Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Qantas were being a bit optimistic in hoping to turn around B789 VH-ZND after its delayed arrival with QF22, in under 90 minutes to operate today's QF21. Currently shown as delayed with no new time estimates.

For QF21 back to DFW, the scheduled 1400 hours ex MEL, as at 1522 AEDT VH-ZND still is not visible on FR24's map. Occasionally this can be due to a building blocking the signal but mostly it's a bad sign. Given the aircraft has been at its gate since 1250 hours (lunchtime), it's becoming a lengthy (though not unprecedented) turnaround.

Oddly, QF's flight status page shows it as 'delayed' but with an expected departure on time at 1400, almost 85 minutes ago.

Dallas, Texas weather:

..WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM CST
THURSDAY...

* WHAT...Mixed precipitation, primarily in the form of freezing
rain and/or sleet is expected. Total ice or sleet accumulations
around one quarter inch. Bursts of sleet may total 1/2 inch in
some spots.

* WHERE...North and Central Texas.

* WHEN...Until 6 AM CST Thursday.

* IMPACTS...Dangerous travel conditions will continue into early
Thursday morning. Roads will become nearly impassible in some
areas later today. Bridges and overpasses will remain icy.

QF12, the Tuesday 31 January 2230 hours LAX-SYD (A388 VH-OQK) was airborne at 0026 hours on Wednesday 1 February so at gate arrival on Thursday 2's morning should be 0950 hours, 75 minutes behind schedule.

QF52 from LAX to BNE has unusually been half an hour or a bit more late arriving on a couple of recent days but the current one is on time. This is one of QFi's most punctual offerings.

QF8 eventually found a gap in the weather, and took off at 15:25 CST, 4 hours late, after sitting at the head of the runway for the last 3½ hours of the delay. Once again, Qantas flight status is showing the push back time, and not the take off time - misleading for anyone not aware of the weather situation in Dallas, and excruciating for the passengers on board the flight.

It’s going via AKL.

Yesterday's delayed QF8 is enroute AKL to SYD after a further delay in Auckland - now due in Sydney at 15:05 AEDT, over-all 7 hours 35 minutes late.

On Thursday 2 February, QF19 (lunchtime 1225 hours SYD-MNL) has A333 VH-QPC. It was airborne at 1405 so expected arrival becomes 1836 hours, 66 minutes late at its allocated MNL gate. This flight used to be quite a good runner but for weeks has suffered delays on many days, with one of the worst being six hours earlier this week (see above).

A388 VH-OQB on Wednesday's ex SYD QF1 is arriving LHR at a projected0717 hours, 62 behind.

A332 VH-EBM is on QF67, the 0920 hours MEL-DEL that was not airborne until 1222 hours, so arrival at gate at 1901 is expected, 151 late. EBM had come in to Melbourne from Perth at 0548 hours this morning, only eight late, so no obvious reason why it was delayed. This is the third consecutive QF67 to be badly late.

QF43 from SYD to DPS has been reduced to a B738 since the end of school holidays and is today expected to push back at 1915 hours, 160 minutes behind schedule. QF44 (redeye back down overnight to SYD) will be afflicted.

Looks like QF93 has been cancelled today MEL>LAX, flow on effect of DFW weather issues last few days??

Edit - Looks like QF94 cancelled inbound is the root cause. People being transferred to United, watch this space for same outbound I guess.

There has been no 24 hour delay to the QF94 recently. Today was 2 hours and yesterday 44 minutes.
Ah yes its todays QF94 that's cancelled, I read something wrong as it indicated QF94 cancelled yesterday but it was only delayed into a new day! Thanks for clarification.

QF157 is cancelled due to inbound flight delay which will not make it in the outbound flight to Auckland before the curfew.

This flight and the return QF22 have now been cancelled, no doubt due to the Dallas weather situation.
Im not sure

If the unfavourable weather continue why was QF7 able to depart on 2Feb and AA34 AKL to DFW.
AA34 arrives about 4:30hrs before QF21 into DFW and therefore closer in time to the bad weather.

QF21 does not ordinarily operate on Thursdays which is 2Feb. I suspect this is the reason it never operated.
After arriving as QF22 5 hrs late via AKL on 1Feb, VH-ZND continues to sit in MEL as of today 4Feb. It could have operated as QF22 on 2Feb and arrived back on 4Feb without impinging on the operations of the 787 fleet.

Of course assuming there was crew to operate it. on 2 consecutive days QF21and QF8 diverted to AKL. QF21 arrived to final destination 5hrs late and QF8 7.5hrs late. QF must have sent 787 crews to AKL on both occasions. Could a crewing situaton have prevented QF21 from operating on 2Feb??
