Qantas / Emirates tie up (Partnership inc. Codeshare, Status)

Singapore isn't exactly a champion of gay rights either...

I find all this posturing rather ridiculous when you won't be even leaving the airport.

Whether you are in transit or not does not really matter, you are still subject to the local laws, with the increased flights through Dubai, how many Aussies are going to be caught with medicine and no actual prescription for it, which is an offence and another different example?

From a staff Q&A sheet, Qantas will now also offer a car service for eligible business and first customers. The product will not be downgraded, which ever airline has a better servivce, the other airline will also offer this under the agreement.

That sounds nice but I still harbour doubts about that part of car service.

Upfront, it is not cheap for QF. Well, actually it's just a small slice of yield for each eligible premium pax, but this is QF...

IIRC EK don't offer car service for J or F pax flying an EK codeshare (operated by another airline), e.g. they currently have agreements with TG and JL. IIRC as well purely Trans-Tasman itineraries (not those connecting to long haul international) are excluded from car service, with possible exception EK F.

Does anyone know if EK offer car service on award tickets?

I'm with JohnK here. I'm gay and won't be transiting through Dubai out of principle.

When I worked in London (back in 2006), one of my work colleagues, his brother-in-law got a job with EK (after working for BMI) as a FA. He's gay, with a partner, and resides in Dubai and still working for EK as far as l know.

In 2009 the deal that made no sense to AJ was with Etihad not Emirates.

PS-I also am unlikely to transit through DXB.But I have stayed in Dubai once and it just doesn't appeal to me.Give me BKK or SIN any day.

Currently with EK you can fly to SIN via MEL or BKK via SYD so an Asian stopover is feasible. You just then have two short flights to go after, rather than 1. Who knows if these will continue though

Here's a coffee table / few beers question for the brains trust - how many people think that the QF/EK alliance anti-trust immunity will be approved by the ACCC?

I suspect it will get the nod, but it might be subject to a few negotiations. While the airlines have put forward some arguments of the benefits to consumers, the ACCC is going to be interested in things such as the effect on prices, and whether there is an intention to co-ordinate at that level.

But as my main program is Aadvantage then flying EK to Asia makes no sense.
Another thought that popped into my brain this morning-Willie Walsh of IAG is on the public record as wanting to sponsor Qatar into OW.Will be interesting if this does happen and what effect it would have on the QF/EK tie up.

Carrying medicine without a script could also land you in trouble in many countries, inlcuding, ummmm Australia.

Aren't the labels attached to the container sufficient proof of a prescription?

OT: Certainly makes travel to Europe better I think. 2 similar length flights vs 1 short, 1 long and another short.

With a wife and daughters, Dubai is not a place I want to be hopping off the plan on my way to and from London. I think Qantas bosses have underestimated the fact that a large number of people will just not transit via the war ravaged middle east.!

Unless your daughters behave badly in public like some do here in Australia when they are on alcohol benders/party mode, your daughters will be safer in Dubai than in Australia.
Last time I looked, Dubai was not war ravaged, in fact, they do not support the current conflicts amongst other Arab nations.

If you are in transit, you have not signed any immigration/custom forms. You are in 'no mans land'.

Once QF high value PAX see the Emirates product compared to the QF product they will have some questions, but hubbing through DXB is eminently sensible for connections to all of Europe, the ME, Africa etc.

I can't see myself wanting to change to the Emirates FF program, even if I may prefer the Emirates product. The key here is that the QFF program allows me to fly around the world enjoying lounges and other forms of priority service (and point and SC earn) on Qantas, all the Oneworld airlines, and now Emirates. The Emirates program won't be recognised when I fly CX or BA (which I do occasionally). Likewise, whilst we haven't seen all the details yet, it may be that BAEC and AA programs won't have the same privileges as the QFF customers.

For this reason, I think the QFF program will be a big winner - getting back lots of flyers that they had lost. Even if the product on Emirates is potentially better.

All this meat talk isn't the best thing to read first thing in the morning... Now I want a bacon and egg roll... Mmmm... Bacon... Oops, bacon is pork...

Bacon is pork? Next you'll probably say Ham is pork too! All from the same animal.

Phwww - yeah right. A 'Magical' Animal.

(Thanks Homer Simpson)

I assume the same principle applies to Singapore and Malaysia?
Singapore has actually changed immensely over the past ten, twenty years and even has a very open and striving gay scene these days which is far from what you can say about Dubai. The internet in Singapore is actually far less censored in this respect that what Singtel-owned Optus offers us in the Australian QF lounges ;)

Saying the above- I am gay myself and atheist and still have been to Dubai many times. Hey, I wouldn't route through DFW either if the political attitudes of most Texans keep me from traveling there. I would never want to live in such a place (I've happily lived in Singapore for almost two years and had zero problems in this respect...) but for a stopover, no problem at all. And the (male) staff on EK is at least as gay as it is on most airlines so no problem either. Now, a good friend of mine is Jewish and he will indeed not travel via Dubai which I can very well understand.

Not correct, and there is a long list of arrests made in the Dubai Transit area for a variety of problems. Different country, different laws.

Very interesting!

Not many Australians will stop in Dubai as a transit stop. 95% will just go to thier final destination and won't leave the airport. Anyone who does stop would do thier research on the local laws - so many Australians already stop there daily.

If your prescriptions are in your stowed luggage, then the luggage is simply moved from one plane to another, or even stays on the same plane, and your items never 'exposed' to Dubai legislation.

This makes a huge difference for those of us in Adelaide who have to tack on an extra 4 hours or so to go anywhere with Qantas.

We have Business flights booked with Emirates and will have chauffeur collect in Venice (it looks like each person gets their own car? :)) and drop off in Singapore. It is part of the booking process.
