Qantas Cancels 787-9 order

The big test of whether the 767s will be around a long time is whether the wings get refurbished. If winglets go on, you know they'll be here for the long haul.

I'm not really buying the saving capital thing, due to the 81 A320 family aircraft arriving 2014-19. Presumably they are there because of fuel efficiency, so why not more efficient 787s. Suggests they're picking winners and losers to me. Not surprised by this, just saying.

And now reading the fuel costs are a major problem for QFi.

16 of the 22 are being refurbished and those will continue with mainline if I am correct.

The CEO presentation this morning explicitly states the 767s will be retired when the A330s return from Jetstar (see paragraph 2 and 3 on the second page)

Writing is on the wall - jumping ship (carrier) to AA membership. When your customers are already complaining about substandard product and service offering, and on top of that a cancellation/deferring aircraft orders. The 787 was a symbol for renewal and growth. Actions of the board are not inspiring hope of the company's future. The accountants shall re-JOYCE naturally but this relationship has become forlorn.

Why would accountants be rejoicing if the business is not performing? Have you met a competent accountant?

Seems a shame to now defer the much awaited 787 aircraft. If nothing else I'd hoped to see something other than A330's ply the local skies. Yes, Yes there will be some orange outfitted ones somewhere in SIN but for all we'll ever see of them they might as well be based on the moon. Sad day indeed for QF. I had vainly hoped we'd see 787s on the transcontinental.

Yes, quite a few, auditors on the other hand........, and dont get me started on consultants. I should disclose that I come from a family of accountants, although obviously I am not one.

This is the clearest signal yet that Qantas International is DEAD

As far as I am concerned the 787-9 is now cancelled for QF

Firm commitments cancelled
Options and purchase rights moved forward

So this means now that QF do not have to purchase any 787-9s

Options and purchase rights means nothing

Sad, but expected times.

Good job you're not in QF fleet purchasing then. If options and purchase rights meant nothing they would not exist.

This way at least QF have the potential to react dependent on how the global economy moves. China is slowing, Europe is crumbling, the US seems to not be as terminal as once feared. Would you rather QF commit to capital and debt that it may not be able to maintain and then fail or would you rather QF had a healthy balance sheet not weighed down with debt that has the option to react if we see a global recovery.

We really need to take the emotion out of this and face the facts. Those facts may not include QFi in the future but they could well.

Qantas have 23 767's and Jetstar only have 11 A330's. Are there more A330's awaiting delivery to Jetstar to replace this void?

I haven't had time to delve into the details, have they explained what they're doing to get QFi profitable again? I see nothing but cutting routes, which isn't exactly a good reason for customer to choose to fly QFi, and delaying new aircraft, which at least would have let them carry their rapidly diminishing customer base while using less fuel.

Are they expecting fuel to go down in price? VA, SQ et al. to just go away and let QF take its historic position in the Oz market?

Firstly, I would have purchased 777s years ago

Purchase rights mean nothing in terms of Qantas or any airline actually getting aircraft, they are not orders nor are counted as orders.

Qantas have cancelled the 787-9's and MAY purchase them in the future, but I highly doubt it, except for maybe JQ.

Fact is if QFi wanted 787-9s they would have kept the order or moved the order back, they have cancelled the order!

Qantas to be come the domestic arm, Jetstar to become International arm, thats my take on the future.

Exactly right!

Cutting routes
Cutting flights
Delaying aircraft

While all these measures CAN and does cut costs, it's not a good sign.

The 787-9's are dependent on QFi becoming profitable....

Simply not going to happen

There were never any plans for 787's for Qantas International anyway, they were going to domestic to replace the 767's. So really it hasn't changed the game for international one bit.

What is this, hindsight day? I bet you wouldn't have, if you (like everyone else at the time) believed Boeing's delivery schedule for the B787. At one stage the QF group had 85 firm orders and options on the books. They were (are?) the future of QF and JQ. Bad timing (but perhaps fortunate in a way, considering the way the economy is now).

Well purchase rights mean something otherwise Boeing wouldn't offer them.

More guessing. And for goodness sake they HAVE NOT CANCELLED THE ORDER!!! The effect of what has been announced today is to DELAY the delivery by 2 years to 2016. Exactly as you say if QF wants them - "moved the order back"
