Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Sometimes I’ve watched FR24 and you’ll have multiple wide bodies waiting for takeoff on the main 34L runway… and waiting… while a tiny saab comes in for landing. 34R is completely unused and nothing arriving or departing. 🤷‍♂️
FR24 is not the greatest source considering it blocks many ADSB aircraft and obviously doesn’t show non ADSB traffic. ADSB exchange doesn’t block.

On Sunday 14 December 2025, QF63 ex SYD arrived in JNB at 1811 hours, 191 minutes late with A388 VH-OQJ. A prompt turnaround occurred, with QF64 (the 1730 hours) airborne at 2050 hours. On Monday 15, SYD gate arrival should be about 1714 hours, 164 minutes behind schedule. If it's forming QF11 (1745 hours SYD-LAX) , this will be delayed.

A332 VH-EBR from SIN to BNE is arriving on Monday at 0915 AEST, 35 late.

'Spare' A388 VH-OQC still hasn't left LAX for SYD.

If a test flight is required, it hasn't performed that either, despite QFi originally suggesting it'd be on its way to Sydney on Thursday 11 December California time.

Continuing with Monday 15 December, QF11 (1745 hours SYD-LAX) has been altered to depart two hours late at 1945, so presumably it's being formed by the delayed QF64 ex JNB that should be at its SYD gate at around 1729 hours, 179 minutes late. A388 VH-OQJ is the plane.

QF7 (A388 VH-OQH), the 1405 hours afternoon SYD-DFW, has recently been put back to an expected 1515 hours pushback.

Earlier, sister plane -OQB on QF93 (1200 'high noon' MEL-LAX) didn't become airborne until 1350 hours. Same day arrival is slated for 72 late at 0837 hours.

UPDATE: QF7 was in the sky at 1557 hours, so DFW gate arrival should be approximately 1336 hours, 66 late.

In more on 15 December, the HNL down to SYD QF104 has A333 VH-QPL with arrival forecast at gate for 2002 hours, 102 minutes late. The return QF103 that's timetabled to depart at 2010 hours is delayed until an expected 2125, but FR24 claims it's an Airbus A332 not 333. I wonder is QPL forming it?

B738 VH-XZK on QF102 from NAN to SYD arrived its gate at 1924 hours, 59 behind.

After pulling into its gate at 1723 hours - 173 minutes late - A388 VH-OQJ as QF64 from JNB took off from SYD at 2012 hours as QF11, the 1745 hours to LAX. Same day arrival is forecast as 1422 hours, 112 minutes late, not too bad when one considers how late the arrival from Johannesburg was.

B789 VH-ZNI on QF94, the Sunday 14 December 2250 hours LAX-MEL did not become airborne until 0105 hours on Monday 15, so gate arrival on Tuesday 16 is likely at about 1115 hours, 105 late. QF93 from MEL to LAX tomorrow is a B789 not A380, so if this aircraft is 'forming its own', it will suffer a delay.

B789 VH-ZND as QF3 from AKL to JFK on Monday 15 December (the 1655 hours) took off at 1809, arriving at 1536 hours, 71 minutes late.

Last night's QF139, the 1855 hours SYD to CHC did not get in the sky until 2014 hours so arrival at gate became 0051 hours on Tuesday 16, 51 minutes behind schedule. This was the third time in seven days it was more than an hour late arriving, not counting one night when the aircraft diverted back to SYD.

This wasn't displaying last night, but the Tuesday 16 December QF93 (1200 'high noon' MEL-LAX) has been altered to depart mid afternoon at 1530 hours, 210 minutes late. At present, this flight is mostly a B789, and that's true today. A388s make an occasional appearance. although I don't have access to the January 2026 rosters with busy Christmas holiday demand.

Also on Tuesday 16 December 2025, QF79, the 0925 hours MEL-NRT (A333 VH-QPA) was in the sky at 1017 so gate arrival becomes approximately 1908 hours, 88 minutes late.

Sister plane -QPJ is operating QF127 (1115 hours late morning SYD-HKG airborne at 1220 hours) so gate blocks on looks like 1823, 33 late.

A333 VH-QPK's pushback on QF19, the 1205 hours SYD-MNL is predicted for 1310 hours, so it's likely to arrive in the Filipino capital at least half an hour late assuming no holding pattern(s) on the journey.

UPDATE: QF19 pointed skywards at 1320 hours so a 45 minute late gate arrival - 1815 hours - is expected.

"Spare" QFi A380 VH-OQC remains in LAX following its loss of a wing slat on a flight from SYD. It is almost five days since it was meant to commence its empty positioning flight back across the Pacific to Sydney.

On Tuesday 16 December 2025, B789 VH-ZNH as QF28 from SCL arrived in SYD at 1855 hours, 75 minutes late. This was because the plane had four previous significantly delayed flights (starting with a sick child on QF3 SYD-AKL-JFK necessitating a deviation to PPT) and QF27 didn't arrive SCL until 1223 hours, 88 late on Monday 15.

This B789 is booked on QF73 tonight that's scheduled to depart at 2125 hours mid evening, so hopefully this will be punctual.

On 15th December QF22 DFW-MEL took off four hours late.

It boarded ~6pm local for a scheduled 6:20pm departure.

PAX were confronted by a bus gate. However, it seems the hard stand used has no fuel plumbing and all fuel needs to be trucked.

Given the route ... there was a lot needed and it took some time

It has now been diverted to Brisbane as the crew would be "out of hours" if they went through to Melbourne.

Currently Qantas are hoping to have a replacement crew available there and the aircraft would continue to Melbourne. With that it would arrive after 10pm.

The other option would be to move PAX to domestic flights from Brisbane..
