Qantas petition to open state borders

If the borders stay closed we will be bailing out QF with taxpayer funds. Or losing the strategic capability which comes from having an Australian flagged airline with significant international lift.

My thinking is still that AJ and Scurrah should ground the lot and force the issue. No freight. No medical isotopes. No state politicians going to state parliaments and most importantly NO FIFO. Let’s see how long it takes before a national state of emergency is declared.
FIFO is gross stupidity under the circumstances, and shoud have been suspended six or more months ago.

How is the petition going? Has QF said how many have signed up?

Didn’t seem to be an issue in 2012?

Massive difference between attempting to get what you want from your employees' unions and directly shafting your customers, and your customer's employees ( Many of whom actually DO pay for their own ticket - I was one ) to make a point ( Self-interested as it may be ) don't you think?

Many FIFO operations have already altered rosters to adjust. Many employees are stranded away from family. They're not enjoying it but they're still employed and still helping out their country and their employer.

MONSTROUS PR disaster for any airline that tried anything like what you're suggesting.
And for what reason? Just so we're not inconvenienced?

I'd rather a good proportion of businesses plug away without Victorian style lockdowns thanks, than revert back to massive unemployment again. A good outbreak of COVID will head whichever State right back there.

I'm here to tell you mate that the rate of unemployment in Townsville when the first hard lockdown hit was MASSIVE. And I'm sure we weren't unique.

Our Taxpayer bucket of money that the Govt hands back to those struggling is not limitless, nor does it refill if no-one's working.

Hit 40,000 signatories yesterday

More than 40,000 people have now signed Qantas’ petition urging states to open their borders ahead of a crucial national cabinet meeting on the topic.

Yikes. Not looking promising for the airlines in being able to demonstrate demand :( Not even 1% of QF’s FF membership base has signed.

I will not be signing this petition. I think this is a PR stunt, which disregard public health, and actually put businesses at risk.

Look at Melbourn, opened up, back to lock down. This is devastating for businesses, and devastating for people psychologically. This is why Australians have always been against dobbing people in, except during this virus, where everyone is now dobbing everyone in, showing how damaging this is to people mentally.

The AMA supports border lock down. The general scientific consensus is having a lock down is better than not having one.

I wiped my arm rests and tray table with wipes, didnt eat/dribk on the flight and felt quite safe.

That truck driver who drove his workmate from Melbourne to Sydney and stopped at Crossroad Hotel felt quite safe about that trip too.

All the people who ate at Crossroad Hotel felt quite safe too, that's why they ate there.

All the people who ate Thai in Sydney would have felt safe too, that's why they ate there.

Didn't end well, did it?

Feeling safe is so subjective that it is meaningless in the current situation.

I would rather Qantas saves money, puts people on Job Keeper, and asks government for an underwriting with my tax money, than doing this sort of PR stunt.

It's interesting hot headlines are worded to evoke emotion. Image if the headline was "Less than 50,000 people have signed Qantas position". "Less than" v "more than".

I agree. Given the pandemic is impacting the lives of what must be something like 97% of the population, I would think the petition would need at least one million signatures to even be considered for National Cabinet agenda.

I am not usually a poster on any forums, but feel strongly about this one. Will be unsubscribing from Qantas emails, and any remaining tenuous emotional attachment to QF is dead.
I am a Perth resident, have read the findings in the Federal Court about justification for closures, and wholeheartedly support WA's position. I'm sorry that anyone, including Qantas, is suffering financial hardship, but these closures and the all-but Covid free status here have been great for innumerable businesses, from the corner cafe up to the miners that are shoring up what is left of our economy. And while I would love to travel, and to see relatives interstate it is wonderful that family members with conditions that make them vulnerable can live normal lives here.
This is an ambiguously worded petition, but its obvious intent is to push faster opening than many consider appropriate. No-one has ever suggested borders should not re-open when it is "safe" to do so

WELCOME!

You should also remove yourself from Virgin communications and kill any emotional connection there too because they are shoveling money into a public awareness campaign alongside Flight Centre, HelloWorld and QF to push to safely open borders, targeting QLD right now. The Virgin CEO has been equally scathing of the haphazard approach to border closures.

You might have to fly Rex :)
