Qantas Delays/Cancellations

Saturday 18 March's QF12 departed LAX 86 minutes late at 2356 with SYD arrival on Monday 20 March estimated at 0822 hours, 52 minutes late.

QF16 is delayed until an expected 0055 with Monday BNE arrival estimated as 75 minutes behind schedule at 0720 hours.

UPDATE: QF16 departed LAX at 0110 hours on Sunday 19 with Monday 20 likely arrival becoming 0745, 100 minutes late. Barring major problems discovered in BNE, this should not delay the Monday 20 March QF15 (BNE back to LAX.)

UPDATE: QF16 departed LAX at 0110 hours on Sunday 19 with Monday 20 likely arrival becoming 0745, 100 minutes late. Barring major problems discovered in BNE, this should not delay the Monday 20 March QF15 (BNE back to LAX.)
QF16 had a runway departure of 0141 and is estimated to hit the BNE runway 0732+1 (in about 40 minutes); gate arrival of 0740.

QF94 landed 0701 with a gate arrival of 0714, 46 minutes early.

It would have been earlier if MEL ground crew had had gate 9 configured for A380 rather than (I presume) two gate mode (9A & 9B). The aircraft had to wait off the gate until they changed it.

On Monday 20 March, QF495, the 0615 hours SYD - MEL was cancelled. QF407 (B738 VH-VXC, the 0715 hours SYD - MEL) took off at 0801, about 25 minjutes late and is arriving at roughly 0923, 33 minutes behind schedule.

A332 VH-EBN on the early morning 0625 hours SYD - PER, QF565 did not take off until 0810 with the result that anticipated arrival has become 0930, 70 minutes tardy. It then looks to be forming QF772, the 1000 PER - MEL so that may depart at least a few minutes late.

Northern Tasmania may have fog this morning, with QF2051, the 0820 MEL - DPO expected to depart more than half an hour late. QF codeshare flights using JQ aircraft are worse affected with one departure from either end (MEL - LST route) delayed by an expected three hours plus.

VH-VZB on QF610, the 0900 hours MEL up to BNE was airborne at 1023 so arrival has been delayed until a predicted 1117, 57 minutes tardy.

QF171 (1015 hours MEL - WLG, B738 VH-XZD) took off at 1100; arrival in the windy city should be at about 1620, 35 minutes late.

In further on Monday 20 March, QF692 (the 1610 hours from ADL across to MEL) took off at 1650 with arrival suggested at 31 minutes tardy for aircraft B738 VH-VYL.

It looks like CBR airport was closed to arrivals for a while (unfortunately the BOM radar for Captain's Flat is inoperable) as QF1493 (Q400 VH-QOS), the 1735 hours SYD - CBR that took off on time or even early at 1745 hours has performed numerous circuits and is not expected to arrive until 1857, 27 minutes late. VA660 was just ahead of QF1493 and also was in a holding pattern for a long time.

The BNE - CBR QF961 (B738 VH-VXU) is also held up and should be at its terminal 34 late at 1904 early this evening.

As at 1920 hours AEDT, a heavy storm is approaching MEL and environs from the north so happy days.

A332 VH-EBD on QF475 (1135 hours MEL across to PER thatw as airborne at 1233) should arrive 38 minutes tardy at 1318 this afternoon.

The 1215 hours QF1535 from CBR to MEL took off at 1331 with B717 VH-NXJ. Arrival should be at about 1438, 73 minutes behind schedule on a wet Melbourne day.

QF433 (1230 hours SYD down to MEL, A332 VH-EBE) wass airborne at 1332 with arrival suggested at 1455, 50 minutes late.

Daily flagship departure from SYD QF1 is normally pretty punctual, unlike QF9 (its Melbourne colleague.) However on Tuesday 21 March QF1 departed SYD 72 late at 1757. DXB arrival is predicted as on time at 0040 on Wednesday 22.

With what looked to be a heavy storm approaching SYD at around 1830 hours, many aircraft were in the west of Goulburn hold. QF764 (1605 hours ADL across to SYD, B738 VH-VXB) took off early at 1614 but arrival is not predicted until at least 1900, half an hour behind but comparing this to similar previous 'weather events' (or just plain old, non-redundant 'weather'), such delays can increase given storm severity and a queue of aircraft trying to land. It will be interesting to see if any aircraft divert to CBR.

The 1555 hours HBA up to SYD, QF1584 (B717 VH-YQW) should pull in at roughly 1852, 67 late.

QF765 (1640 hours SYD across to ADL, B738 VH-VZV) was airborne at 1822 hours; arrival is suggested at 1936, 81 minutes late.

QF1484 (Q400 VH-LQK, the 1755 hours departure) was very punctual in taking off at 1801 but stuck in a hold even further west it has been to no avail, with arrival now suggested as 1926, 36 late.

