Qantas 'Enhances' Upgrade Rates

I use most of my points for upgrades on MEL-ADL and MEL-SYD, so I'm not too bothered because they haven't changed. I also use them for Flex J->F on LAX and LHR flights occasionally and they haven't changed either. I'm not prepared to play the lottery from Y as I'm not prepared to fly Y internationally at all.

So yes I'm fairly relaxed by this particular enhancement :)

J to F has changed for upgrades processed from Feb 20, 2017 unless you purchased Flex J fares or requested the upgrade before November 16, 2016.

Also I need SCs. If the upgrade fails (hopefully only in one direction) I still have points for another time.

This.

I've been fairly lucky with getting upgrades coast to coast. I almost always miss out when they use one of those updated 707's.

Everybody appears to be taking this 'enhancement' very calmly. Particularly as 'the other side' gets absolutely crucified at even a rumour of a potential change (most with far less impact than this change).

You beat me to it. The activity on this thread is tame compared to some other announcements.

Yelling serves no purpose other than to wind oneself up. QF have made their decision and I'm pretty sure that a few pax getting vociferous on AFF won't change their mind. It is what it is.

And perhaps we're all getting a bit too used to 'enhancements'.

I completely agree that getting excited achieves little. However, there appears to be a complete different reaction to what you see here when an 'enhancement' or 'service failure' occurs on the 'other side of the fence'. Ten to twenty pages of vitriol can result from an unconfirmed rumour or one isolated experience.

Hopefully this is the beginning of a bit more civilised discussion in all areas of AFF.

Ironically enough, now that I think of it, this was very much the reverse some years ago, particularly when QF was very much in the weeds.

When you look at the BA page on FlyerTalk then all this is minor. The vitriol over there is flowing freely. Certainly does show "when you're up, you're up. When you're down, you're down."

When Qf removed anytime lounge access for Plats a few years ago, after the huge outcry, Qf then allowed Plats Domestic lounge arrival access...so a minor win for the punters!

Maybe so, though I was told by an English lady who moved to Australia, "The reason why you Australians have poor quality things is because you don't complain enough, or hard enough." *shrugs*

Struggling to use your Frequent Flyer Points?

Frequent Flyer Concierge takes the hard work out of finding award availability and redeeming your frequent flyer or credit card points for flights.

Purely conjecture, but I have been thinking that the introduction of upgrades being granted at late as the gate along with upgrades from award bookings has brought this about.

Most flights I am on depart full in business, even though it may have been D9 two days before.

People are beginning to expect to be upgraded and this this may have changed PAX behavior - to the point it may have been reducing some revenue streams - this increase may go some way to ressurect that.

Now I won't show Mrscove the points whale ATO comments......she may not know I have been using some of her CCs with the fiscal fiend using partner cards.
Serfty I agree that upgrades could be eating into QF income in their business class domestic cabin even though it is pretty full.
So many sign ons Mastercove has a points balance now that is growing dramatically.
He is starting to get his girlfriend on board too.

The poor lad never stood a chance. Of course he was going to get sucked in to the FF game! :)

Naturally I am concerned that it has spread into my son's workplace 11sjw.
With Life Miles about to offer a Black Friday/Monday deal the world could be your oyster.
The word enhance is a really good one. Our family won't be troubled by these changes this February but many will find the new levels make it far tougher to fly up front.

If QF are concerned about the total accumulated FF points that might be redeemed (an oft-cited reason for 'enhancements' in AFF discussion), it would help if they made a few more seats available: then the points might get used and FF would feel good about the airline. Increasing redemption costs and decreasing earn rates just causes disillusionment and tempts us to look elsewhere. When QF announces enhancemnts that are anything but it just makes us cynical about QF and decreases trust and loyalty. Silly really as these are so hard to get and even harder to win back (I refused to fly QF for over 10 yars after some really bad experiences)

Personally, I think I'm more calm about this enhancement because the announcement did not say something like: "Our customers love to upgrade and they told us that they are happy to part with more of their hard earned points to get the same benefit". QF announcement on charging $60 for exit row on PER flights, even for status PAX, sounded pretty much like QF was doing us a favour by charging money.

In the case of BA...they must have hired the top graduate in how to spin a negative change: British Airways - BRITISH AIRWAYS AND MARKS & SPENCER JOIN FORCES TO PROVIDE BEST FOOD IN THE SKY FOR SHORT-HAUL CUSTOMERS

I understand how people want extra J and F seats to open up, but realistically the majority of international flights that Qantas operate are full by the time the flight departs anyway. If it's working the way it is at the moment with the 'low' numbers of reward seats given out, then why would they change it?

As for domestic flights, I can seem to get a seat nearly any day of the week (unless i'm missing the point on certain routes).

That's certainly not the case for transcontinental flights.
