After patiently waiting for Qantas to cancel my December flight to South America, I received an email over the weekend that my flights have been cancelled and converted to a credit voucher. To my disappointment though, as my flight was booked way back in February, and the departure date is in December 2020, my credit voucher is subject to the following conditions:
- Expiry date is 24 February 2021
- Cannot be used for multiple bookings

Given that the credit is for well over AU$3K, I will not be able to use it for any domestic flight. It is also extremely unlikely that international flights will be resumed before February. This means my credit voucher is next to useless.

Has anyone else had experience with this? Is there any point keeping this as a credit voucher for now, hoping that the longer expiry and multiple bookings will also be extended to flights departing after 31 October 2020?

It seems very short sighted of Qantas, basically I am given no option but to request a refund, given that I will never be able to use this credit voucher under the given conditions. I would have thought they'd prefer to keep your money.

I'm also in a similar position:
- flight was booked in February 2020 for travel in December 2020
- received an email over the weekend that my flight has been cancelled and converted to a credit voucher
- called Qantas (on hold for 1.5 hours) to request for a refund but was offered a Qantas Travel Pass with either 10% extra credits, double status credits or double points
- Qantas Travel Pass valid for multiple bookings until December 2022

Interesting. I specifically asked about the travel pass and was told that while I can apply for it, its validity will still be until 24 Feb 2021 only.

@aweingar you probably talked to someone that didn't have enough training.

1. TravelPass can be used for multiple booking, as stated in the condition web page: Qantas TravelPass | Qantas

2. All reports I can remember of had their validity up to end 2022. Nice to see that @AIRwin got a bit more :)

If you have the patience, you could call and try again. Note that when you opt-in, you should be given 48h to change your mind. That was both explained to me on the phone, and on the opt-in email. The travel pass itself is issued a bit later (up to three weeks). I got mine today, and I opted in about 3 weeks ago.

Apologies, mine is also valid until December 2022 and I've amended my original post accordingly.

I will try calling again. Although when I think about the 2-hour wait on the line...

I had the same thing. They were great. Immediately offered choice of refund or extension of credit with additional 10% value. All done in 2 minutes. I presume thats available to everyone, not just Platinum.

I took the 5k refund....

I’m in the same boat - NZ flights cancelled into a regular credit with only a few months till expiry and no flexibility. Good to know that it should be possible to convert to the travel pass or request a refund.

Managed to get through to Qantas at 1am last night after waiting on the line for "only" 40 minutes.
They agreed to convert my useless credit voucher to a travel pass, with validity until the end of 2022. Although it does take some time to convert - hopefully they won't change their mind in the meantime.
