Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Now I'm really angry. Just received the flight cancellation for QF50. Blatantly obvious it was coming yet they insisted it was operating. 0115 in SFO and joining the queue again...

I was flying DCA to SFO to join QF50. Flight delayed ex DCA and prior to boarding received notification QF50 delayed departure, arrived SFO at 1am 30/9. Shortly thereafter received notification QF50 cancelled - could not find QF staff at SFO - had to use call centres with limited success. Was rebooked SFO - LA - MEL had to find my own luggage at SFO as QF staff not available and QF did not make arrangements for it to be transferred to AA for SFO-LA leg at 5.50pm. QF issued hotel voucher dated for 29th which was not honoured by hotel as it was 30/10! My understanding is that QF not longer has customer facing office at SFO - QF customers must use QF call centres. Not a great experience QF.

Hi ausguy...welcome!

SFO-LAX-MEL certainly was a preferable option to my SYD transit!

How was the hotel voucher issued, did you receive this electronically after talking to customer service?

It was sent via email after contact with the call centre

donovan301, you posted this 24 minutes ago but the aircraft (A333 VH-QPE) that had become airborne until 0949 did not turn around to return to BNE until a few minutes ago, when it was northeast of Townsville.

Hey there Melb1,
Yep I see the time discrepency you are pointing out.
Turnaround desicion was madeabout 15 minutes before I posted,
.... but delayed due to required fuel dumping, hence the delay in physical turnaround.
Possibly due to dumping fuel in a more favourable area than the reef or city atmosphere.
Notification came from a QF insider to me in realtime...
Nicely spotted though.
Happy Wednesday.

In more on Saturday 29 September, QF79, the 0910 hours from MEL up to NRT departed 94 late at 1044 so arrival has been put back to a suggested 2003 tonight, 88 late.

QF127 from SYD to HKG was 27 late away at 1102 so arrival is likely at 1830, half an hour behind.

One I missed yesterday - QF27, the 1135 hours late morning B744 from SYD across to SCL - departed 63 late, arriving at 1157, 47 late. 'The 28' was 57 late in pushing back at 1427 hours from SCL so SYD arrival on Saturday is a claimed 1750, an hour behind.

On Saturday 29, QF63 (1055 hours SYD - JNB, B744 VH-OEH) had been diplaying this morning as a forecast only 20 late in pushing back, but this became a 1231 hours takeoff so arrival is likely at 1812, 72 late. QF64 tonight, the 1910 hours redeye back to SYD will be delayed.
I was on QF64 as mentioned above. We were initially informed of a 70 minute delay early that morning. We then eventually only departed at 11:28 PM after being told we would need to fly via Perth to refuel as there was an issue with fueling the plane fully and we would not make it all the way to Sydney. We were in Perth for an hour to refuel and then flew to Sydney arriving 9.24 PM local time, 6HRS. 29MIN. late. Everyone catching connecting flights were put on flights the next day and put up in Sydney for the night. We stayed in the Stamford Plaza and were provided a $50 room credit each. We flew on to the Gold Coast the next morning via the 6:40 AM Jetstar flight arriving home around 14 hours later than expected. Qantas staff were excellent in providing updates in-flight and customised individual information once we arrived in Sydney.

Today Thursday the 4th

Cancellations
QF404 MEL-SYD 6 30am service
QF37/38 was cancelled again for a second day in a row
QF425 SYD-MEL 10 30am service
QF509 BNE-SYD 8 05am service

Delays
QF575 SYD-PER (744 service) left Syd at 9 20 (55 min tardy) expected at 11 45am, 35 late.
QF 574 PER-SYD left at 6 35 (80 behind), expected at 12 09 (49 late).

QF1520 delayed due weather in SYD. Held over the Hume Highway between Yass and Goulburn waiting for a slot at SYD.
QF25 delayed to 2130 due late arrival.
They announced the delay to 25 just after I got to the gate. Saw that it was at least 40 minutes to the revised boarding, so I went back to the lounge.
Boarding started a 2130. Pushed back just after 2200. Closer to the departure time under daylight savings.

QF25 is delayed overnight until 1345 tomorrow. VH-OEE operated SYD-PER-SYD and was 3 hours late due to weather at SYD and it was too late to get QF25 out before curfew.

Earlier on Friday 5 October 2018, QF19, the 1210 hours SYD up to MNL departed 54 late, arriving at 1914, 44 minutes behind the timetable.

