Qantas Delays/Cancellations

There has been quite a lot of late running on Tuesday 7 May 2019.

Did CBR have fog? QF1509 (B717 VH-YQW, the 0640 hours SYD down to CBR) did not take off until 0857, arriving 139 minutes late at 0954 hours.

After returning from CBR, VH-YQW operated the scheduled 1030 hours midmorning SYD - MCY that pushed back at 1151 hours, arriving at 1323 hours, 78 late.

QF1463, the 0740 hours SYD - CBR was 38 minutes late departing with VH-QOT, arriving in the national capital at 0918, 43 late.

QF1564, the 0945 hours SYD up to HTI also pushed back 38 late, arriving at the island paradise at 1142 hours, 32 minutes tardy.

Making three, QF485 (0935 hours MEL - PER) was also 38 minutes behind in having blocks removed, arriving in the WA capital at 1219 hours, 34 late.

QF143, the 0930 hours SYD across to AKL had A332 VH-EBQ, departing 40 late but arriving at 1509 hours, 34 late.

The 1630 hours afternoon SYD down to MEL, QF449, has been cancelled.

Also on Tuesday 7 May 2019, B738 VH-VYD is operating an empty transfer from MEL (depart 1835 hours) to SYD.

Monday 6 saw QF94 (A388) depart LAX at 2330 hours, 50 late, so Wednesday 8 estimated MEL arrival is 0808, 38 late.

On Wednesday 8 May, QF56 from LAX to BNE is expected to arrive at 0530, half an hour late.

The Q300 currently stuck in Bendigo (BXG) for 44 hours now is scheduled to return to Sydney empty this evening. It will operate as QF6710 (QLK710) departing BXG at 2015, arriving in SYD at 2205.

Unsure of the impacts to the QLK schedule today as a result of the plane being out of service.
It finally flew out last night at 21:18 and made it back to YSSY just before the curfew...

It finally flew out last night at 21:18 and made it back to YSSY just before the curfew...

This aircraft, Q300 VH-TQH, looks to be on QF2020, the Wednesday 8 May 0820 hours SYD - ARM. but as at 0907 hours may not yet have departed. The QF website is showing a 'delayed' departure at 0855 but that time has passed, so the aircraft will be at least 45 minutes late into the Northern Tablelands university city.

UPDATE: The delay to QF2020 has extended to 1015 hours ex SYD.

QF79 from MEL to NRT departed 39 late at 0949 with estimated arrival becoming 1906 hours tonight, 31 late.

FURTHER UPDATE: QF2020 departed SYD at 1029 with ARM arrival suggested as 1206 hours, 146 minutes behind schedule. However VH-SBJ (also a Q300) is operating the flight, not VH-TQH. SBJ did not become airborne until 1059, taking half an hour from moving from its stand to pointing skywards, quite a long time.

Also on 8 May, the lunchtime 1210 hours SYD - PEK (QF107) is forecast to depart half an hour late.

Earlier, QF1509, the 0645 hours SYD - CBR did not depart until 0832, arriving at 0946, 126 late. While delays or cancellations do not occur on every flight, these annoyances on this route are well known and occur sufficiently for many who can to have abandoned flying and instead between these two cities drive or use Murrays/Greyhound buses (yik!) or the comfortable, though not fast NSW TrainLink XPlorer railcars.

Although on Tuesday 7, the crosscountry USA QF11 arrived JFK gate at 1631, nine minutes early, 'the 12' did not depart until 1844, 34 late. Expected LAX arrival is 2145 hours, 45 late. This may at least marginally delay the three Oz east coast bound QF12, QF16 and QF94.

On Wednesday 8, QF581 (A332 VH-EBK), the 1025 hours SYD - PER did not become airborne until 1142, so arrival is delayed until a projected 1413 hours, 43 late.

B717 VH-NXJ on QF1568 from SYD tyo OOLO is similar, with this 1115 hours flight airborne 61 minutes later. Hence arrival has become 1325 hours, 45 late.

However VH-SBJ (also a Q300) is operating the flight, not VH-TQH.

Was thinking there may have been additional issues with this plane but it did operate a SYD - CBR return this afternoon so looks like it's back to normal for VH-TQH.

EDIT: It also operated QF1407 SYD - BXG this evening. Welcome home? :)

Tuesday 7 May saw QF2, the 2105 hours LHR - SIN depart just two minutes late but on Wednesday 8, arrival is estimated as half an hour behind at 1755, making it challenging to depart Lion City on time at 1930 local for the redeye down to SYD.

