Qantas petition to open state borders

That is your opinion I suppose and you are MORE than free to think that :)

That's not my opinion, that's from the polls, clearly including LNP internal polls, and I have quoted the source, I didn't make this up as a personal opinion.

No not at all a useless campaign by Virgin et al or a useless petition - because its a lot more than just winning the next state QLD election, it is much bigger than that, that is just the target right now.

I thought those marketing campaigns are being done to pressure the QLD government to allow free travel?

Also, Bill Gates did say this. You could open the economy up fully, but if people are scared, then they would not travel / spend regardless. I can see that many people are even too scared to go out to restaurants. Just look at how restaurants used to have queues, but not anymore nowadays.

If people hold a fear of the virus, that they won't even eat at a restaurant or Chinatown, how could you make them fly on a plane?

How much to put up a single webpage and send out an email campaign, Absolute peanuts. Value in free advertising, media attention - millions.

Not all free publicity is good publicity.

Look at the banks, how many marketing plans have been backfired?

If people have a fear of the virus, and you push people to open, then you just become public enemy. Just look at LNP leader in QLD:

"Since then, the LNP leader hasn't called a single media conference on the border issue, a seemingly tacit admission that public opinion was not on her side."

So don't these companies just risk turning themselves into public enemy number 1?

How do you co-relate that to a joy flight selling out at inflated prices in less than 10 minutes with many disgruntled customers because they couldn't get a seat.

Unfortunately you are viewing the world through your personal set of blinkers.

You have decided its not for you. That's fine, everyone makes their own choices however not seeing the variety of the real world views can do you a disservice.

You are talking about a very small number of people here, over the whole scheme of things.

For what it is worth, if EVA were to fly their Sanrio to Australia for a joy fly, it is very likely that I would get on it too. (I have always wanted to fly those planes!)

If you say so, but I have quoted all the scientific sources where I get my reading of the current situation, but I cannot see anyone quoting any other latest opinion poll or scientific source. I would like to see other data, like how people in NSW and VIC see border closures.

Actually here is another one: Victorians in strong support of most Stage 4 restrictions - Roy Morgan 2020-08-27

You obviously don't work in marketing.

So if you work in marketing, could you shed some light on, how could you make Victorians want to change their mind? I mean, they have been in prison for 4 weeks, and they actually want to extend their prison terms! How strange is this? How would you spin this? I genuine would like to know, because I would expect these people to be dying to get out.

....and the 50,000 or more people lobbying the government to allow them to get on a plane and fly into Australia?

...the reports of full flights between states every day and airlines able to charge outlandish fares because of the current restrictions?

...constant clamouring for the feds to lift their restrictions on people wanting to fly overseas, more than 90,000 applications to go overseas being processed by the home affairs dept up to end July?

...the tens of thousands that have bought fares to fly out in the next 2-3 months that are now being forced to apply for refunds?

[ BTW: A Roy Morgan opinion poll is not a scientific study]

Please stick top the thread topic. Discussion here is regarding the Qantas partition for reopening borders.

I actually think the fare was fair! Not inflated.

But I can’t see any links between the joy flight selling out and public demand for borders to be open. Folks fly to Antarctica when the borders are open, so no correlation can be drawn.

Antarctica is totally irrelevant, it has to be a "joy" return flight as there is nowhere to land or layover for passengers. The is no destination as such.

I see the joy flight and the QF petition being deliberate twin strategies by the company that will build over the coming period.

The petition was either by chance or exquisite timing applying pressure nationally at the very moment the national cabinet had agenda items to discuss opening borders both from the view point of interstate travel and international caps. (Would not be surprised if QF had been tipped off in advance of the agenda.)

The petition also came just at the time the war of words between NSW and QLD reached new highs and would be intent on leveraging that heat.

The joy flight and the engineered blindingly fast sellout was to prove that there is latent demand to fly anywhere from SYD that is currently prevented (unencumbered) by border restrictions to most state and territories.

In addition, the flight path was carefully crafted to cover many sites not in NSW that NSW residents cannot visit without a high impost and highlight interstate desired tourist spots. Typical joy flights are 1-3 hours and don't go very far afield. AKA the recent 747 farewell flights

YMMV

For me a 14 hour flight to see ice holds no appeal, but 7 hours to see the great barrier reef and the red centre actually doesn't seem too bad, It's the same product, just a different market to cater to different interests.

It makes little sense that people are forking out $787-$3500 just to make a point to the government about border closures.

I heard someone on the radio today describing their Antarctica flight. I'm a little bit interested.

For sure! For those that are interested in Antarctica! The comment being made however was that the 7-hour scenic flight is somehow a 'protest to the borders' - whereas we know these joy flights already existed, and were well subscribed, even without border closures.

If QF is trying to show border closures are having an economic impact, the fact they can sell out a flight to nowhere in 10 minutes at between $800 and $3500 shows there's a lot of money, and consumer confidence.

I doubt many or any passenger bought a ticket to make a point about anything.

I was suggestioning that QF deliberately designed the flight to make a point that there is suppressed demand by a proportion of the population to get back in the air but are being inhibited by border issues.

The quick take up of the seats also shows that there is a cohort of people who are definitely not afraid to get back in the air as alluded to by another poster.

Possibly. Or... just like the antarctica flights, there are 150 people that *want* to take a scenic trip over the great barrier reef and Kadadu/Uluru. This trip may have sold out in 10 minutes if the borders had been wide open. We don't know. (QF could have designed the offer differently if they were wanting to prove suppressed demand.)

Exactly at least you understand PR and advocacy :) It was brilliantly executed and perfectly timed. That and the VA CEO’s lashing of Anna again, one would even think they are working together ;)

When I checked a few days ago, the Antarctica Flights for 2020/21 were either a sellout or had only a few seats still available.
Part of this is because of use of the smaller 787 compared with the 747 used previously.

One thing about the Antarctica flights is that they are a charter flight - with someone else taking some of the financial risk. So a bit different to something Qantas runs of its own bat,

The 2021/2022 flights are starting to go on sale. Perth and Adelaide each have a flight in Nov 2021.

^^^ I appreciate the difference. But for both types of flights the departure airport is also the arrival airport.
That point A to point A scenic flights are in demand in late 2020 suggests something, but I doubt it has much to do with interstate travel restrictions.

I am not too sure if this is the appropriate thread to continue this type of discussion (maybe here: A seven-hour scenic flight around Australia ?).

They have released one for SA in November 2021 I saw yesterday. I cant stump for J fare and think the Y seat would just be frustrating.

My thinking is still that AJ and Scurrah should ground the lot and force the issue. No freight. No medical isotopes.

Really? REALLY?!
seriously do you think people should NOT get their cancer treatments? Do you think it's acceptable to risk people dying?

Maybe this is a bit sore for me right now, having a loved one pass away 3 weeks ago.
