I suspect this might be a PR exercise in having a dig at QF.

They may very well have rung Boeing but might have done so in the knowledge that the slots were already gone!

Very much so, as another article this weeks makes it clear that Virgin are in discussions with Boeing and Airbus about 787 and A350's respectivly and that a decision on which to purchase has not been made.

Of course it is!

Boeing would have know weeks/months ago that QF was going to cancel the order and they would have done the "ring around" to see who wants the slots

I give JB credit for having a nice little dig at QF though!

Not true. Options have a nominal position on the line hence why they can have dates. If that option is not exercised by a given date then that slot can go to someone else.

This was my understanding as well. An option reserves a place in the production schedule, but does so initially at less cost to the airline over a confirmed order. There will also be a date by which they have to commit to the option.

It was my reading of the media release that by structuring it the way they did, QF moved some of its slots from a confirmed order to an option (there may also have been some shuffling around but who knows at that level of detail!)

He likes playing with the media sometimes, doesn't he.

Last thing VA needs is more debt. If QF can't handle the capital raising, VA sure can't.

and he certainly wasn't going to add a new type to the fleet just "on the basis of a phone call"

They have been looking at the 787 for a while, even with the surge line now in place slots are taken until 2019, so there is not much hurry.
