QANTAS Cyber Incident

I have a free credit report block in place (easy, a they all inform the other 2 ..) -after this breach, but should have done it before as I'm no longer seeking credit). Will it always be renew in 21 days, r is there a permanent, until advised, option?

What's paid credit monitoring do?

I agree, there should be a permanent option. Or better yet, by default everyone’s credit report it blocked. You then notify the credit agencies you intend to apply for credit and they unblock it for a day or two.

Or every time there is a credit check, they contact you for verification before the respond to the requester. Yes, it might slow down the application for credit process, but that is not necessarily a bad thing given the risks of providing credit to the wrong person.

After my identity got stolen a few years ago, I got a subscription to Equifax and kept it permanently. The peace of mind is worth every penny

Now, you can find out who may be applying for credit as it happens, not afterwards

Worth it, do it.

Question: there are a few credit report agency in Australia right, not just equifax. From memory Experian and Illiin. Why is the focus on equifax? What if the credit providers is hitting experian instead? Do we need to have a subscriptiins / blocks on all of them?

Equifax is the primary one (originally called Veda before being bought out by Equifax some years ago) used by the Big 4 and most other lenders.

You can signup for free access to Illion and Experian reports through Check Your Free Credit Score & Credit Report - ClearScore, AU

I monitor all 3 (paid with Equifax and free through clearscore) and there are some differences between what each has recorded against me. Equifax has the most comprehensive summary and the other 2 do not have anything about me that Equifax doesn't have (if that makes sense!)

On the subject of blocking, you just need to initiate a block through one, and can optionally request them to pass the block to the others.

The report will be valid for the first 21 days and as long as you make a request to extend it before it expires you can have it be for a full 12 months.

Paid credit monitoring gives you access to monthly reports of your credit profile but more importantly it will send you an email if any hit happens on your record. This is a way to protect yourself against someone else using your information to setup lines of credit. It will give you the way to raise an objection to the attempt and protect your financial situation.
There is other functions available like "dark web monitoring" and other use of your PII in places.

Without paid monitoring you only know about instances of hits against your credit report long after it's an issue or when you manually request full reports.

Not sure if anyone else has encountered this yet, but I've started receiving text messages from Qantas (three thus far) with the security code for accessing my FF account - when I haven't logged in. Yes, that means the two-step authentication is working but worrying nonetheless

Sounds like someone is trying to break into your account. I've had similar with a couple of bank accounts and this prompted me to immediately change my passwords.

Don't know if I missed it up thread, but apparently VH used ChatGPT to run up her letters/emails to us all. Just adds to the personal touch from the illustrious CEO.

Something tells me that it wouldn’t really matter how the letters were initially drafted as the Legal/Quality department would have had a heavy hand in editing it into a final version that we all received.

Yes, I don't think it has been. Here's the original report for anyone interested:

Still, how hard would it be for an organisation of Qantas' size to have their copy drafted and edited by real people for such a major PR blunder?

But QF never have PR blunders, so why would they need such people on staff...

I hear you, but honestly… I don’t think it’s going to make people feel any better/worse about the whole thing. 🤷‍♂️

However it was produced, it was always going to seek to minimise the perceived severity, (attempt to) reassure customers and provide basic guidance. And we would all be as cynical about it as we already are.

no, but it just brings on continuing bemusement.

They couldn't punctuate a letter without putting it through AI? 🐫 They only had to google.
