QF SYD-HND B787 J Supper / Breakfast
OK, so food....

I went with the Japanese set menu. So start with the bento of appetisers. Traditionally this is a simple sampling of various seasonal ingredients to amuse the palate and get ready for the main meal. Nothing too elaborate, but delicious.

No description of these dishes from the menu, so I'm guessing all of these. From top left clockwise:
  • This just seemed like a coleslaw, except with julienned daikon and a lighter mayo dressing. A bit odd to include; if it were to stand on its own, I'd say more or slightly heavier dressing.
  • Black sesame salmon with wasabi cream. This is probably the best of the lot.
  • White cut chicken and edamame. This was perculiar - two very plain things presented together. There was a broth but not enough of it and the flavour was very subtle, and I know white cut chicken is meant to be quite subtle in taste with its broth, but this was too subtle. Doesn't help that the juiciness of the chicken was mostly lost before serving (not the crew's fault)
  • Pickles, mushroom and tamagoyaki (egg omelette). This came with broth (rather jellified) which was nice. This is the amount of broth that was needed in the white cut chicken.
  • Green tea soba noodles. Delicious enough.
Next, the main meal:

First, the renkon (lotus chips) are a waste of time: they came out rubbery, not crispy. No point including them: maybe boiled lotus root would have been a better idea.

The seared beef was delicious - nice soy/salt combined with citrus (maybe yuzu) flavour. Not rare in any way but still edible and enjoyable. What I find odd is offering something like this for this kind of Japanese meal. The way the beef fillet was sliced and presented makes sense for a Western meal with those kinds of sides, eaten with a knife and fork. For this Japanese meal, most things should be easily picked up (or apart) with chopsticks, eaten in one or two bites. A slice of this beef is more like four or five bites.

I realise if they cut the beef smaller to suit, it'd likely be drier than it already is (somewhat), and not likely enjoyable. I'm not a Japanese cuisine expert (let alone kaiseki), but this is still one of the more peculiar Japanese set menus I've experienced.

Then, the dessert:

This is meant to be wagashi, a small sweet, typically mochi based. Hence you get the skewer as you see here. This is a slice of cake - using a skewer to eat it is not appropriate. Thank goodness for the spoon.

If I didn't guess, I'd say this cake was inspired by the same flavours of the cake on offer from the standard menu.

Slept for a while, then breakfast:

The main course - avocado, roasted tomato and boiled egg on sourdough - tasted fine, but OMG that sourdough needs to be rethought out. Don't get me wrong, I love sourdough, but if not toasted then that crust becomes tough, particularly when it cools down. Bad enough my knife could barely slice the crust to break it.... it was tougher than a well done steak. Needless to say I ate the inside of the sourdough and left the crust behind. Aside from that, the avocado mixture was way salty. Maybe for others it's OK, or I'm not used to avocado being seasoned, but I felt this avo paste was very salty.

The sourdough crumpet is a winner.

For once a breakfast that looks visually appealing! Shame that the execution wasn't particularly good.

Personally I'd be more partial to soft poached eggs rather than boiled eggs. Granted, that'd be tough to pull off on an aircraft.

I don't know why they made that "guacamole" to put on the bread when some fanned, sliced fresh avocado would do just as well.

QF797 ASP-MEL today. Op-up Y -> J. Offered beef brisket or garlic prawns. Vegetarian option on request: mixed veg (not)sausage rolls with the obligatory sourdough. Wine the current standard white 2022 Longview SB. Service by CSM perhaps best described as “efficient”. Overall fair for current QF Dom J, & considering I’d overlooked requesting the vegetarian option prior to checkin, when still in Y.

Lunch QF529 today. Mrsdrron salmon salad and I chicken in a creamy garlic sauce.

Salad was very good and chicken moist, tender and tasty.

Salad looks great - would love to see more of this.

CBR-HBA 14:35 E-190 flight. OK/average food but excellent service.

No PDB or pre-meal service on this around 95 minute flight. Two food options: Angus beef pie or cheese plate. Cheese did look good (3 varieties) but I chose the pie.

It was as I said "OK". Very bland but there was plenty of beef chunks inside (my pics don't capture that well). Pastry was good and it was well-prepared. So passable, and I thought OK options for this time.

Nice WA Cab Sav with plenty of top-ups offered. Which leads to the service.

Firstly, helpful ground crew who were very nice, followed by Emily the team leader /CSM, who was outstanding on board. Full J cabin (9 seats). I'm in 2A. Before rolling out the trolley, Emily comes to me and asks what I'd like to eat (I am P1). She then goes to 3A then to 2E&F. Then with the trolley serves rows 1 to 3 in order (but skipping staff traveller in 1A). When serving 1E&F she notes there is only one of each option left. They take one each.

When Emily comes to me she asks if I'm still happy with the pie, discretely showing me the cheese plate still in her cart. I think the flight was double-catered so she had 'spares' for the 1st leg. I know not everyone will agree but I appreciated these extra little touches as a P1.

What did it taste like?
I love a good curry and although the presentation is poor as usual it’s definitely something I would eat
Chicken was quite tender actually but the rest of it was rather dry. I found it pretty ok

Presentation will always be a challenge for brown goop.
I understand the difficulties and perhaps I expect too much for QF to at least try to put some effort in.
I’ve been doing a bit of research for next years trip on Vistara and the presentation of some of their dishes appear to be quite nice. Even some of the Y meals in aluminium packs are presented ok

I find curry is usually a good option in the air as it's difficult to overcook.

Agree- curry is usually a pretty good option in the air. I got a bit over the above Finnair one because it was offered on pretty much ALL flights out of Helsinki (the inbound being a rather bland vegetable pasta dish) but generally still a smart choice for a short-ish flight.

QF27, SYD-SCL. I asked what the Champagne was and the young bloke doing my side of the J cabin replied 'Doo-val Lee-roy' :) I had a glass anyway.

Our menu - 'late lunch' to start.

Barrington beef fillet. It was a bit overcooked for my liking, but still tender and very nice.

IMG_6430.JPG

Mango flan to finish; no pic but also very nice.

Breakfast - muesli, avocado toast and a soughdough crumpet. I wasn't expecting the portions to be so large!

IMG_6432.JPG

As someone noted in another thread, the toast under the avocado was impossible to cut though a combination of having a tough crust and the coughpy, blunt cutlery Qantas uses. Simply would not cut through with me using all the force I could muster without upsetting the table. I took the tomato off and picked up the toast slice and ate one that way.
