Qantas Project Sunrise goes ahead, 12 new A350-1000s ordered

They could do a midday departure from London arriving into Sydney early evening.

But Qantas seem to avoid having any evening long-haul arrivals into Sydney.

So for a quick turnaround they might go with a 5am landing at LHR, then around 8am departure for LHR-SYD which would get to SYD around 2-3pm?

I suspect they’ll go with something like
SYD 6pm - LHR 5am
LHR 8am - SYD 2pm

They’ll want to get into Sydney as early afternoon as possible to allow for some domestic connections.

That gives them a bit more flexibility than the other option avoiding the aircraft staying on the ground overnight which would be something like
SYD 8am - LHR 7pm
LHR midnight - SYD 5am
which I can’t see them going for

I was never going to be a huge fan of non-stop @20/30% premium, but QF have made the decision for me by not offering non stop flights from Melbourne. They really hold us in contempt. Transferring through Sydney is diabolical, Perth not much better. Typical Qantas 10 years of marketing huff and puff, and failure to deliver. Take note everyone, from here on in we shall refer to this as Project Sydney Sunrise!

If I have to stop anyway to LHR it may as well be somewhere like SIN unless that’s more expensive than going via SYD or PER. I can’t see stopping in SIN being more expensive than stopping in SYD/PER to connect to the direct flight to LHR.

Hmmm… those folk in MEL would be better off flying SQ F with one stop than taking QF via SYD? I can’t see MEL being left out of this loop in terms of people willing to pay to fill premium cabins?

MEL-SIN-LHR isn't going anywhere (unless someone else has news)

What about one stop via PER?
I would be very surprised if the Sunrise aircraft or even the 787 was used for a MEL-PER connection. Probably only domestic connections on domestic aircraft. Would not fancy the chance of a recliner PER-MEL after lie flat LHR-PER if paying for revenue J.

MEL-SIN on the A330 for that leg is not the best connection to SIN-LHR. No PE and No F on the A330.

I’ve done that before and it’s actually the best option to reduce jet lag. QF10 from London and then a 737 on to MEL arriving in the evening. With the timing you actually do want the recliner on PER-MEL because you shouldn’t be sleeping on that flight unless you like jet lag.

The interesting takeaway here is that they’ve effectively split the 12 aircraft into two categories: six allocated to “new ULH PTP routes” (e.g. SYD–LHR, SYD–JFK) and six allocated to “network diversification” (i.e. replacing 787-9s on existing routes and allowing those aircraft to be redeployed elsewhere). I appreciate the actual airframes will rotate between both roles as required.

Most people had assumed all 12 aircraft were destined for the ULH point-to-point network, potentially including future MEL services.

That raises a couple of questions. They must have modelled this strategy when placing the order, but at what point did it become the preferred outcome? And if around half the fleet is effectively being used on existing routes, did they really need to order the full complement of higher-cost ULR aircraft?

Perhaps the answer lies in the claimed 25% increase in freight capacity, combined with the higher premium cabin mix. But is that enough to justify the ULR premium on routes that don’t actually require the additional range? Could the same outcome have been achieved with a standard A35K and premium heavy config?

If QF did use the A350 on the QF9/10 then wonder if there would be an overlap with the Sydney flights into London to rotate the aircraft, or whether they'll send them between Perth and the east coast.

Equally, re schedules out of LHR, I can see them wanting it to be as late in the AM as possible before departing to try and line up with connections from UK/EU. If LHR-SYD leaves before 1000 it won't be possible to facilitate any connections.

Yeah - that LHR becomes the station where they change the airframes.
Hopefully if F is destined for PER, then QF will look at a F lounge in the new PER redevelopment

I couldn’t help but laugh at this line in the ET article: “She [Hudson] also confirmed that Qantas Points could be used to snare a Classic Reward seat in every cabin, including first class”

Don’t fancy my chances of getting return J/F Classic Reward seats on Sunrise flights at Christmas time which is a points seats blackout period, maybe not at any time of the year even with WP to be able to request a points seat release.
