Qantas Business Class meals & menus

You all sound like babies! “I can’t eat a meal unless it has meat in it!” Seriously? That is such an immature way to get around.
How about "If I am paying J class money on an Australian airline I expect to be provided with meat as a main course"? The vast majority of Australians (~95%) eat meat, if you do not and want a special meal then feel free to get one, but give the majority what they want.

100%

Dnata catering (out of BNE and other Aus ports) accommodates preordering by multiple airlines, a good example being SQ with Book the Cook.

It’s a matter of how much (or little) money QF is willing to pay their caterer.
Around $1.50 per meal I suggest. Gotta keep executive bonuses up.

Is it only a slight increase?

Because if it was, you would think even the dumbest MBA graduate should be executed if they didn't think it up as a good, immediately implementable idea. But here we are.

For the sake of making a tiny more amount of profit, why would someone ignore this idea and the capex (presumed small) required to bring it to life. (It's short-termism, you don't need to answer that)

We have already conceded that Qantas, in having no catering division owned by it in any capacity, already has an inherent difficulty in recreating the Select on Q experience it offered many years ago.

Frankly if I were GateGourmet or Dnata, if Qantas approached and said, "hey, we want specific meal preordering", I'd tell them either go jump or pay 100x the rate (or some other equally exhorbitant multiplier). No way I'd be giving something to the enemy to improve their position.

Barring that, this is a discrete cost and investment, which is worth it, but QF don't want to pay it (or they think they have time up their sleeves to not offer it before they have to, like most things). I think it seems we are the only people who think QF need to do this as a priority; most other people outside this forum sitting in the front just think it would be nice.
Companies want to make money and the catering companies actually want to keep airlines as their customers, otherwise they lose their business. They also invest a fair chunk of money in building these facilities, so actually want customers to cover the costs... Otherwise it's a non productive asset.

For example, I think GateGourmet even does the food for NSW Trains... They have built the capacity and then they sell it.

Using Dnata in Australia, they have local management, with performance targets... they are not turning down work because it "may assist" another airline. Dnata caters for many airlines other than Emirates. We have no actual evidence that the lack of owning a catering company is stopping pre-order for QF and the information we do have, indicates catering companies supply food for various airlines that aren't connected to their owners.

Ultimately, there are more airlines out there than catering companies...

Totally- it’s a rather silly argument to begin with. And as I’ve said before, American has offered this pre-order service Domestically for about two decades now and they own zero of the catering facilities at their outstations across the US.

Likewise, plenty airlines flying out of Australia offer the service and some of them actually do use DNATA. So the catering company ownership question is a total non-argument in my view!

MCY-SYD 12:05 departure, lunch flight. Choices were Chicken Balinese Curry with Jasmine Rice or Linguine with Prawns in cream sauce. Both were carb heavy options, light on protein. Came with a warm bread roll and koko black white chocolate (more carbs).

Had the pasta, its was quite dry; I was worried Balinese curry may contain coriander and not much of a chicken fan.

I completely forgot to take a photo of my dinner on QF255 Syd - Sin but it was the Humpty doo barramundi done "western style" with the putanesca sauce. Better than beef tbh.

As a vegetarian, I fully support my carnivorous brethren’s right to eat meat with every meal. Indeed, I would not dream of standing between a business-class passenger and their airborne beef.

I also agree, in principle, that vegetarians, vegans and passengers with other special meal requirements should pre-order. This works perfectly well on QR, EK, SQ and others.

With Qantas, however, pre-ordering comes with one important caveat: there is a high chance they simply will not load your meal, and will instead hope you have achieved a higher spiritual plane where hunger no longer troubles you.

My own strike rate for receiving a pre-ordered special meal on Qantas is less than 50% in business class, and a perfect 0/5 in First. An impressive level of consistency, really, just not in the direction one might hope.

So yes, I am eternally grateful for whatever plant-based morsels Qantas chooses to scatter through the regular menu.

Perhaps Qantas have been taking inspiration from The Simpsons? 🤣

Oh dear, toasties masquerading as appropriate J fare seem to be back.

Afternoon MEL-ADL flight. Toasted pastrami and cheese, or a cheese plate. With even more bread. (Does anyone in management — or better still, some common sense — actually think about what is being served?

$2 supermarket pastrami in bread. Wow.

It was fresh, and the jalapeno chutney on the side had a nice tang. Otherwise yet another terrible fail.

I wish all vegetarians or vegans would be as perfectly normal as you are. Way too many can’t stop themselves from preaching which I guess puts a bad rep on all of you!

I also must admit that I had no idea that the pre-ordered meals on Qantas are such a mess- simply because I’ve never been affected by this. Only on Domestic I hope or internationally too?

I flew QF Y cabin recently and both options were meat (beef or chicken)

If they do this in Y how come they can’t load a high percentage meat as the option in J or allow pre requests.

🤔
