Honestly, I don’t know what they were. They were kind of tart/sweet. They didn’t taste like tomato.

They do look like kumquats. If so they are quite a nice fruit provided you eat the whole thing skin and all

I agree - I'd go for kumquats. Sliced in half, deseeded (or mostly so), then cooked down slowly until soft and then maybe cooked in a syrup.

Would suit well with a lemon tart or flan, assuming that there's some definitive tartness to the lemon.

Are the FAs embarrassed, or oblivious to the poor quality, because that's all they see?

I'd say oblivious. Very few would fly First (or even Business) on carriers such as EK, SQ and JL.

I've always thought it to be the same reason for service, too. I genuinely think the front line staff have no clue what they're competing against.
