QANTAS Cyber Incident

I’m shocked. shocked I tell you! That may go down as the most redundant announcement she’ll ever make.

It wasn't an announcement. She was asked.

As far as I can tell, no Australian company has ever proactively offered compensation after a data breach. So no, it's not a surprise. I never expected it.

Try Telstra, they are due soon.
Due what?

They only offer a basic 'Device Security Essentials' VPN-ish thing via their app - Welcome an extra layer of protection to your mobile - Telstra

Device Security Essentials, powered by McAfee, includes three free security features that can be activated through the My Telstra app. They work together to help protect your device, data and personal info from the latest malware and cyber threats.

This does nothing to actually monitoring your credit file for any enquiries.

Can also vouch for Truyu (Truyu - a side project from CommBank Truyu - CommBank), it currently sends notifications when your documents are used for a DVS check (eg, signing up for a phone service - including prepaid, or verifying your identity with a bank) especially for things that aren't necessarily 'credit' - eg I've had alerts about my ID being used at Australia Post, National Australia Bank, AMP Bank, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone over the past year (where I've used my driver licence or Medicare card), without applying for credit so none of them appear on my Equifax, Illion or Experian credit files.

But it won't capture everything;

I got an e-mail from Truyu today about an update to their T&Cs (Terms and Conditions - Truyu) - they're adding support for Experian alerts too. (no Equifax love, sadly)

3 month free trial, then $4.99/month, paid in the app (so you can make use of all of those discounted / bonus points on Apple Gift Cards), month to month, cancel as you need.

(not a paid ad, just not many people have heard of Truyu before)
Looks like Truyu has added that Experian credit file monitoring in the last week - had to reverify my identity - it is funny getting a notification from Truyu about Truyu doing a DVS check! - but now we'll see if I get notified about any credit enquiries.

That probably explains why it dropped out of Wisr (without any warning or notice AFAIK).

Opened Wisr the other day and was surprised at it disappearing. Not where I thought I would find out 'why', but it's much appreciated :)

Surprised there was no punishment for the High Court decision on the outsourcing. Qantas may have thought they did nothing wrong but the law certainly ascertained they had.

That may not have been in the financial year that was being reported on.

Ok, just putting it out there (via this forum). Since the Qantas cyber 'incident' my email account has been inundated with cough spam. I know it's difficult to trace where this originated but I think it no coincidence that this started happening not long after Qantas was hacked. Yes, most of the emails are sent to the spam folder but, geez, literally hundreds of these messages arrive into my account each day.
Anyone else encountering this since the Qantas incident?
Nothing on that scale for me and certainly not that particular type of spam. In fact, no real noticeable spam increase for me since the Qantas breach.

Might be worth checking your email via Have I Been Pwned to see if you've been caught out in any other recent data breaches.

Zero cough. About the same volume, give or take, as before; mainly "you have been selected for free......" and "you have new my gov message"

Very likely to be a coincidence.

Think it through rationally - why would a criminal socially engineer the Qantas call centre to obtain a large cache of much more sensitive information (email address was arguably the least sensitive information breached) just to sign you up to cough spam?

If/when the QFF database hits the darkweb, then it would be more plausible. But until then, there's practically zero chance someone is using this valuable information for such a useless purpose.

No real change in the level of spam I get. Stacks of it.
It does go through waves of different things. Lots of online casino bonus stuff last couple ofdays

No stats, but more recently I seem to be getting less.
I was typically checking and clearing maybe 8-10 a week from the spam folder, but last few weeks it has been 1 or 2.
Maybe the gmail filters are even better than before.

The email address I use for QFF (still), I’ve had for years and has generally been spam free (possibly thanks to a .au version of one of the OL service providers).

No spam at all since the breach.

It was also the email I had for Optus and the Medibank (TI) breaches.

The QF website states that as far as they are aware, the hacked data hasn’t been released (they would have engaged one or more expects monitoring the dark crevices of the web etc). I’m sure many here will doubt that due to the lack of trust with QF. Can’t argue with that but currently no noticeable uptick in spam, dodgy phone calls etc But still pays to be extra vigilant.

why do hackers steal data from companies?

maybe malice in which they’ll completely screw up the targets data, or for ransom to get money.

Its illegal for a Australian company to pay bribes Overseas; is it illegal for an Australian company to pay a ransom?
