last week travelling thru SYD one of the QC staffers said it would happen in Oct.(been delayed a couple of times).perhaps his is a "soft launch" to make sure there are no bugs...either way good stuff and 'bout time..also told you will no longer have to be a QC member to get on dep Dom upgrades using points, they will be avail at all kiosks
either way anything that saves lining up when your just doing a MEL day return is a bonus...I'm off to MEL next week hope to give it a try then

I did notice yesterday flying MEL- ADL return that the BP readers at both airports are now equipped with barcode scanners, which is obviosuly for the OLCI and printed BP's
First noticed these in ADL back in June; since then most Domestic Gates I have boarded at had these.

I guess they were ready for the original planned date of August.

Thats good news, i don't always have time to get to the QF club, really happy QF are putting some improvements through. Wonder if online check in will roll out for JQ as well, I think their 'choose your own seat when you book' will be a big winner as well, their boarding proceedure was one of my pet hates, now (well from Oct 29) it will be good, and with OLCI even better!

OK I online checked on for my QF flight last night from SYD-MEL. Went into account, followed the process and printed my boarding pass out....
Haven't had the opportunity to use it yet but I am guessing that you can check-in online and not have to print a boarding pass.

Yes. You will need to go to the baggage drop to get one.

My home printed boarding pass did not work at Gate 23 in Melbourne (QF400 MEL-SYD) this morning, but still have this afternoon's pass and the Qantas staff who kindly re-printed a normal bording pass encouraged me to try again in Sydney with my original, and thanked me for using the new service.

BTW: The seat map I saw at checkin exactly matched the window configuration around seats 27 and 28, which is slightly different on different aircraft.

Yes but why bother?? Would still have to get one upon arrival at airport, and if you have to do that it would be easier & quicker just to do quickcheck.

My home printed boarding pass SYD-MEL did not work this-afternoon either.
Has anybody's home printed boarding pass worked from Melbourne or Sydney yet?

Depends - if you wanted a specific seat you might use OLCI to secure it

I'm jetting down to Melbourne for a couple of hours on Friday - looking forward to checking it out, seeing what seats are available to select etc!

What happens with automated seat allocations? If seats are being assigned overnight before a flight leaves, then what happens if a person tries to check in T-23:59 ? What seats would they see? Any different for a NB / PS / SG / WP etc?

To try and secure a better seat up to 24 hours prior to check-in at airport. Plus I collect boarding passes and the ones issued at airport are a lot better than something printed on A4 paper on my $29 printer at home.

I've just used OLCI for my PER-SYD flight tomorrow.

I have a suspicion that my BP won't scan properly either. I am in a hotel in Fremantle and could not print the BP, so I saved the PDF file and will print it out at the office I am in tomorrow. The reason I think it won't work is that the barcode does not look right onscreen - it looks kind of smudgy. Unless there is a new style of barcode then I'm guessing there will be a problem.

Anyway, aside from that the system is easy to use. When I checked in, the screen showed me as pre-allocated to a window seat in row 29 (on an A332) and I was able to move myself to 26B without any problem. A lot of the forward ecomomy seats were already greyed out (unavailable) on the seat plan but my BP shows that I am seq nbr 3, so I guess they must be blocking seats off.

I'll post an update as to whether the barcode scanned OK or not on Friday.

So if you use an online checkin boarding pass, and it fails at the gate, what happens? Are they able to reprint you a boarding pass at the gate and get you on board with a minimum of fuss?

I tried to use my home printed passes twice yesterday MEL & SYD with no success. In MEL, they printed another pass at cityflyer counter but in SYD (already very busy due to GF in MEL) they just keyed in my seat number.

This morning it worked. :D The difference appeared to be the way it was scanned. The staff member this morning placed my boarding pass on the scanner, with the bar-code over the bar-code sticker that is affixed to the scanner.

No sooner had she placed the pass in that position... it BEEPed ... and I was free to proceed. Yesterday, the staff waived the pass under the red light, waived it around a few times, and finally gave up. (This mornings successful staff member mentioned that she actually read the instructions that were sent to her, in preparation for OLCI.)

LOL, the old RTFM ;)

When I went to the bag drop counter here in PER the agent said she was surprised by how many people had cottoned onto the OLCI even though it had not been announced or officially lauched.

I asked if the barcode was unlikely to work given that it didn't look like a regular barcode, and she said that they all looked like that so it should be fine.

I'm sitting in the PER QP right now sweating on an ODU. The QP counter guy said it was looking good but I have to report back later. :-|

BTW, the security checkpoint person remarked that they had processed in excess of 7,000 people today. Are there that many flights because of the GF?

Well, I won't be trying out my OLCI BP now...

I've just been issued with a new BP for seat 1K. Thank you Qantas! My UC's actually had some value after all. Shame I drove the airport yesterday. Will have to curb my wine consumption on board :D

There are double the normal QF (and JQ) flights to MEL today, although QF1214 seems to have had a false start this morning:

QF1214Melbourne 00:50 01:22 Routed via Perth QF1214Melbourne 00:50 03:11 Departed

The QP is literally overflowing. No empty seats, people standing up to eat, and there are two lines at the bar each 6 people deep. Football madness.

It was reported that Qantas had put on enough planes for 3000 extra seats over Thurs/Friday. Considering that there were no specials, that is not bad money as a friend said they were paying $800 for the flight on the extra services. Will keep the shareholders happy.
