Qantas Link 717s to get J class and fly to CBR

Let's all be clear about what this Hobart announcement means -

[QF spin off]
Qantas mainline is pulling out of Hobart.

All services to/from HBA are to be operated by regional carrier QantasLink.
[/QF spin off]

This has implications for the QP lounge, if HBA is no longer a mainline port, then the lounge is likely to be downgraded to a "Regional Lounge" level of amenity and service.

Whether by accident or design its a variation on the current QF Group strategy coupled with B767 and B734 retirement leading to more B738 services throughout the domestic network, those B738s have got to come from somewhere and it seems that CRB and HBA services are where they have chosen. By cutting capacity on HBA-MEL and HBA-SYD that increases yield and reduces costs for QF mainline, this may result in higher airfares, but leaves VA a bit stuck, as VA would also want to increase fares and yield on the VA HBA services, but they prevented from increasing yield too much as the low JQ fares will still keep an effecive "cap" on VA yields. Not just limited to HBA either.

This is why VA need to do something about their own products (including lounges) and services and have a good look at exactly what they are going to do with TT in the future...

The QF announcement said 'QantasLink operated by Cobham' ??

The lounge in HBA is already at 'regional' level of service and amenity (shudder).

Tell me a Bit about Cobham and why QantasLink doesn't operate the service itself, and it'll be less confusing for me :)

Seems they are recruiting Cabin Crew at present.. to be based in .. CBR!
Also appears opportunities exist for experienced 717 line Pilots.

Interesting..

It is a wet lease. Cobham already operate the 717's for QFlink currently, so it wouldn't be any different to that.

Pedantically I suppose I should say that my flight tomorrow is "QantasLink operated by Sunstate" as QantasLink doesn't actually operate any flight itself.

Although most people just say QantasLink, irrespective of which contractor is operating the regional service.

Same for Trans Trasman, "Qantas operated by Jetconnect", but most people just say Qantas when they fly to New Zealand.

OK, I get it now. My best research is done here at AFF :)

The HBA 717s are to have FAs and pilots based in HBA, according to the QF announcement.

Actually, I did, before I posted . It told me about Cobham being a aero leasing company, out of Adelaide. It didn't tell me about its particular relationship with Qantas Link or the arrangements with these HBA 717s.

Like I said, some of my best research is on AFF where others kindly share their greater knowledge, with much better context than Google. I guess the answer given to many queries on AFF could be "Just Google it." - but it would make for a less interesting AFF wouldn't it?

Cobham are actually a very large aerospace company based in the UK:

Cobham plc :: Global Locations

They bought out National Jet Systems which is the Qantas Link operator.

Cobham is probably still better known under their former name of 'National Jet Systems', so if you look for info under that name you might uncover other bits and pieces of interest.

In the early '00s they bought a BAe 146 freighter up to Mareeba from Cairns as a static display at an airshow. Some bright spark pitched a marquee on the dirt directly behind it - myself and a few other friends scored the task of holding down the marquee as the aircraft started and taxiied for departure.