The B744 on QF63 was again delayed, departing at 1203 hours (68 minutes past the timetable) so arrival is a suggested 1800 hours, an hour behind. The return overnight QF64 should be at least 35 late departing JNB.

QF81 (morning 1015 hours SYD - SIN) departed 74 late, arriving at 1757, 67 minutes tardy.

While QF15 (B789 BNE to LAX, the 1010 hours) was only 16 minutes late off blocks, arrival is estimated at 38 late (0638 hours same day).

'The 11' from SYD to LAX was 48 minutes behind time in departing at 1023 hours; arrival should be 45 late at 0705.

QF7, the long SYD - DFW A388-operated flight pushed back 128 late at 1503 this afternoon for a claimed 1535 hours, 125 late Texan arrival.

Flagship QF1 was 43 late away at 1638 hours this afternoon, so SIN arrival is an estimated 2250, 35 late.

I'm glad that didn't happen yesterday. Otherwise, I'd be in Tokyo now having missed the last connection to Osaka.

With the Daylight Saving change this weekend, the QF25 departure gets pushed back an hour (while the scheduled 0515 HND arrival remains the same). A late arrival from PER was the reason for the QF25 delay yesterday. With the later departure time starting from Sunday, are these overnight delays going to become more likely given that 747 delays on the PER flights seem to be common?

Himeno, I lack the powers of prescience but with two bad delays in the past week according to FR24, a 2150 hours timetabled departure will be unhelpful to getting away that night.

As we all know quote a few international airlines schedule departures out of SYD at around 2130 - 2230 and mostly it seems to work, but I don't monitor it every day and there must be occasions when they fail to beat curfew.

From observation - I've not travelled on them - the problem appears to be that a B744 is late ex SYD across to PER and then tends to take longer than the scheduled turnaround time in the western capital. This is not weather-related delays.

The delayed QF63 led to QF64 taking off from JNB at 2121 hours, almost two hours late on Friday 5 October 2018. QF64 has B744 VH-OEH but appears to be diverting to PER with this unscheduled intermediate stop showing as 1211 to 1315 on Saturday 6 and consequent SYD arrival at 1915 tonight instead of 1455.

This may mean a delay to the 2050 hours QF25, so if so, Himeno has been prescient.

In yet more troubles for the B744s, QF73, the 1245 hours lunchtime Saturday 6 SYD - SFO has been altered to depart at 1710 meaning estimated arrival at 1335 hours same day, 270 minutes behind time.

The 747s are only operating on SYD-PER for another couple of days as far as I am aware so there should not be an on going impact to QF25 as it will revert back to be being operated by either inbound QF28 or QF64 which arrive earlier than PER.

slightly OT but an interesting read on ATW especially the investment in standby crew and aircraft.

According to the news agency dpa, Lufthansa has spent about €250 million ($287 million) this summer on compensation payments to passengers and is ready to invest the same amount of money.

Specifically, Lufthansa LCC Eurowings plans to have up to six standby aircraft available to optimize schedules in summer 2019. If individual flights are delayed too long, Eurowings will use these aircraft from the middle of the day onward on short notice to bring the daily flight schedule back on track.

So it seems the impact of having a proper mandated compensation system can positively effect consumers in more than one way

Plenty of cancellations and delays out/in Sydney yesterday, potentially weather related.

For today
QF405 SYD-MEL 6 30am service cancelled
QF419 SYD-MEL 9am service cancelled
QF423 SYD-MEL left at 11 21am, 81 behind, arriving 12 39, 64 tardy.
QF678 ADL-MEL 10 10am service cancelled
QF924 SYD-CNS left at 10 44, 184 min behind, expected to arrive at 12 31pm 161 behind schedule.
QF2016 SYD-WTB left at 9 19, 74 late, arrived at 9 35, 50 min late.
QF2040 left 89 minutes late at 9 44am, landed at 10 24, 69 min tardy.
QF1788 BNE-TSV left 117 minutes tardy at 8 42am, landed 10 20am, 95 late.

QF9 ex-MEL at 1615 on 12/10 has just been delayed to ~0615 on 13/10

Haven’t worked out why yet

Few J seats ex-MEL left on QF/EK on 12/10 as the scramble for alternatives happens

Looks like QF50 10/10 ex-SFO delayed by approx 20hrs meaning an 0315 arrival Sat 13/10 after the QF49 inbound on 10/10 was largely on time.