On Wednesday 8, QF492, the 2030 hours evening MEL - SYD has been cancelled.

Here I am almost nodding off in Jakarta’s PP lounge waiting for my QF42 flight to Sydney when my phone beeps. “Qantas”, “Sydney” and “cancelled “ were the only words that registered and I thought oh no...

As it turn out it’s just my SYD - MEL QF413 flight that is cancelled tomorrow morning

QF44, the overnight DPS - SYD is arriving at 0848 hours, 143 minutes late on Thursday 9 May with A333 VH-QPC. Last night on QF43 ex SYD, it was airborne at 2004 despite a 1730 timetabled pushback. The plane had been in SYD since yesterday afternoon at 1236 hours. Its unpunctuality is expected to delay the Thursday QF129 (0930 hours SYD - PVG) by 65 minutes in pushing back.

Wednesday 8 May's QF2 departed LHR at 2137, 32 minutes late so SIN arrival should be at 1818 tonight, 53 late. This makes departing on time at 1930 for the final sector down overnight to SYD challenging. The best observed intermediate stop for an A380 that involves passengers alighting and boarding is around 85 minutes.

UPDATE: QF129 managed to push back at 1037, 67 late with anticipated PVG arrival 1900 hours tonight, 35 late.

QF422, the 1000 hours MEL - SYD was cancelled. In the opposite direction, QF448, the 1630 hours ex SYD has also got the boot.

In further on Thursday 9 May 2019, QF63 (1055 hours B744 SYD across teh kilometres to JNB) departed 35 late with arrival suggested as 1744, 44 late. This will at least slightly delay the returning QF64.

Technically not a delay or a cancellation but it looks like tonight's QF1407 SYD - BXG (and the returning QF1408 tomorrow morning) has been downgraded to a Dash 8 Q200.

Load on these flights was fairly light - I wonder if this was due to pax numbers or another reason.

In further on Thursday 9 May, QF1, the 1555 hours flagship from SYD to SIN and LHR is expected to depart 185 late at 1900 sharp tonight. SIN arrival on Friday 10 should be at 0105 hours instead of 2215 tonight - 170 minutes tardy.

QF791 (B738 VH-VXO, the 1300 hours lunchtime ASP across to SYD) departed at 1409, taking off quickly at 1414 with slated arrival 1712, 57 late. This flight often forms QF453, the 1700 hours SYD - MEL but it is not today.

QF2030, the mid afternoon SYD up to ARM is delayed to an expected 1620 hours departure with arrival likely 50 late at 1745 hours.

QF552, the 1615 hours SYD - BNE has been cancelled.

Also on 9 May 2019, QF571 (B738 VH-VZB, the 1735 hours late afternoon SYD across to PER) was airborne at a delayed 1934 so forecast arrival has become 2113 hours, 33 late.

In further on Thursday 9 May, QF1, the 1555 hours flagship from SYD to SIN and LHR is expected to depart 185 late at 1900 sharp tonight. SIN arrival on Friday 10 should be at 0105 hours instead of 2215 tonight - 170 minutes tardy...

Oh dear. QF1 has been further delayed to an expected 2230 hours ex SYD, 395 minutes late.

This is always a worry as curfew may be missed. QF expects the SIN stop to change to 0435 to 0600 (yuk!) on Friday 10 with LHR arrival at lunchtime (1235, 370 minutes late.)

Although it's counterintuitive, Friday mornings at MEL often seems worse than Monday mornings for aircraft being placed in holds.

Pretty much whenever this occurs, the hour between 0901 and 1000 seems worst. Again, one might expect 0801 to 0900 to be worse.

Friday 10 May is living up to this with QF674, the 0635 hours ADL - MEL airborne at 0659 (about 15 late) likely to arrive at 0856, 31 late after holding above Bendigo for some time. Aircraft is B738 VH-VHG.

QF409 (0700 hours SYD - MEL) in the sky about 20 late at 0735 (B738 VH-VXQ) is arriving at 0908, 33 late after holding near Mt Buller, the usual waypoint for this.

The MEL down to DPO QF2051 has Q400 VH-QON and is the 0810 hours airborne at 0855. Arrival is delayed to an expected 0949 hours, 34 late.

Also on Friday 10 May, QF23, the 0950 hours SYD - BKK, departed at 1010 with arrival suggested 45 late at 1725 hours. The 1810 hours redeye back down to SYD, QF24 will be delayed in its pushing back.

Earlier, the 0910 hours MEL - NRT (QF79) was 43 late pushing back, so its arrival is an estimated 1927 hours, 52 late. Due to this, QF62 (1955 hours redeye NRT down to BNE) is predicted to depart 35 late tonight.

QF81, the 1010 hours SYD - SIN was 46 late off blocks so arrival has become half an hour behind at 1720 hours in Lion City.

QF851 on 10 May, the lunchtime 1330 hours CBR down to MEL (B738 VH-VZV) took off at 1422 so arrival has become 1532, 52 late.

B744 VH-OJU on the long distance QF64 (JNB overnight to SYD) should arrive on Friday at about 1603 hours, 68 late.

QF1 on Thursday 9 May departed SYD at 2225 hours (390 late). The SIN stop on Friday 10 was from 0451 (386 late) to 0626 hours (391 late) with LHR arrival estimated today as 1310 hours (405 late). Not a great flight if one was waiting in Singapore.

On Friday 10, QF812 (B738 VH-VXB), the 1315 hours lunchtime MEL - CBR did not take off until 1515 on a sometimes rainy and windy Melbourne day. Arrival looks to be 1605 hours, 105 minutes tardy.

Tonight's QF1 is also delayed (from 1555 to a predicted 2000 hours ex SYD, so 245 late). The SIN stop is estimated at this stage as 0225 to 0350 on Saturday 11 with London Heathrow at gate arrival 1025 hours, 240 late - an even four hours down.

Is 'the 1' delayed today because of the requirement for the flight crew ex 'the 1' yesterday to have a mandated minimum rest period in Singapore? While aviation like many transport subsectors is a 24 hour operation, I can't imagine signing on at around 0250 for an 0350 hours ex SIN would be the first choice staff would make. Surely with such variable hours in quick succession one would be very close to constantly tired.

Later on Friday 10 May, QF446 (B738 VH-VZC, the 1600 hours MEL up to SYD) did not become airborne until 1733, so predicted at gate on blocks time is 1842, 77 late.

The 1610 hours MEL - BNE, QF626, is similar, taking off at 1741. VH-VZE looks to be arriving at about 1940, 80 minutes behind the timetable.

QF826 (1620 hours MEL relatively short flight to CBR, B738 VH-VYL) was up up and away at 1730, so arrival is put back to a predicted 1819 hours, 54 late.

Southbound QF855 (VH-VXB, the mid afternoon 1500 hours CBR - MEL airborne at 1701) should arrive at 1800 hours, 110 late.

Continuing with Friday 10 May, QF37, the 1615 hours afternoon option from MEL up to SIN departed at 1712 with arrival delayed until a predicted 2320 late tonight, 55 late. A332 VH-EBJ has the task.

Timewise, 'the 9' (MEL - PER) is usually pretty good but today was another exception, with departure at 1628 hours being 73 minutes tardy. PER arrival should shortly occur at 1847 hours, 92 late and after the 1845 scheduled pushback for the long trip to LHR, which should now occur at 2010 tonight Perth time. Saturday 11 LHR arrival is estimated as 0635, 90 behind.

QF450 (B738 VH-XZO, the 1830 hours early evening MEL - SYD) took off at 2010, so arrival should be at 2119 hours, 84 late. QF464, the 1930 hours has larger A332 VH-EBA and was in the sky at 2021 so at gate arrival should be 2129, 34 minutes behind the timetable. Southbound QF465, the 1900 hours scheduled ex SYD did not take off until 2008. VH-VZA should arrive at its MEL gate at 2124 hours, 49 minutes tardy. QF479, another SYD to MEL (the 1845 hours) was airborne at 2018 hours so its at gate arrival is estimated as 2133 mid evening, 73 late for VH-VYC.

The 1850 hours CBR down to MEL on Friday 10, QF833, was in the sky at 2004 with Vh-VYK suggested as arriving at 2102, 62 minutes past the timetable.

A388 VH-OQB (1555 hours QF1 SYD - SIN - LHR) pushed back later than expected, at 2035 and at 2048 was still taxiing in SYD so is likely to be later into SIN that estimated above by QF. This will also adversely affect the SIN - LHR timings.

The PER - MEL QF10 arrived on Friday 10 at 1929 hours, 34 late. It's often early or punctual.

UPDATE: QF1's estimated stay in SIN is (Saturday 11 May) from 0246 to 0415 with changed LHR arrival at 1045, 260 minutes tardy. This is 20 minutes later than QF had originally estimated in post #10278 above.
