Qantas & Jetstar revealed as first airlines to fly from WSI

plus the added excitement of a late night train ride though Sydney’s western suburbs!
I've ridden the late nights in Sydney CBD, inner city. It's a dodgy / exciting as it gets.

I guess what WSI offers various carriers over SYD is curfew-free operations.
And maybe a diversion or three for some unable to beat the curfew at SYD. How would those Eastern Suburbs passengers cope?🤣 Don't worry QF will organise a bus🤣.

I am from the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney and I have to admit I'm worrying about 'coping'. Of course I would resent going to WSI compared to SYD, especially if just for a domestic flight.

I do admit that if it does overtake SYD then I'll have no choice, so I hope it becomes to Sydney what Gatwick is to London, serving as an alternative airport but not the main one.

I wouldn't mind WSI though if there was hypothetically a WSI train that took you straight to the CBD in 15-30 minutes as opposed to going via St Marys which would take at least 75 minutes unless the entire line to St Marys became a Metro too. KLIA is 60km from downtown Kuala Lumpur but the airport train is very fast and decent.

I think you are alluding to another missed opportunity by our planners. Why not have the new Sydney International Airport at Darling Harbour? They did it in the past, it'll be close to the CBD and would provide travellers with breath taking views of the city similar to Kai Tak.

Wasn’t it originally at Rose Bay (other end of harbour)?

A helicopter transfer would be fun - but perhaps not a typical requirement for a JQ arrival to WSI…..

Yep it was Rose Bay there was never an airport at Darling Harbour - pre redevelopment DH was all run down warehouses and wharves.

I don't get the feeling it will ever be the main / premium airport for Sydney, even if it ends up with the most take offs and landings. Even if it does become the preferred choice, it would only be - like you say - if they can create a comfortable, fast & frequent transfer to the city and other key connection points. Don't expect there to be a QF Dom J or int F lounge there in the next decade. A moderately sized Dom Qantas Club, maybe.

Cheers.
Matt.

and the half built western distributer….

This will be a case like HND and NRT if not all airlines move to WSI Airport.
So troublesome if your flight comes into HND/NRT and out the other airport.
If KSA only became a goods/freight airport, not so bad, ie, if all pax airlines move, all good, but if some choose the older airport, pax will still have to time it to get across from one to the other.
Wait and see I guess.

Freight a big driver of the move and is spending millions to move over to the new airport. Curfew at SYD is hindering the growth of freight

We dont need a curfew, the airport has been longer than anyone living under the flight path and modern planes are quieter than ever. We dont need WSI if we get rid of the curfew.

Maybe with cessation of all freight movements during the curfew periods and no exemptions for edge cases - divert to WSI?
Wonder how revenue for the landing would go in that case 😊

And fully utilise the E-W runway, to boot.

Someone called Albo has been very effective keeping the curfew. I don't see it going away.

Don't know but I do wonder how WSI will compete on landing charges. Airlines are known to play hardball and now they may have an alternative to leverage a better outcome in SYD?

My super fund partly owns SYD directly and indirectly. Im hoping that SYD is able to continue pillaging its customers' wallets, despite my views about WSI. 👍
