SYD-BNE is now $146. It has been creeping up slowly.

I won't purchase at that price. Simple.

But in saying that all my flights this year have been at $85, $89 and the 2 returns in July school holidays at $95. Missing October, November and December so will be interested to see how low these airfares go.

There's a two week sale now on as already mentioned whet MEL/SYD is at $95.

As a comparison, MEL/BNE is $129 "on sale" - travel I booked for that route earlier this year when on sale was $119.

Wow what a surprise, price have risen as supply starts to dry up and both airlines want to actually make some money

The MEL-CBR-MEL route is nice and creamy for QF, last year or the year prior, sale fares were $89/$99 now $129

Standard fares were $119/$129 and now $169, that's a far larger % increase than the MEL-SYD-MEL route and most other routes, if not all other domestic routes

But no surprise at all, that prices have risen, they were always going to

Oh and VA has done it as well and I expect further increases from both airlines over the next 12-18 months

The Big Break Sale has SYD-BNE at $95

got my popcorn...as people post the fluctuations in prices on airline websites (ie..supply/demand ).... think I gotta buy more popcorn...good for a laugh :D

What is most annoying is that QF would still consider this as a 'discount economy' fare when in real terms there is nothing 'discount' about it!
If we are paying that high of a fare, I want full economy SC's, like thats gonna happen!

It's the cheapest Y fare, Flexi Saver is around $325 and Fully Flexible is $559 so it's not even close, however a $95 sale fare earns the same SC/points as a $145 red-e-deal.....

The VA way of allocating points is much more fair way, as it's a simply x points per $ spent, you spend the $ you get the points, not a convoluted fare class calculation required

wow if you think $145 should earn Y SC's then what should my $400 one way airfare earn??

It was more a tongue in cheek dig at the use of the word of 'discount' and QF's recent 'simpler/fairer' changes based on the amount you have paid..

So $95 is not a discount on a normal Y fare then.......................

as far a I can see...'red e deals' are not (and were never) promoted as 'sale' fares...they just inform us of fares.... and when a 'sale' comes online..you wont see them advertised as 'red e deals' .... there's a distinction..to me at least!!

Anyone able to access a fare breakdown?

QF (or DJ) only get a % of that fare with fees to the airports and taxes at both ends......

If you plug some of the numbers into RBA's inflation calculator, you get $100 ($145 today)in 2001 for SYD-MEL and $205 ($300 today) for PER-SYD. From memory, $100 MEL-SYD used to be the standard non-sale red e-deal as did around $400 return between east coast and perth back then. Admittedly competitive landscape has changed a bit, but so has the cost of aviation fuel! But still, don't think the prices today are that unreasonable, given they are base (non sale) fares. There's always Jetstar and Tiger ;)

I have seen a standard red e-deal SYD-BNE in the past 6 years go from $128 to $133 (not sure if it touched $138) before dropping to ~$95 in 2010/2011. Now it is $146.

I cannot justify spending that much on a weekly airfare. Luckily most weeks are on sale and when they are not on sale then OOL comes into play with lower standard red e-deals.

I assume if that's weekly then it's for work, then price shouldn't be an issue (within reason)

If it's personal then that's your choice

It's personal work. My pockets are not deep enough and have holes in them. :p

Just before the AJ half-year report in February 2014, SYD-MEL "cheap" fares on the QF website were between $145 and $179 each way (excluding the 6.00AM and JQ flights).

Think more $145 as discount economy to $95, that is the joke I can see.

On domestic fares, as this thread is about, Sale fares are red-e-deals. Unlike international, on domestic the sale fares are advertised as red-e-deals. (has been the case for as long as I remember)

JohnK has posted before that, due to some advice he has received, he does not claim any of his weekly travel as a tax deduction.

I have tried to enlighten him that he might legally be able to claim at least some of it - to no avail.