The Monday 20 March QF10 departed LHR at 1152, three minutes early, arriving DXB at 2224, 36 early. There the good run ended: departure was not until 0159 hours on Tuesday 21, 54 minute stardy with projected MEL arrival tonight at 2225, a similar hour late. QF9, the 2325 hours back from MEL to DXB and LHR will therefore be at least 45 minutes tardy departing on Tuesday 21.

B738 VH-XZH (QF496, the 1745 hours MEL - SYD that took off at 1828) should arrive at around 1958, 48 minutes late.

Earlier, QF5 departed SYD 70 minutes late at 1825; SIN arrival is predicted as the same number of minutes late at 2340.

Following on from QF5 being delayed yesterday as above, QF6 is predicted to arrive SYD on Wednesday 22 March at about 1152, 62 minutes late. Aircraft is A332 VH-EBM.

Hi all - does anybody know what the delay to today's QF15 was caused by (delayed ~3:50 to a 2pm departure)? I'm taking QF12 out of JFK tomorrow night and I'm expecting this will probably take a bit of a hit as a result of the late inbound...

Keep a close eye on your booking - a delay of that magnitude for QF 15 may well see the LAX-JFK-LAX sectors for that aircraft cancelled and pax rebooked on AA.

An accurate prediction - it has come to pass.

Also on Wednesday 22 March 2017, QF453 (the 1700 hours SYD down to MEL that took off at 1817) should arrive at about 1934, 59 minutes behind. Aircraft is B738 VH-VYL.

The 1730 hours MEL - SYD (QF454) took off at a much delayed 1859, so arrival of A332 VH-EBR is unlikely prior to 2004 hours, 69 minutes late. As a result, QF583, the 1955 hours SYD - PER is predicted to depart about 70 minutes late.

SYD has been wet this afternoon with storms north of it at 2000 hours looking ominous and up to 30,000 residents without power for what is said to be 24 hours. There have been quite a few QF cancellations including QF1483, the 1630 hours SYD - CBR; QF2217, the 1855 hours to ABX and QF2178, the 1900 hours SYD - PQQ.

QF451 (1715 hours SYD down to MEL) took off at 1956 (A333 VH-QPC, relatively rare usage of this QFi aircraft on this domestic sector) with expected arrival at 2100, 130 minutes tardy. It had earlier arrived from PEK as QF108 at about 1735, 160 minutes tardy.

VH-QPC is next rostered on the Thursday 23 March QF412, the 0730 hours MEL - SYD. This appears to be poor utilisation for this in-demand refurbished QFi plane but the bad weather in SYD may have meant no other suitable aircraft was available for QF451, as like most transport operators airlines try to avoid using an aircraft on a flight that is not arriving until after the second flight is timetabled to depart.

Concurrently with VH-QPC operating southbound, stablemate VH-QPA is working northbound on QF6156 from MEL to SYD that should arrive at about 2115.

QF28, the SCL - SYD long haul (B744 VH-OEF) most unusually had to divert to MEL, arriving at about 1815 hours. At 1957 it took off from MEL. SYD arrival is predicted at about 2106 which is 201 minutes later than the timetabled 1745. One assumes this was due to bad weather in SYD. I cannot previously recall QF28 having diverted to MEL. As a flow-on, QF25, the 2135 hours SYD - HND is expected to depart at 2230 which may be a little optimistic: 2250 would be more likely.

Often QF25 gains on the timetable on a gate-to-gate basis so arrival in HND may only be 45 minutes late tomorrow morning (Thursday 23.)

QF463 (1830 hours SYD down to MEL that took off at 2004 hours, B738 VH-VXM) should arrive at around the 2113 mark, 68 minutes behind schedule. QF479, the following departure due out at 1845 (VH-VXF) took off at 2009 so a 2123 hours arrival is predicted, 63 late.

The 1805 hours BNE - SYD (QF563) took off at 1859 with B738 VH-VYD, so the 2113 hours predicted arrival will be 33 minutes late.

One other delay that I missed was how on Monday 20 March, QF9 departed MEL at 2347 hours, 22 minutes late with DXB Tuesday 21 arrival an unexceptional 0702, 32 late. However it did not then depart DXB until 1604 (instead of 0830 hours, so 454 minutes late) with LHR arrival that night at 2004 instead of 1240 hours - 444 minutes tardy.

QF10 appears to not have operated on Tuesday 21 March either ex LHR or DXB. Advice from other AFF members would be helpful. QF2 ex LHR on Tuesday 21 was not delayed.

The 2155 hours SYD - HNL (QF3) on Wednesday 22 March has been delayed from 2155 hours to an expected 2230 in its departure.

QF466, the 1945 hours MEL - SYD took off at 2144 (A333 VH-QPC) with arrival expected at 2253, 103 minutes late. QF494, the scheduled northbound 2100 hours took off at 2156 so it should land at 2258, just ahead of curfew. VH-VYI is the 'just made it' B738.

