Qantas Business Class meals & menus

This may be listed somewhere in the past pages but
are there specified starting and finishing times ( presumably based on origin airport) for meals ?

Hi all. I'm trying to see what the J meal options (and if I want to pre-order) on QF3 later this week. There doesn't seem to be an option to see the meals/choose when I log into my booking. Any ideas? Usually that's where you find the options.

@sudoer says it's not a thing any more 🙁 QANTAS need to put menu select back - it's more economical for QANTAS and more convenient for pax.

Hasn't been a thing for ages now. What I don't understand- of course, the likes of QR and SQ can do it, no one is surprised about this. But if American Airlines for all can offer a pre-order meal service on their Domestic services even (and have though for eternities in F/J), hell then Qantas should be able to do it too- no excuses!

Does it come down to bean counting and profit?
Is it significantly more expensive in their catering contracts to build in flexibility to for variance to meal choice quantities?

I imagine there would be flow on benefits from improved data and feedback on business traveller preferences, which could then be adapted for the lounges, because you get very strong data about what types of meals are/ aren't working for customers (assuming QF care about the customer lounge experience).

Or is it purely just down to inability / laziness with the I.T. side of things?

I think the implementation of Select on Q-Eat was pretty poor IMO. QF only offered one additional option beyond what was available on the flight, which meant the main benefit was guaranteeing your meal choice. However, the one time I used it as a non-status QFF member, the cabin crew didn't seem to have gotten the order anyway.

I get the rationale that it's good knowing what to expect on the flight, and potentially preventing wastage - but the way SQ do it is far superior and a more compelling proposition to use.

See- for me it’s way more than a “nice to know what to expect”: I can’t eat seafood and fish is also rather risky. Especially on many carriers from Asia, that’s a pretty difficult proposition. So, on JAL being able to at least pre-order the boring steak (that’s all they offer “Western” which is always steak or a super-dooper amazing looking “Japanese” choice which is mainly seafood with fish so not an option at all for someone like me).

And speaking of SQ, they are one of the main offenders for slapping some dried fish even on beef dishes and only offer one choice of starter which is, you guessed it, in 50% of cases prawns or fish. But again- at least there is the guarantee to get a main that one can eat.

4.15pm has always been a snack service - got to be after 5pm for dinner.

Im not a proponent of pre-ordering for domestic as I rarely eat on it nor do many other pax on the time of day flights I take

And therefore you could chose “Skip meal” or “I’ll eat in the lounge” …. how does offering pre-order impact your preference to not eat one iota?

Possibly, but AirAsia can do it. Hell even AA can manage it…

I had a full/regular meal on a 3:45pm flight couple of months back - possibly a route specific thing (either CBR-HBA or vv). But not the norm.

Because I don’t know in advance for a one or two hour flight. Catering on such short services shouldn’t really be a big focus IMHO

We are venturing off course so will refrain from any further comment otherwise it’ll turn into the endless data points and opinions in the priority boarding thread.

It has always varied over the years and for some periods had been adjusted for daylight saving.

The reality is, I was not expecting much and so it turned out

What did surprise me were the options available on a MEL-AKL evening flight the next day ... Pork noodle "stir-fry" or soup or pulse salad.

I would have been happier with the toastie!

Was just on 595 OOL-SYD 1150a-220p.
.CSM apologised as for some reason btmrekky options were loaded - bacon and eggs or fritata and sausage. Ratger odd.

I would note there were two status or rev pax in J (inc me) in row 2. Rest appeared to be either upgrades or pass travellers. CSM asked us first, then circled back to R1 then to R3.

I just had a drink

On QF634 tonight between MEL and BNE. 9:20pm departure so wasn’t expecting anything too substantial. Options were a cheese plate, pumpkin soup or a pie. I went with the cheese plate which was perfectly adequate for the time.

First J flight on Qantas since moving largely back over from VA. No PDB which I knew wouldn’t be coming but still disappointing. Left the gate 10 mins early and will be early into Brisbane so there is not too much to complain about.
