I always wondered about that restriction. Is it for kids that the limit is there or just the overly sensitive types?
I don't know.

This movie is rated M and includes people dying in fairly graphic ways, lots of dead bodies floating in the water, a mother and her child who are constantly in peril throughout the saga, etc etc. I didn't particularly want to see it myself but it's difficult to avoid.

I saw some unaccompanied minors being escorted on board who probably would have watched it - the FA's couldn't have stopped them from seeing it. I know my kids would have trouble sleeping if they'd seen it. :(

Last night on my PER-SYD flight, the movie shown was "Poseidon". I must say I found this somewhat inappropriate, as did a few other pax who I could hear talking nearby. I though disaster movies were generally avoided by the airlines?

I would have thought the airlines would generally avoid showing disaster movies involving aircraft crashes. Mind you, I would be most surprised if the movie "Poseidon" would be showing in cinemas on cruise liners:rolleyes:

As far as AVOD goes; This year, it's been working for me 5 out of 5 longhaul and 4 out of 6 on SYD/MEL Sectors. So I guess I have been lucky.

;)

(... looks furtively around for some wood to touch ...)

It worked for me too on my last 2 QF flights (1 longhaul and 1 trans-tasman). Of course neither of those were AVOD equipped, and the trans-tasman IFE had those ridiculously small screens (think I've been spoilt by EK, NZ and SQ) and you guessed it they started showing more than an hour into the flight and turned it off more than 30 minutes before landing, so not able to watch an entire movie (normal enough with QF trans-tasman eastbound but ridiculous for westbound).

Just be thankful they didn't play "Snakes on a Plane". :D:D:D

Normally fly CX to HK, but last night thought I would give QF29 a try. Qantas websire says all planes to HK are now with AVOD. Bull****, the flight last night had the old system. Obviously the people giving Qantas the award didn'tfly on this 747............
Also when did Qantas stop the hot breakfast in J ? A bit of fruit and 2 cold pieces of toast, I thought I was down the back of the bus ? Secondly the snacks available during flight were, a miniture apple, a cookie or a small chocolate bar. Wow.
Back to CX next time.

I don't fly as often as most people on this site and most of my flying is in economy but I have been on 24 QF flights in the last 3 years which have had IFE and I have had problems with it only once, SIN-MEL in April.

So for me reliability is not really an issue and the programming is satisfactory.

Well Poseidon is about a boat. But I get your point - and aircraft disaster moveis are def not on the playlist!

I think DJ with live TV are going to have some issues, they have already come out and said they can not and will not block or censor any programs on the channels they provide which means kids could be watching absolutely anything they wanted.

Not appropriate, especially unaccompained minors who don't have a parent to stop them watching Basic Instinct re-runs on Fox....

The person needs a credit card to swipe, so that *may* stop under 18's from using the system.

Of course children can get access to a credit card, but they're not going to book a flight just to watch a Basic Instinct re-run on Fox :)

(Not much different to the Qantas club really. They have several tv channels available. Nothing stopping someone from finding something savoury to change the channel to).

I think the point is that Foxtel is not controlled by DJ where as all other carriers that have AVOD approve the content. There are some pretty raunchy shows on FOX that I wouldn't want my daughter watching, however I don't know what channels Virgin are going to make available yet.

And I suppose you haven't heard of Visa Debit and Mastercard Debit, both my kids have them (so they can buy tracks etc online), alot of kids are now getting them for this reason.

The point is that on aircraft fitted with individual screens, pax can avoid the IFE system if they do not want to watch what is being shown by turning off their screen. On QF dom flights, you cannot easily avoid what is being shown as they have large shared screens dotted around the cabin.

I did not want to watch Poseidon but could not really avoid seeing it. It's difficult to avert your eyes when a screen is on in front of your face.

At least with LiveTV you can leave your screen off.

Do you work for Virgin yada yada? If so, I would really like to know what they will be doing to stop kids watching unsuitable programming, happy for you to PM me. Cheers.

On reading the Qantas Entertainment guide on QF29 last night they state that they no longer run modified movies and it up to the parent to supervise their children's viewing onindividual screens. This is not different to what DJ will do with Foxtel on individual units.

Indeed... thanks JohnK. ;)

pauly7 - I'm just a happy Virgin Blue passenger. I flew Qantas last week and am a gold FF with them.

To answer your question, given that the new Virgin Blue IFE system provides a small screen for each seat and that you must pay via cc to watch, it won't be as much of a problem as it is on planes that have large shared screens.

p.s. I often defend Virgin Blue because there is a level of recurring negative comment about the airline here on the forums and it is mostly unjustified based on my experiences.

/had 4 days work in China, so back to the flying tomorrow. Ferry to HK airport, what a breeze the ferries out of southern China are now, no more passport customs at the HK border, lugging baggage thru 2 checkpoints. Anyway away from the point, CX HK to SIN and then pickup QF9 and take the potluck on whether we have the 100% AVOD that Qantas Advertise. One of the shoe travellers here says QF to LON via HK, alternate the planes. one day AVOD, next trip not. Wonder if they do that QF9 as well.

I just had visions of travelling as a group of three and swiping the centre seat screen and taking along a 3-way headphone splitter. Then we can have the same arguments as at home when only one person can hold the remote control at a time  .

Now there might be a fight for who gets the B seats instead of the usual fight for the A or C seat :p .

I wonder how well you can view the screen from an angle? It's impossible to view the adjoining screen when sitting in a skybed seat on QF, but the angle would be a lot less in a DJ seat.

I guess the shoulders of the person in the B seat become pillows for the A and C pax  .

Admittedly on a small sample but LA´s brand new IFE is as unreliable as QF´s (ie I havent yet had it work properly). :td:
