Qantas Delays/Cancellations

QF says that the delayed QF15 (Wednesday 6 December) will be at LAX at 0945 hours, 225 minutes late. QF11 from LAX across to JFK is allegedly to depart at 1220, 240 minutes tardy. JFK arrival should be at 2035, 245 late.

On some other occasions when QF15 is this late and the same B744 is rostered for the transcon USA QF11/ QF12, QF has cancelled 'the 11' and 'the 12' and used AA flights in both directions to convey passengers.

It may be that loadings pre-Christmas on USA domestic flights across that nation are heavy, or perhaps crew positioning influences the apparent decision to 'keep it going' in a few hours time.

VH-OEE still has not operated another flight ex LAX if FR24 is correct.

So they have. Return QF12 to LAX is also delayed, but not onward to SYD. They have not pushed back QF16 either, yet at least. Perhaps they expect -OEE to be ready to go by then, so QF16 departs on time Wednesday night. Followed by running QF12D onward to Sydney very early Thursday morning, as an extra flight to recover the aircraft back in to the rotation. Or empty if the cabin crew isn't available.

A good summary and hypothesis, Must....Fly!

What's missing is an indication from a technically minded AFF member as to how challenging repair of VH-OEE's APU is likely to be.

From observation, it is pretty rare for aircraft involved in 'minor' incidents or occurrences to be inoperable for more than a couple of days. Although some will have been fully depreciated if an airline owns them, they remain high value transport assets and on top of that the peak Christmas travel period is upon us. QF begins its thrice weekly seasonal SYD - YVR flights very soon.

noticed VH-OEE just departed LAX 6 Dec 0115 as QF6021.
wondering if any paying passengers onboard as 60xx flight numbers often used for positioning flights.

Well there you go. My theory out the window, more adjustments to come for QF16 then if QF11/12 on to JFK is to actually operate. QF probably need it ready to go before YVR starts up on Saturday as pointed out by M1

Yes, the QF60XX flight numbers are either empty ('ferry') flights or specials (as in 'charters' for Exclusive Brethren, the Captain's Choice - Phil Asker - tours or similar.) The third use is to position for planned maintenance (also a 'ferry' flight) that in the case of (say) the A388s occurs at Lufthansa Techniik, MNL.

My guess is that save for crew, the flight is empty but it would be good to have that confirmed.

VH-OEE is estimated to arrive in SYD at 1100 on Thursday 7 December.

QF136 on Wednesday 6 (B744 VH-OEF) arrived at 2011 hours, 126 minutes late as earlier, QF143, the 1015 hours SYD - AKL had not become airborne until 1245 hours. This was after the B744 was only about 10 minutes late on the inbound QF74 this morning ex SFO, pulling in at about 0617 hours.

On the topic of Manila, VH-OQL returned this morning for the holiday rush after a solid 7 weeks on the ground in the Philippines.

Isn't that lengthy Must...Fly!? I thought it was usually four or five weeks for the A388 checks undertaken in MNL. Is it becoming longer as the A388s age, despite VH-OQL only about to have its sixth birthday on 16 December 2017?

I am only guessing, but I suspect a 3C check at 6 years. Involves stripping the cabin, engine pylons, amongst a thousand other things. But I think it stops short of a full strip down. I'm sure jb747 could provide a detailed answer.

How does Qantas advise if this is the case?
Currently due to fly QF12 out of JFK tonight

Wednesday 6 December's QF11 managed to depart LAX at 1217 hours, three minutes earlier than QF had predicted with JFK arrival suggested at 2005, 215 minutes late. 'The 12' is then to depart JFK at 2130 - too optimistic from previous occurrences of delayed flights into and out of this airport - with LAX arrival on Thursday 7 at 0030, 185 minutes late.

QF12 from LAX to SYD and QF94 to MEL are displaying as estimated punctual departures, which does not make sense unless everyone connecting to SYD or MEL stayed on the ex-JFK QF12 B744 if it then operated QF16. The latter is estimated to depart LAX at 0240 hours for a Friday 8 BNE arrival at 1040 hours, 205 minutes delayed.

In turn this will probably delay QF15, the Friday 8 1120 hours BNE - LAX.

On Thursday 7 December, QF419 (0830 hours from SYD down to MEL, A332 VH-EBQ) did not take off until 0936, so arrival is suggested at 1049 hours, 44 minutes tardy.

QF29 (0945 hours morning MEL - HKG) is expected to depart at the unusual time of 1103. This may be an ATC 'controlled departures' time as QF left to its own devices usually specifies a time to the nearest five minutes. Arrival is predicted for 1738, 83 late so if any passengers are connecting they may need to be rebooked. The aircraft looks to be A333 VH-QPD that arrived 31 early at 0729 this morning on QF80 ex NRT.

UPDATE: QF29 departed earlier - at 1024 - than QF had advised so arrival has advanced to 1636 hours, 21 minutes late, which if it holds is good news for connecting passengers.

Hi Mel1,
we were on a similarly delayed QF12 JFK-LAX a while back.
We were told quite early, even before going to JFK if I recall correctly, that we would not be on QF94 that night, but would get a connection in Oz. We saw 94 taxiing as we arrived at LAX. That time the same aircraft operated QF12 JFK-LAX-SYD.

BTW - the delayed QF11 looks like it is diverting to DFW.

Looks like the Wednesday QF11 from LAX spent from 1740 hours to 1852 in DFW with JFK arrival suggested as 2359 hours, 324 minutes late. A long night indeed for QF12 passengers ex JFK!
