Now that the excellent, award winning, passenger friendly Jetstar is flying to the Philippines via Singapore, I fear for the future of the Qantas service to Manila.

Maybe Qantas are already grooming their J passengers. The Qantas muesli and danish breakfasts will certainly make Deathstar easy to switch to.

Effective Monday 11 DEC 2006, Australian Airlines crew will begin operating flights from SYD/BNE-MNL.

JQ from Australia-Manila is one of those rumours that has been around for sometime, but nothing has yet materialised.

Shame the 747-300 isn't flying the route anymore - but that's another story in itself.

Cheers

I guess you are really saying the only realistic alternative will be flying CX to the Philippines via Hong Kong.

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

Or SQ via SIN or TG via BKK.

So this leg is now downgraded further :(

Forgive my ignorance but I thought Australian Airlines was dead and buried, and what does this mean in terms of SC and service (or lack thereof)

Nothing for the pax. Just the crew are being paid less.

If the service is operating with old AO crew that simply means it will be a QF 767-300 fitted with old dreamtime seats and no different to the current service. The last time i trevlled to MNL on a 747 was a number of years ago and to say it was lightly loaded was an understatment. The 767 seems a better fit for the current demand, although MNL seems to fit the jetstar MO..ie a market that isnt high yield and presumably not a big money earner

Paying the staff less will no doubt make them happy then:rolleyes:

Last time I did that run the QF staff were cr*p anyway, so it will be interesting to see the difference.

Cheers

They no longer fly their own routes under the AO flight number and branding. They remain as an operating entity similar to Jet Connect, operating flights for Qantas under the Qantas branding. It seems to be a way of retaining the AO staff under their current employment contracts without having to move them into direct QF employment.

Well it is different staff - not as highly paid ones. Sorry for the confusion.

It goes back to the days of the old QF/AN duoply where the financial "cake" was quite large and the parties involved (Company, Pilots, FA's Ground crew etc.) ensured they all had reasonably big slices of it.

Interestingly enough, AO staff have a reputation for generally providing a far more attentive and better in flight service that their QF conterparts.

Or PR who do the MNL-MEL-SYD-MNL triangle (although is PR a realistic alternative??)

If you're not going from SYD, eg from MEL, SQ & CX are fairly close in terms of time for getting to MNL and, well you get to spend your time in either SIN or HKG rather than wasting it catching the b*s in SYD .... and I would take either in preference to the QF flight (which I have done once in J, not impressed).

I was referring to realistic OneWorld alternatives, unless Qantas downgrades most routes.

The only OW airlines flying to Manila are QF and CX. But they are hardly the only (or even the best) choices.

Thanks for that, makes me happier it may be a more enjoyable bus trip than last time, mind, I must have just got a crew on a particularly bad day, they were probably the most sour I have come across.

That wouldn't be hard. Well trained monkeys could do better than some of the QF boilers.

(or should that be poorly trained monkeys...?)

Actually it would be better to quote "Well Trained/Experienced professionals".

There was a large pool of experienced people available in OZ when AO started up (remember Ansett) and they were able to snaffle some of the best. I'm sure the selection criteria used did not extend to "... Boilers" of any type. ;)
