included in your booking, your car reservation will be cancelled. Car reservations can be made at qantas.com/cars.
  • If Qantas Travel Insurance is included in your booking, your insurance policy won’t be automatically updated with your amended travel details. Update your insurance policy with your new travel details at qantas.com/insurance.

I would expect in your case a voucher issued would entail receiving your rewards points back without cancellation fees? If there is no option for you to cancel with a voucher, I would try and contact qantas through website chat to clarify refund of your points upon cancellation.
I doubt they would issue vouchers to paid fares, yet charge you points to cancel.

I think “change” and “cancel” are not the same thing. If passengers actually cancel their paid flights, they also have to pay the $400pp or whatever is applicable to do so. The credit voucher basically enables you to change your flight to another date. Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a similar no-charge option for reward or points flights (but I haven’t tried yet to cancel a reward booking).

On another thread, the poster said the 6000 points were returned to her account a few days after she cancelled the reward booking. Good news.

Yep and managed to get a full refund

Did you manage to get a refund online or have to call . Please advise how you achieved the refund

worried if I request refund via manage booking I’ll be up for $800 x 2 as per T&C’s

now at level 4 no travel wanting the full refund

cheers

Yes, the voucher is essentially a way to re-book the flight, only on this case minus the “change fee” which usually occurs when redeeming a voucher.

I would be onto Qantas if you cannot redeem your reward points for a re-booking voucher upon cancellation. If you cancel you have to pay. If you cancel for a re-booking voucher you don’t pay the “change fee”. If your reading-booked flight/s using your voucher is greater than the original cost, of course you pay the difference, and you have to pay credit card fees again on the re-booked flight.
