@serfty , 44 minutes from departing the gate to arriving back at it (when the aircraft never left the ground) is a fairly long time.

Perhaps storms in and around SYD this afternoon meant a lengthy wait to commence the (aborted) take-off roll?

QF is stating the delayed QF1 (see above) with A388 VH-OQB will depart at 2130 hours, arriving SIN at 0235 hours on Monday 5 January 2026, 300 minutes late.

I don't know if passengers who earlier alighted have boarded for a second time.

If anyone has information about whether meal vouchers were distributed (and the value: hopefully not just A$15 given the extortionate prices charged at airports in most Western nations including Oz, and SYD), that would be interesting.

UPDATE: As at 2140 hours, QFi wasn't appearing on FR24. In the past, this often hasn't been a good sign, though apparently on occasion the aircraft's signals can be blocked by buildings and hence not appear on such sites.

FR24 is suggesting the delayed QF1 will depart SYD on 4 January shortly, at 2210 hours.

It is displaying on FR24 - a good sign.

Separately, QF73 (2125 hours mid evening SYD-SFO, B789 VH_ZNB) was expected to depart at 2215, 50 late.

UPDATE: QF1 did depart at 2210 from SYD. By 2217 it was fourth in the queue for takeoff.

On Monday 5 January 2026, QF1 (A388 VH-OQB) arrived SIN at 0251 hours, 316 minutes late after the flight was only in the air for seven hours and 17 minutes ex Sydney, about 20 minutes faster than quite a few other recent comparators.

QFi suggests the second sector timetabled to depart at 2335 on Sunday night should have departed at 0400 Singapore time (0700 AEDT) while FR24 claimed '0410', but both these times have passed. Pushback after 0440 SIN time looks likely as the aircraft is not yet displaying on FR24. Acknowledging not every day has identical winds, but based on recent days, unlikely that much time will be picked up on a net basis on the second sector.

On Sunday 4, QF64 (A388 VH-OQD) was airborne from JNB at 2111 mid evening so Monday 5 in SYD should be about 1731 hours, 181 minutes behind schedule.

With VH-OQK on QF94 estimated to arrive MEL 48 minutes late at 1018 hours (ex LAX), its turnaround for the return QF93 back to LAX is anticipated to see pushback at 1225 rather than the timetabled 1200 'high noon'. Based on recent experiences, this could be a slight underestimate of the delay.

The Saturday 3 January QF3 (SYD-AKL-JFK) should just be landing in the latter at 1540, so by the time it gets to the terminal (allowing my arbitrary five minutes, often it takes longer) it will be at least 1545, so 80 minutes late. This may delay the return QF4 that's due out at 1715 a little, but often the 'reversal' iat JFK seems efficient. 'The 3' and 'the 4' have quite a good punctuality record.

B789 VH-ZNL on the LAX down to BNE QF16 arrived on 5 January at 0532 hours, 32 late.

Given its very late departure from SYD last night, no surprise that QF103 to HNL arrived same day only a few minutes ago at 1031 hours, 91 minutes late. A333 VH-QPL is expected to depart at 1205, 80 minutes late. Again, this should prove to be somewhat optimistic.

Updating the above, the much delayed QF1 was airborne from SIN at 0512 hours on Monday 5 January with LHR gate arrival estimated as 1023 hours, 248 minutes late. by FR24 but 1045 hours by FlightAware.

In further on Monday 5 January, QF63, the 0930 hours SYD-JNB rostered for A388 VH-OQL is delayed to an expected 1105 hours pushback.

The aircraft arrived in SYD this morning (ex LAX) as QF12 at 0846, 81 minutes late so it would have been impossible to get it ready with all freight and passengers boarded by 0930 hours or anything close.

UPDATE: The flight took off at 1126 with JNB arrival forecast for 1559 hours, 59 minutes late at the gate.

A333 VH-QPH is on QF59, the timetabled 1200 'high noon' SYD-HND altered to depart half an hour late.

FR24 now suggests QF1 will arrive at its gate in London at 1102 hours on Monday 5, 287 minutes late.

QF19, the 1205 hours lunchtime SYD-MNL took off at 1312 with gate arrival forecast for 1802, 32 minutes behind for A333 VH-QPK.

Tonight's QF103 is an A332, not A333, with pushback for this SYD-HNL normally 2010 hours departure delayed to 2135 hours.

A332 VH-EBL is rostered on QF37, the 1655 hours afternoon MEL up to busy SIN. It is predicted to depart at 2000 hours. EBL arrived this morning on QF36 (ex SIN) in MEL at 0632 hours, 17 minutes late, so unsure why the delay.

Also on Monday 5 January, A388 VH-OQD arrived ex JNB in SYD at 1751 hours, 201 minutes late as QF64. It is to form QF11, the 1745 hours SYD-LAX forecast to depart 95 minutes late at 1920 hours in the early evening.

Thank you @ABC1 .

QF suggests today's delayed QF1 is to push back at 1830 hours, 135 minutes later than its scheduled 1615 hours departure.

UPDATE: QF1's anticipated departure has changed again, to 1900 hours.

FURTHER UPDATE: QF1 was airborne at 1919 hours with SIN arrival according to FR24 at 0037 on Tuesday 6, 182 minutes late. Sometimes FR24 overstates the actual delay: it can be revised later in the flight.

QF037 ETD 2315 (local) ETA 0340+1
QF038 ETD 0500+1 ETA 1535+1

QF119/QF126 (BNE/AKL/BNE) cancelled.

On Tuesday 6 January 2026, QF63 (0930 hours SYD-JNB) is delayed for the third consecutive day. A388 VH-OQA took off at 1147 with gate arrival expected at 1641 hours, 101 minutes late.

QF64 (JNB-SYD) has -OQL with gate arrival in Sydney expected at 1540 hours, 70 minutes late.

-OQG is operating QF7, the 1405 hours mid afternoon SYD-DFW. Forecast departure is 40 minutes late at 1445 hours.

The 5 January QF1 from SIN to LHR should on Tuesday 6 January arrive at its gate at about 0735 hours, 80 minutes late with A388 VH-OQH the aircraft.

A332 VH-EBB is on QF35, the 1205 hours lunchtime MEL-SIN predicted to push back at the unusual time of 1449 hours. This aircraft arrived in MEL at 1203 hours, eight minutes late as QF770 from PER so would have had to transfer to the MEL T2 international.
