Just wondering if anyone knows whether Qantas have completed installing the In-Flight Entertainment System in all of their 747's??

Not as of my recent flight on QF52 SIN/BNE 13 Sept. Some of the fleet must still be itching to get a re-fit (as are we, the travelling public). Just like QF's refit of First cabins (on the 3 class flights) starting this month and continuing into next year...

I'll ask my contact at 'Rockwell Collins', who are doing the refits, tomorrow or wednesday and post his response ASAP. (He normally has some interesting stories)

Lindsay, the QF52 from SIN to BNE you referred to wasn't a 743 by any chance was it? Sometimes it is, and that would explain the no IFE you experienced. My info is that the 744 refit is complete (IFE-wise, that is) and they have just started on the 743's. Of course, if my info is wrong, then you will help me to establish the credibility (or otherwise) of my newest source......

I don't think you could ever go back to the old entertainment system now that the new IFE has been installed.

When are the 743's expected to be completed by??

Dave, indeed it was a 743 - Nalanji Dreaming in fact (who can tell me the rego, I didn't get it?).

Hi Nick,

By the old IFE, do you mean the old 'big screen' on the INT runs and the fold-out screens on the DOM runs ?

If so, no. I never could go back to that. And thank God it is being upgraded, the old system was lousy. :D

I much prefer the individual screens, as per my other posts

Willyroo, indeed that's the bird!! It was leaving BNE as it had to pick me up in SIN that night (Thu 11 Sept) to fly Vicky and me home (QF52).

Hi Icemann,

Good to hear from you again. :D

Yeah, you're spot on with your predictions as to what I was referring to. That 14 hour flight from SIN to LHR is a real killer when you didn't like what was on the screen.

How things have changed!! The flight is still a killer, especially in economy, but is now made a little bit more bearable when you have a variety of things to watch.

Hi Nick,

Glad I could be of help. :)

The flight from SIN to LHR is bad enough in economy, I can only rank (IMHO) MEL-LAX as being just as bad. If not worse - on some flights, you get in at 7am and should really keep going until the evening so that you can get a proper sleep pattern again.

Trying to clear US immigration is not fun if you've not slept on the plane.

I flew FRA-SIN in business (J) a few months ago and that was beaut. I came off the plane in SIN and was ready to go, no problems. Thankfully, the IFE entertainment has come a long way on QF since the bad old days of 'the one big screen' in economy.