UPDATE: The delayed QF25 from SYD to HND, formed by the diverted via MEL QF28 ex SCL arrival, took off on the knocker at 2300 hours. Arrival should be 50 minutes late on Thursday 23 March in HND at 0550 hours. It is most unusual for QF25 to depart SYD late but tonight this was unavoidable. These diversions due to weather must make employees in the operations centre have an even more stressful time, although they've doubtless seen most things before.

QF3 departed at 2221 hours, a little earlier than the amended time above suggested.

Thursday 23 March has QF24, the overnight from BKK to SYD with A333 VH-QPG arriving at 0755, half an hour behind.

QF12 from LAX (B744 VH-OJU) is arriving 52 late at 0822 in SYD.

B744 VH-OJT on QF128, the Wednesday night 1950 hours from HKG down to SYD took off at 2129. On Thursday 23 March, it should pull in to its designated SYD gate at roughly 0903, 68 minutes tardy.

The 0845 hours SYD MEL QF461 has been cancelled.

A388 VH-OQE on QF2 arrived DXB ex LHR at 0730 hours on Thursday 23 March, 15 minutes early. However instead of departing at 0935 hours, it is showing as delayed until 1100: as at 1105, it did not appear to have commenced pushback. On Friday 24 March it will therefore arrive SYD at 0755, 85 minutes late, or perhaps later if its pushback and takeoff is further delayed from DXB.

QF35 (1220 hours MEL - SIN) did not depart until 1504 this afternoon, so arrival is not likely until about 1925, two hours late. QF36 back from SIN, the 1935 hours is instead displaying as departing at 2035 with Friday 24 March arrival suggested as 0705 hours, still 50 minutes late.

UPDATE: The delay to VH-OQE on QF2 in DXB has become much longer, with a new amended departure time of 1315, 220 minutes late. Friday 24 March arrival is expected at 0950 instead of 0640 hours, 200 minutes late. If the DXB delay continues much longer, the flight crew may run out of hours that would presumably mean an extended stay in DXB for passengers (and crew.) However, that has not yet happened.

Oh dear.

It's rarely good to suggest 'I told you so' but above I mentioned about the QF2 DXB - SYD crew potentially running out of hours.

It must have occurred, because the Friday 24 March QF2 arrival at 0630 in SYD has now become an 1105 hours predicted departure ex DXB on Friday morning with consequent forecast arrival in SYD at 0800 hours on Saturday 25, which will be 25 and a half hours late - or to express it in FlightStats' website's terms, 1530 minutes late if my maths is on the ball.

Presumably one of QF1, QF7 or QF11 is delayed badly on Friday (overnight) due to the unavailability of a spare A388 aircraft to substitute for the marooned VH-OQE that is sitting in DXB.

A388 VH-OQJ is still in MNL as far as I know undergoing the usual maintenance that is scheduled in all but the busiest months of the year, one A388 at a time.

...QF11 Friday is now a 747

Thank you milehighclub.

Advice from passengers stuck in DXB as to what if any hotel they have been placed in would be good, and the efficiency of those arrangements. Were some transferred to QF10, or EK DXB - SYD flights?

If QF11 was booked beyond the capacity of the B744, what happens to excess passengers? Are they placed on AA72 from SYD to LAX?

QF73 from SYD to SFO appears not to be operating today (Friday 24 March), thus freeing up a B744. Is this a cancellation or was it never timetabled to operate today?

The 0630 hours SYD - MEL, QF405, was cancelled on 24 March. QF411 on the same route (A332 VH-EBK) should arrive half an hour late at 0935. QF407 (B738 VH-VXT), the 0715 hours departure took off at 0819 with arrival suggested as 0931 hours, 41 late in MEL.

In further delays on Friday 24 March, QF1529 (0840 hours CBR - MEL that was airborne at 0926) should arrive at roughly 1033, 43 minutes late with B717 VH-YQV.

QF2002, the 0845 hours SYD - TMW was cancelled. QF1555, thye 1130 hours SYD to ADL is also cancelled.

B738 VH-XZP on QF417 (0830 hours SYD down to MEL) did not take off until 0954 hours, with arrival at 1119 hours, 74 minutes late.

Medium length flight QF81 from SYD to SIN, the 1115 hours, is instead expected to depart an hour late but SIN arrival is estimated only 20 minutes late at 1650.

Continuing with Friday 24 March 2017, QF621 (1255 BNE to MEL that took off at 1322) should arrive 33 minutes behind at 1648: B738 VH-VXP is the aircraft.

The BDB - BNE QF2329 (Q300 VH-SBJ) is timetabled to depart at 1445 but on 24 March was airborne at 1524 with predicted arrival of 1618 making it 38 minutes behind schedule.

B717 VH-YQW on QF1584 (the 1555 hours HBA up to SYD that took off at 1629) should arrive 35 minutes tardy at 1820 early this evening.
